Why Do People Judge? No one can deny that most people are quick to judge; whether it be how someone looks or how they act, there is always something to say about someone. When it all comes down, we are all on Earth. Everyone one of us are human, but why is that we allow each other to become separated due to differences in status and looks? In a world where violence is caused due to differences, we are forced to ask ourselves this question often. Looking into it, we can see the true judgement of people are due to how they look, how they dress, and how they speak. Another reason people may judge is simply because they don’t understand. Another reason to it is because people are just simply raised into believing opinions that are told around them. Opinions have the power to control people more than facts. With the look of someone, people are able to come up with assumptions of their character without speaking a word to them. People’s opinions allow them to hate others with no reason to it. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, we are given the examples of how these unreasonable opinions can lead to a world of hurt. The first example includes Jem and Scout’s friend Dill. Here everyone sees a little boy who goes back and forth between homes. Although he is just a child and can not be blamed for his situation, he is still talked …show more content…
This leads most readers to believe that Boo is a maniac in the beginning. No one at Maycomb personally knew him due to his lack of going outside; everything we learned about book in the beginning of the text was made up. Boo did not go outside let alone go to church so this was very unusual in Maycomb so as a result he was made to be a weirdo. Someone else who was judged is Atticus. Wasn't the most ridiculed but he was very different from others in Maycomb. He was mostly put down for defending Tom Robinson. The text states, “ I guess it ain’t your fault if Uncle
I believe what drives our judgement is the way people think of others. Today in this world, people are close minded and not open to new ideas. Society’s think that people who grew up from the bad side of town, they will get nowhere in life. We judge people for the way they look, what they wear, where they 're from, where they live, etc. We judge out of our own fears and insecurities. We must treat people the way the want to be treated, not by how you think they should be treated. When we judge someone, do we really know what goes on in their life. Also, still discriminate others to this day, such as, we still judge people based on their race. We have to treat people with equal rights no matter what race or ethnicity they are. We have qualities
At some point everyone has judged someone or has been judged , and this leads to stereotypes and prejudice. In to “Kill a Mockingbird” Harper Lee displays how judging a man by his color leads to unfortunate events. Through symbolism , stereotypes, colorism , Harper lee shows that everyone eventually judges even if they don’t see it as judging .
In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme is don’t judge someone according to their race. Scout learns that you can be prejudice about race. Scout said, “if there is just one kind of folk, why can’t they get along.” This proves my theme because if you don’t judge someone then there can only be one kind of person and we will all get along. If there is only one kind of person then why can’t everyone get along? Scout finds out that everyone makes mistakes. Judge Taylor said “there is not a person in this courtroom that hasn’t told a lie. Everyone messes up sometime in their life so Judge Taylor is saying everyone is equal. Everyone is equal. “There is one way in this country in which all men are created equal.” This quote supports my theme
In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, characters are used to demonstrate the misjudgement by others in society. Arthur “Boo” Radley is thought of in a very dimensional and untrue way by the children. Dolphus Raymond makes unnoticed compromises in order to live in the community which he does not fit in. Tom Robinson is a kind and humble African American, who is misjudged by society due to the colour of his skin. Lee uses characterisation to show readers how society judges others.
Have you ever thought about how people judge others without motives or reasons? Well this quite common in today’s world. We judge people by
In a perfect world, everyone WOULD be judged based on the content of their character. But we do not live in a perfect world and humans have always pre-judged others based on physical and cultural differences. These are the first things we notice about a stranger, and first impressions are hard to forget. Racism and prejudice have caused us to make dire mistakes in the past, but we have learned from these mistakes and have bettered our society. However, society today is filled with stereotypes and prejudices about people of certain races. It
His dad unreasonably punished him by locking him in the house for a long time. Boo became a recluse and did not leave his house for 25 years. He was viewed as an outcast and existed almost as a legend in the community. He, along with his entire family, was gossiped about by all the societal groups of Maycomb. Early in the book Jem is describing Boo in a way that the town has rumored to be the truth, “Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained”(13). Towards the end of the story, Bob Ewell, who is Mayella’s father, attempts to kill Jem and Scout while they are coming home from the Halloween pageant. Atticus, Jem & Scout’s dad, had made Bob look bad at the trial. As a result, Bob was out for revenge. Boo unexpectedly comes to the aid of the children by wrestling Bob away from them. Bob ends up dying from a stab of the kitchen knife which he was going to use on the kids. Ultimately, Boo saved the children's lives and, for the first time, Scout sees that the truth about Boo is not the same as the town's views. She still keeps the idea that there is good in everyone. ”Neighbors bring food with death and flowers with sickness and little things in between. Boo was our neighbor. He gave us.…..our lives.”(278) Boo symbolized the innocent Mockingbird in this novel because he was really a good person who was judged by society to be evil. In the end, the truth of his innocence overcame the evil views of the
Never judge someone without knowing the whole story. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about two young kids named Jem and Scout Finch growing up in the south in the 1930’s during the great depression and segregation. Through Jem and Scouts experiences, the author shows that before you judge someone, you should take the time to walk in their shoes and understand them.
No matter how open-minded a person may claim to be, everyone makes presumptions on first impressions or rumors. Despite seeing someone for only a split second, people make assumptions about others’ attitude, personality, and character! Usually, people tend to notice things that they feel are grounds to pass judgment upon. The quote “ You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it” by Harper Lee is a quote that truly signifies how people should perceive others. Rather than judging someone, people should place themselves in their shoes and try to understand their way of thinking
People in society are judging people for their looks. If someone judge them for their looks the
In Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, one of the most prominent themes used in the novel is the action of intolerance and the affect it has on all people. The theme of intolerance is fully explored in the case of Tom Robinson and the underlying racism shown in the treatment of him. Intolerance is met by all three main characters, Scout, Atticus and Jem but is experience by many of the other supporting characters. There was no one kind of intolerant person; they all came from different background, which is testimony to the point of the book ‘You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of views.’ This quote shows that you have no idea why a person does what they do until you experience things from their
Our nature as humans is to judge others. We are programmed to judge everything for the benefit of ourselves. Think about it for a second. What do you do when you meet new people? You judge them from the way
If judgement wasn’t apparent, we wouldn’t know what was hotter or colder, thicker or thinner, brighter or darker. Therefore, judgement is the nature of human existence itself. Even judgement of better or worse is an act of life. Judging someone by their external appearance is similar to how every decision is made which affects human beings in their everyday life. It’s a natural human instinct to judge someone by their external appearance.
When was the last time you judged someone? Today? Probably! As humans we are built with the capability to judge others to an inch of their life. But, we judge them based on our opinions and beliefs, not on the truth. We don 't know what others are thinking. We don 't know what makes them do what they do or what their intentions really are. So why do we judge?
The pressure of being ‘’perfect’’ is everywhere. You have to have the perfect body, the best grades and be one of the most popular kids at school. There are so many different ways to judge others. We jump to conclusions without knowing the facts; we judge based on how someone chooses to dress, what they say and how they act. Even the culture or religion is a part of how we choose to see someone. There is a quote saying ‘’ don’t judge a book by its cover.’’ And I think that the same goes for people. You should not judge someone based on their outlook, before you have gotten to know the
