Many classic novels have been banned over the years, including of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Most banned books were demanded to be banned by parents, showing that the educators approved the reading material and thought it was informative, but the parents wanted to shelter their children from certain aspects of the world. Most banned books are banned due to the demands of parents. Most of these parents are the “parents of children who have not experienced shattering hardships first-hand”, and they need to raise “their awareness of the adversities faced by their peers”. These parents wanted to shelter their children from certain aspects of the world, but their children would or already have encountered these aspects anyways.

Books are usually banned because someone has the opinion that the material in the book is bad or inappropriate. The reason to ban books because they make “people feel ‘uncomfortable’” is not a good enough reason to “not to talk about a subject that isn't talked about enough”. The classic To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee was banned in Biloxi, Mississippi, which was being read in an eighth-grade class to “teach adolescents that caring for others should not be dependent on race or education”.
