In the novel To KIll a Mockingbird by Harper Lee there are lots of characters. But there is one that stands out the most, Tom Robinson. Tom shows lots of courage from the time he is introduced and to the time he dies. He enters the Ewell’s house, he enters trial with great courage, and he tries to breakout of prison. These are reasons why he is so courageous. One way Tom shows courage is when he agrees to enter the Ewell’s house. Back when this novel took place (1930s) for a black person was dangerous without a white man’s word. Tom wanted to help Mayella out but instead Mayella started kissing him and Tom tried to run. “....I said Miss Mayella, let me outta, here an’ tried to run.”( Lee,194) This shows that Tom was trying to escape
A significant representation of courage is seen within Atticus. Within To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus speaks of the Tom Robinson trial as a trial all lawyers fear. He must face a court case that will have a profound personal effect upon himself and his family. Atticus summons the courage to recognize that there is a need for justice and that it is his duty to achieve this. Maycomb is a town tainted with stereotypes and racism. Atticus has the courage to overcome the fear of other peoples' dislike. He must face the fear of straining the lives of his two young children and family name. The courage Atticus embodies stems from his "satisfactory" character. Atticus is righteous and unable to turn his back on those who truly rely upon his ability to show empathy. He overcomes the heartless comments of those around them, to see the necessity of his involvement.
To kill of mockingbird In the kill a mockingbird the man harper lee thinks that atticus is brave because he simply defending tom robinson. Atticus says if you should not be defending him why are you doin it for number of reasons. I wanted to fight him because i could have represent the country in the legislature atticus said , I could even tell you or jem not to do something again. Atticus wanted to be brave because he want to defend him.
After hearing about how Atticus is going to defend Tom Robinson he had to deal with a lot of hate and people questioning why he is defending him. Atticus is courageous and doesn’t let the hate get to him. He goes up against the majority and fights for what he believes is right, and doesn’t listen to what anyone else think. In this time period blacks were discriminated against. Atticus took a courageous step to decide to defend tom Robinson.
Atticus shows Real Courage many times in TKAM especially in Tom Robinson's case. Atticus fought for tom robinson even though he knew he was fighting a losing battle. Atticus knows that he will be disliked for trying to help a black man. His own sister even tells him he is being a disgrace to the family.Atticus showed real courage by standing up for what he knew was right even though he got hated for it. He shows this when he says, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try and won." Atticus wants people to hear the truth about Tom, "That boy may go to the chair, but he's not going till the truth's told." (Page 146) Atticus even stands up for Tom after he is thrown in jail by protecting him from a
Moreover, every other character in the story can be said to have courage, especially Atticus. The book revolves around Atticus and how he has no fear to defend a black man. Atticus is a lawyer that always had justice and never accepts injustice. He defends a black man named “Tom Robinson” who is accused of rapping a white girl whose own father had infact raped. “I’m simply defending a negro his name’s Tom Robinson” “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee,100). These quotes show that Atticus is not afraid and is brave enough to hold his head up in town even if he defended Tom, an inferior in their society. It also shows how well educated and mature he is that he even connects his job to his kids and he always tries to be good to be the best in his kids’ eyes. He wanted his kids to get along with other people and for them to learn courage from them like Mrs. Dubose, for example.
Courage can be shown in many different ways. Some people have a hard time of showing it while others do not. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird courage is shown through the characters of Jem and Atticus. These two characters show their courage in many different ways.
First of all, Atticus shows courage in the Tom Robinson case because many people, including Bob Ewell, will torture him regardless. Atticus is an example of a father to Jem and Scout; he is brave enough to do anything
Our world suffers with many issues such as racism, sexism, hate and prejudice, and society needs people that are strong enough to take a stand. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is displayed in several different forms, especially through three courageous characters. Lee introduces the concept of honorable courage through Mrs. Dubose, a woman who demonstrates that real courage comes from within. Another brave character in the novel is Tom Robinson. He shows everyone how difficult it is for a black man to be both honest and kind no matter the situation. The most courageous person would be Atticus Finch. Atticus is an important character that fits into his own definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it in numerous ways throughout the novel, as he goes against most people’s beliefs in order to do what he believes is morally right. Through these three brave characters, Lee tries to reshape people's stereotypical view of courage.
