As humans are in the early part of their life, they enjoy hearing and seeing only what they choose to. The idea of selective understanding relates to the quote from Harper Lee, “People generally see what they look for and hear what they listen for”. Harper Lee was the author of the very successful novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. The novel written by Lee is arguably one of the most influential books ever written, and can teach many lessons to young children and adults. The quote stated by Lee gives the idea that when a certain person does not want to hear what another person says, they only listen to a certain part from the other’s statement that pleases them.
This quote can be relatable for children and immature adults, because they only select compliments to hear, and filter out the discipline. For example, if a child is getting in trouble for doing something they weren’t supposed to, they will only pay attention to the good things that their parent has to say and pays no attention to the discipline the parent is trying to give. These actions from children can be difficult and stressful for

The quote comes from the fraction of the novel when Tom Robinson is being accused of rape. Judge Taylor explains to the jury and citizens viewing the trial that he cannot control what the people listen and see from the trial, because they only see and hear what they select to. Because of the racist backgrounds from the characters in the story, most of the people that watched the trial took away the idea that Tom Robinson was obviously guilty because he was African American. This was normal for people in the past to have discrimination from the African Americans, because they did not enjoy their presence. This shows how selective hearing and listening can affect the outcome of a person’s future from the jury declaring that Tom Robinson was guilty, even though there was plain evidence that he was
Power, it is something that everyone wants, it classifies us. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is about a powerless black man, Tom Robinson, accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Because of Mayella’s class and gender she is powerless, but her race makes her have a little more power.
What exactly is power? Is it being able to control someone or simply being able to have everything under control. In To Kill A Mockingbird we will see different perspectives on things and on situations. For example, would you believe a colored man or a white woman. Is Mayella powerless because of her class and gender or is she powerful because of her race?
I. “But I want to play with Walter, Aunty, why can’t I?” Scout begged. Aunt Alexandra stared coldly into her niece’s pleading eyes and replied, “Because-he-is-trash, that’s why you can’t play with him. I’ll not have you around him, picking up his habits and learning Lord-knows-what.”
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the characterization of Aunt Alexandra helps to reveal the theme of how reputation contradicts identity the theme is presented throughout the plotline of To Kill a Mockingbird. The way Aunt Alexandra shows this theme vocally is when she expresses her opinion to others of how family reputation should be followed by each family member. An example of this is when Scout is talking to her cousin Francis after they have eaten at the Finch's landing. As they were talking Francis brought up the subject of her dad and his case. After hearing what Francis says she gets mad at him and he replies that was what their Aunt Alexandra had said. Scout's cousin Francis says, "Grandma say it's bad enough he lets you all
“People don’t want to hear the truth because they don't want their illusions destroyed,” a quote by Friedrich Nietzsche. This is very true in the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. People like to believe what are rumors rather than the real truth because it is more interesting. This book is told through the eyes of Scout Finch, and her life journey and how it all lead to her brother’s, Jem, broken arm. Her father, Atticus Finch, is an attorney who hopelessly strives to prove his client, Tom Robinson, a black man, is not guilty of rape.
¨Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.¨ -Tom Paine. Tom Paine changed the world by influencing common sense. The book ¨To Kill A Mockingbird¨,US history, and my life all connect because there are moments when we want freedom but can not get it. My quote from Tom Paine relates to a character named Tom Robinson from the book ¨To Kill A Mockingbird¨ by Harper Lee.
To Kill a Mockingbird Many people were disturbed to see a video where a canadian women said racial comments which were driven on her emotions, theses emotions are also seen in To Kill a Mockingbird. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows that prejudice is based on emotions rather than reasoning. There are many examples such as the mob that wants to hurt Tom Robinson and the hatred that Lula has against Scout and Jem. As well of attempted murder on the children by Mr. Ewell. Theses are some of the cases where emotions took over rather than proper reasoning.
A Message Every book has a main theme, but in To Kill a Mockingbird it has various themes to express. In Harper Lee’s epic book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is the father of two young children Scout and Jem Finch. Atticus is the best lawyer in all of Macomb County. He was assigned a case, a case almost impossible to win just because of the person’s color.
Despite the case of Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird being written and published in the late 1950s, there are still many important and prevalent life lessons that can be applied to our own lives that are revealed in the novel. The lesson of perception and sympathizing with other people to gain a better understanding of your own world is revealed, which could be found through reading what Scout had to say near the end of the book, when standing on the Radley porch. Scout takes a moment to view the world of Maycomb in the same light as Boo Radley, which is substantial even if it’s just for a couple of moments. She is able to view Maycomb for what it is as well as the events that have transpired over the course of the novel through the eyes
Novels tend to have an anomaly that ends to show its protagonist as nothing but a narrator. To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee in 1960. To Kill a Mockingbird’s true protagonist isn’t the narrator, Scout, but is her brother, Jem, since the book itself is a narration and perspective on the backstory to how Jem broke his arm, when he broke it, and how Jem matured over the years. Lee’s novel starts with Jem with a broken arm and ends in the same fashion, with Jem being present in almost everywhere, providing evidence to Jem being the true protagonist. Thus, it is evident that the book starts and ends with Jem’s broken arm, showing that the book is an explanation to why Jem got a broken arm.
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe once said, “courage is the commitment to begin without any guarantee of success.” This quote means that no ordinary person can be known to be courageous. It takes someone who will stand by what they say no matter what the circumstances are and how they may be looked at in society. A courageous person doesn't have to always succeed, but put in the effort to try and prove their point in any way possible. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Lee mentions many courageous people whose actions speak louder than their words.
In Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, she puts the realization into place that every individual has a unique sense. The Mockingbird title advocates the pure innocence within a being. So in saying this, it’s morally wrong to have killed an innocent mockingbird that brings nothing but positivity to this earth. Three mockingbirds that came into my view from this novel are Scout Finch, Boo Radley, and Atticus Finch. These people represent the mockingbird the best in my opinion, I say this because they have the childlike innocence that you can’t quite replicate for another.
Attention Grabber: In 2011, 8% of American believe that racism isn’t an issue in the United States. Today, about three percent of Americans believe that racism is not an issue in the United States. And, in 2011, 16% thought that it was a ‘small problem,’ and 58% of Americans today state that racism is a ‘big problem’ (went up 10 percent since 1995). This could be due to the United States’ previous president, Barack Obama, being elected into office in 2008.
Society is unfair. Society today is a messy place where it empowers one kind of human being over another, whites versus blacks. Atticus from How to Kill a Mockingbird said, "Scout," said Atticus, "nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don't mean anything—like snot-nose. It's hard to explain—ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves. It's slipped into usage with some people like ourselves, when they want a common, ugly term to label somebody.
Who would destroy something that contained a heart filled only with good? The answer to that can be found in the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee in an unjust time of unequal opportunity. The story follows the retelling of an 8-year-old girl named Jean Louis and those around her moral growth. She lives in Maycomb Alabama during the Great Depression. She has many chapters of growth including changing from afraid of a person to wanting to meet them, seeing people put on masks in order to avoid judgment, and watching an innocent man go to jail. Scout learns that to Kill a mockingbird is a sin for they have done no wrong, that people make that most meaningful mockingbirds, and the true significance of them because of the moral growth they bring about in people.
