The Sinking of the Greatest
My paper is about the Titanic and why it is an important event in history. The Titanic was an awfully big ship. It was about 883 feet long, and weighed 52,310 tons which is huge, the largest ship ever actually. It was designed by Thomas Andrews, but built by Harland and Wolff, which was a ship building company. It was built in Belfast, United Kingdom. They started building the ship on March 31, 1909 and launched the final ship project on May 31, 1911. Which I honestly think they finished it really fast. The Titanic when full could carry 2,435 passengers, and a crew of approximately 900. Which brought her capacity to more than 3,300 plus people. With all those 3,300 plus

It looked all fancy, with all the large stair cases and beautiful one of a kind designs. Well at least the first class and second class men part of the ship was pretty. But for the third class men, the rooms were just kind of normal, and honestly some of them look very crowded. With two sets of bunk beds and one random toilet in some rooms. For the first class men, the tickets for the voyage were about $2,500, in today’s money that would be approximately $57,000. The third class men tickets were $40 dollars (Explaining why their rooms were so tiny and ugly.) which that in today’s money would be about $900. The sinking of the Titanic occurred on the night of April 14th through the morning of April 15th 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean. The ship hit an iceberg at about 11:40 pm on April 14th. The Titanic failed to divert its course from an iceberg and ruptured at least five of hull compartment. These compartment filled with water and pulled down the bow of the ship. There was literally so much water that the ship was vertical in the air. Then about 2 hours later, the Titanic broke in half at about 2:20 am on April 15th, the stern and bow sank to the ocean …show more content…
They probably just did it for all the talk and all the publicity. In the end publicity is for sure what they got, more than expected. They spent a total of $7,500,000 ($174 million in today’s money) to build the ship that is now at the bottom of the ocean, along with tons of dead souls. Because of careless mistakes from dumb people. There were too many mistakes made that caused the disaster. However the Titanic could have been saved had just a few of these events not happened. If people would listen to warnings and suggestions, than yes this tragedy could have been avoided. If the caption had been listening to the six warnings that he was given then the ship have been able to steer away from the iceberg. It doesn’t take much effort to steer the ship away from the iceberg. Someone actually took the time to contact the ship SIX TIMES, the least you could do is move the ship a little bit to get away from the iceberg. Even if they had slowed down because they were going too fast, they would have seen the iceberg sooner, and would have been able to think about what to do. That would have given them more time to avoid
With advancing technology Dr. Ballard was able to recreate and gather images of what the ship looked like before it sunk.
On April 14, 1912 what was known as one of the safest ships, the titanic, sank.
The way that light passed through that air could have caused distortion to the look of objects by the horizon. This causing the ice berg kept from being seen until it was thirty seconds away and alter the Titanic’s appearance to a nearby ship, which explains its lack of help when the ship set of distress calls. Maltin also points out other little things that lead to the sinking of the Titanic and the absence of enough life boats. One of the biggest errors made by the crew members was when the operator was listening to telegraphs sent in, looking out for any about the current ice situation ahead of time, he has accidentally skipped right over the one. The ship had just gotten to a place where they could receive telegraphs from the United States, the operator was overwhelmed with them. The message warning the titanic about the iceberg had been written in an informal manner, he thought it be nothing important before listening to it all. As the titanic began to sink only around 700 people were able to fit on the amount of life boats that the Titanic was stocked with. Critics shame the ship a lot for not having enough life boats for everyone aboard, but because the Board of Trade rewarded ships who didn’t need as many life boats and the ship was fully believed to be unsinkable, the designer didn’t see a reason to why they would need that many life
The sinking of the luxurious Titanic was a traffic disaster that could have been avoided. Dr. Paul J Quinn stated in his book Dusk to Dawn " The Titanic had actually been designed to carry forty-eight lifeboats but was rejected because it made the deck look cluttered"(11). The sinking could have been avoided if the Titanic crew had not over estimated its strength, and had listened carefully to the warnings of numerous other ships, and if the crew managed the rescue efforts into the lifeboats correctly.
The Titanic’s maiden voyage was disastrous because the beautiful ship sank and many people died. One of the largest flaws of the Titanic’s design is that it was too big and not nimble enough to avoid the iceberg. In addition to the nimbility of the ship, some of the rivets were improperly manufactured and contained a lot of slag in the steel, which makes it more fracture prone.
The British luxury passenger ship, The Titanic, set sail on April 10, 1912, en route to New York City from Southampton (Lord ch 1). During her maiden voyage, midnight of April 15, 1912, she began to sink (ch 1). The Titanic had a collision with an iceberg that was around 100 feet tall (“Titanic: 40 Fascinating Facts” 3). Regardless to how greatly manufactured the Titanic was, and with beliefs that she was unsinkable, the miscalculation of human error proves that every possible outcome cannot be prevented, disasters can still occur regardless of careful planning.
The Titanic, a British luxury liner that claimed to be unsinkable, sank after colliding with an iceberg on April, 14 1912. The name titanic was acquired from greek mythology, it means gigantic. The titanic was fabricated in belfast ireland, in the united kingdom.
During the years of 1909 to 1912 the Titanic was being constructed and was launched in Belfast, United Kingdom. “I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that.” Captain Edward Smith. The Titanic impacted American history through manufacturing ships stronger and the International Ice Patrol.
The Titanic is one of the most famous ships known around the world as the once "unsinkable ship". April 15, 1912 the Titanic sank into the Atlantic Ocean on it's one and only voyage. The 825 ton ship can be found 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland 12,600 feet below the Atlantic.
On the 12th day of April 1912 the R.M.S Titanic struck an iceberg to causing it to
The Titanic was the biggest ship then but it went down faster than anyone would have expected. One iceberg took this humongous ship down on April 15, 1912. This shipwreck is known as one of the worst things to happen in history. The Titanic held many people, but could not save as many that were on the ship.
The “unsinkable” Titanic took an unexpected turn on its voyage and left few survivors to tell about it. The Titanic was said to be very high-quality, but the crew proved themselves wrong soon after the voyage set off. One passenger, Mr. Joseph Bruce Ismay, was on the ship when the tragedy took place. Did he survive? With much carelessness, the crew of the Titanic ignored all warning messages due to confidence in the ship; consequently, they were not so confident when they found themselves rushing to passengers’ rescue.
On April 14th, 1912 at around 11:40pm the Titanic smashed into the iceberg. The iceberg stuck the starboard side of the ship causing the plates of the hull to buckle. When the plates buckled it opened a seam from the iron plates pulling away from the seams causing the watertight compartments to start flooding. The Titanic was designed to be made to be able to stay afloat with up to the first four watertight compartments flooded (Greeley 3). The collision caused at least
A very unexpected event was the sinking of the “indestructible” Titanic. As the story goes, the Titanic hit a giant iceberg and that was its reason for the sinking. This may be true; however, the Titanic’s operator ignored many warnings given different ships including the Californian and the Baltic. “Lightoller had talked with other officers about the proximity of ice; at least five wireless ice warnings had reached the ship; lookouts had been cautioned to be alert…” Along with the colossal iceberg appearing, the Titanic was also going at too great of a speed to be able to slow down enough by the time they had seen it ahead of them. The wreck commissioner in the British Board of Trade’s investigation said that the Titanic’s speed of twenty-two knots was “excessive under the
The ship set sail on April 10, 1912 from Southampton, England and on its way to New York. The total passengers were around 2,200 people, including a crew of around 900. The passengers were divided into certain classes depending on what kind of ticket they paid for, with first class being the most