Lee presented many examples of courage in To Kill A Mockingbird by illustrating all the scenes leading up to and after the Tom Robinson trial. The first example is that Atticus had the courage to defend Tom Robinson to his full extent despite the town’s disapproval. During the Great Depression, racism was still a major problem and everyone was always willing to trust a white man’s word over a black man’s. When Judge Taylor assigned the case to Atticus, no one expected him to actually try to prove that Tom Robinson was not guilty. Lee foreshadows the consequences of Atticus’s actions when Link Deas says, “You got everything to lose from this, Atticus.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, one of Atticus Finch’s most significant qualities, courage, impacts the story. Throughout the book, Harper Lee portrays courage as doing something out of your comfort zone, for the greater good or a good cause. The first example shows how Atticus’s quality of courage impacts the story. Atticus is sitting in front of the jail cell where Tom Robinson, the African-American man he is defending, is being kept. When Mr. Cunningham and the rest of his followers confront Atticus, he stays strong, keeps his ground and doesn’t let anything happen to Tom. The interaction starts with Mr. Cunningham approaching Atticus, “He in there, Mr. Finch? He is, and he’s asleep. Don’t wake him up. In obedience to my father. There followed what I later realized was a sickeningly comic aspect of an unfunny situation: the men talked in near-whispers. You know what we want. Get Aside from the door, Mr. Finch. You can turn around and go home, Walter. Heck Tate’s around somewhere.”(171-172) Atticus stops Mr. Cunningham and his men from harming Tom before his trial. It took courage to stand up to men who are usually cordial with him resulting in Tom not being killed and allowing the trial to continue. In the second example, it shows how Atticus’s actions reflect what how Harper Lee believes courage looks like in everybody. Atticus is brought to a tough decision in whether or whether not to defend Tom Robinson. When Scout asks him about the case and why he decided
One way Harper Lee develops the theme of fear is through Tom Robinson, he is the man Atticus is defending throughout the second half of To Kill a Mockingbird. While Tom is answering questions during the trial, he says, “I was runnin’ so fast I didn’t know what happened” (260). Tom Robinson starts to run because Bob Ewell finds him and Mayella and he starts yelling. Tom is worried what Bob is going to do at this point, so he runs away from the house. After all of that, Tom is sent to jail. Not too long after, Atticus breaks the news to Scout and Alexandra about Tom's death. He says, "They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over" (315). Tom, because of this, is shot and killed by guards. It is blatantly
Tom Robinson is another mockingbird figure. He was a genuinely caring person who is destroyed by his willingness to help Mayella Ewell. Just like a mockingbird, Robinson never hurt anyone. Yet, he was also persecuted by society for his kindness and his race. Tom Robinson was killed because of his kindness and the color of his skin; “ a harmless songbird that was shot down by a senseless hunter.” Lee uses the character of Tom as a mockingbird figure to express the innocence of the mockingbird and exhibit the narrow-mindedness and biased opinions of the towns folk.
In her book To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee depicts a gritty, Southern town, filled with racism, dishonesty, and criticism. Thomas Robinson, however, is one of a few who strive to live morally. Despite the persecution he faces because of his race, Tom still forgives and shows kindness to those around him. In a town where criticism and dishonesty thrive, Robinson has nothing to hide. Even though others treat him like rubbish and try to make his life miserable, Tom shows generosity to everyone who might need a helping hand.
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, courage can be found in every chapter and on almost every page of this book. Virtually every character in this book posses courageous qualities. In this novel, the Finches' are just a few of the people who endure harsh blows over about a three year period. However, each and every one of them step up to the plate with courage ready to strike. Atticus especially shows courage when he agrees to defend Tom Robinson. Atticus did not have to take this case, and everything that accompanies it. However, Atticus wanted to prove that being prejudice and racist is undoubtfully wrong. To try and convey this message was a difficult take to preform, but Atticus wanted the people of Maycomb to understand why he felt this way. Another charater who clearly shows courage is Boo Radley. Boo Radley was the person who killed Bob Ewell. Boo Radley did this because Bob Ewell was trying to kill Jem and Scout. Boo Radley, beyond a shadow of doubt, walked into that situation
"I wanted to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun." What kinds of heroism and courage are shown in To Kill a Mockingbird? Discuss.
