The nature versus nurture debate is said to be one of the oldest, longstanding debates within psychology. This debate really sparks the interests of researching whether it is soley by nature (our genes or hereditary factors) or by nurture (our enivornment, relationships, teachings) that we become who we are or what influences us most.
Nature depends more on science, as it’s the belief that we inherit who we are and our genes become our biological make up. Philosophers such as Descartes, Galton and Plato advocated that who we are is congenital and that it occurs naturally regardless of environmental influences (Gluck, Mercado and Myers 2008). To agree with these nativists means that no matter what we experience or what we are taught in life, we will inherit all traits from our genetics. So in theory these philosphers would believe that a man from a family whos genes may carry mental challenges or decreased life expectancy, he to will suffer the same defiencies.

Philosphers like Aristotle, Locke and Watson believed in humans being born knowing nothing (blank slates), who received all knowledge from the experiences of life (Gluck, Mercado and Myers 2008). Its John Watson, who customarily believed that people could be coached to do or become anything, regardless of their genetic background because he focused on behaviorism (theory of the impact the environment has on behavior). These philosphers would believe that a person exposed to a succesful environment would to be
The nature versus nurture debate is about the relative importance of an individual's innate qualities.
Nature or Nurture. Nature may be all of the genes and hereditary factors with which influence them to become who they are such as physical appearances and personality characteristics. Nurturing impacts people’s lives as well as how they are raised and all the environmental factors. In combination, these qualities can be the true identity of oneself. Many people may argue that nurture appears to a play huge factor in the two, but others may think otherwise. Not having both as a characteristic can have a negative effect on a person physically and mentally. The debate of nature versus nurture appears to be the oldest argument known to man, and it still remains to be unanswered. In the old-age argument nature versus nurture, nature may play a huge role in determining a person’s true identity.
The nature-nurture debate has been around for decades. It is one of the oldest and most popular topics in the history of psychology asking what makes people who they become and how they behave and develop the way they do. What makes the debate more interesting is that now scientists are asking if personality traits and even sexual orientation can be determined by what is in already there from conception. Bodies are built up of chromosomes which contain genetic information. Many of these are inherited from parents and relatives. The nature side of the debate states the way people are is predominantly from inherited genetics and other biological factors not so much the environmental factors. The genes humans have in their bodies play a huge role to many aspects of who they are and who they become. For example, hair colour, eye colour and height are all predetermined by genes. Unchangeable. This is natures way. The argument stands to decide whether most attributes do stem from nature, genes, or if they can be affected by the environment and the way people are nurtured as they have grown. The nurture side of the argument believes although humans do have the genes and traits with which they are born, most personality traits are being made up of environmental factors. For example, being loved and cared for as children, if parents or carers were positive role models and if those people were taught in ways which provided them with discipline and respect for others. Where nature
Nature Vs Nurture is often the huge debate in psychology when it comes to determining and understanding individual’s characteristics traits. Nature is hereditary to our behavior while nurture is based on our environmental influences. Although most argue whether or not nature or nurture defines our characteristics, I believe both have an impact on we are.
A person’s nature, or genetics, determines aspects of the psychology of a person before they’ve been born. There are many example of how genetics determine characteristics of a person, regardless of the environment, also known as
Nurture vs Nature Reading the memoir Identical Strangers by Elyse Schein, it is easily comprehensible that the debate of nurture vs nature has been around for decades. Nurture is the way a person grew up or was raised, while nature refers to the biological factors in a human being. To test this subject, scientists went as far as experimenting on humans. Even though both nature and nurture play a big role in shaping human development, it is the difference between our genetics and environment that determines our behavior, personality, and overall well being of a person. Nurture plays a huge role in the development of humans.
The nature versus nurture debate is one of the oldest issues in psychology. The debate centers on the relative contributions of genetic inheritance and environmental factors to human development.
Nature versus nurture has always been a big topic for discussion between scientists. To take a look at this further I took a look at a couple articles: “A Thing or Two About Twins", “Nature vs Nurture in Psychology" and the book “As Nature Made Him: the Girl Who Was Raised as a Girl” by John Colapinto. The case generated is that nature is the reason that humans are the way we are. Nature meaning genetics and heredity, while nurture is focused more on the environment. This case is significant for a study because it helps us understand how we as humans grow and develop into the individuals that we are. In the book David Remier, also known as Brenda was the test subject of the nature versus nurture debate with psychologist John Money conducting
Nature versus Nurture Controversy has long lasted on whether nature or nurture has its greater impact on the human development. Many psychologists and other undertakings have had their theories, sharing their own anecdotes on why nature has its impact moreover nurture, and vice versa. Foremost, with the nature aspect of the psychology argument; it is stated that nature may be a greater influence due to biological factors such as: vulnerability to diseases. Life expectancy due to this genetic inheritance can be effect to various extents, and an addition to this vulnerability is the development of the mind and body itself.
Nurture-only view how people are all the same at birth, and we are the product of our experiences. “Nature through nurture the environment- the womb or the world outside, it interacts continuously with biology to shape who we are and what we do” (Scully, 2016). The two dissimilar arguments of nature and nurture of human intelligence is a person’s intelligence is determined by genetics and a person’s intelligence is determined by the environment in, which a person is raised.
One of the oldest debates in the history of Psychology is about Nature versus Nurture. Today, we know that both play a significant role in human’s life. Some people believe that it is genes which affects our way of life and some people believes that it is none other but our environment that greatly influences our lifestyle and some believe that both has tremendous impact on one’s way of life. Indeed in certain cases both our nature (our genes) and our environment roughly play an equal role in human life.
Throughout history, our society’s socialization, or lifelong social experiences, has been debated upon quite vigorously. It is quite evident that we all obtain certain characteristics and abilities through heredity factors, but many still argue that this is not the only explanation for how our lives are determined. The argument of nature versus nurture is still being discussed by many, although both have been seen to have an impact on our life experiences.
Through history, the idea of nature vs. nurture has been a hotly debated issue. Nature, or genetics is often believed to be the most important aspect of a persons’ upbringing, as nature is something intrinsic to any one person. However, many debate that nurture, or the care and encouragement of any human life, trumps nature. The earliest evidence and rebuttals of these theories have been honed and developed over time by specific psychologists and educational theorists – all who hoped to prove their own ideas as fact at one time in history.
The nature vs nurture debate is one of the most enduring in the field of psychology. How far are human behaviors, ideas, and feelings, INNATE and how far are they all LEARNED?These issues are at the
Nature and Nurture both create the various personalities and physical appearances unique to everyone. However, with the progression of technology and medical understanding, a century long debate was born in which the question was asked, “does Nature or Nurture create who we are?” The argument presented by the side that argues nature is what creates who we are is that all a person’s characteristics are determined by their genes. On the other hand, the argument presented by the side that argues nurture is what creates who we are is that all a person’s characteristics are determined by their environmental interactions. This paper examines the correlation between mental health and the nature vs nurture debate. Through secondary research, it was
