Is Fear Our Worst Enemy? Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. However in this case, Fear is the avoidance or put off of something because one is afraid. Considering modern day society’s oppression, fear is in fact our worst enemy, which is evident through our focuses on success rather than failure and by the inspirational experiences of failure. In order for they’re to be success in ones’ life, there must be backbreaking failures and barriers to overcome.
Through the Merrimack College Commencement speech by Professor Charlie Day, “You cannot succeed without the risk of failure, you cannot have

Dweck defines her understanding of a growth mindset as, “The growth mindset says all of these things can be developed. All – you, your partner, and the relationship – are capable of growth and change” (Maria Popova, BrainThinkings). Therefore, the weaker mindset would be known as fixed mindset, “In a fixed mindset, the ideal is stant, perfect, and perpetual compatability. Like it was meant to be. Like riding off into the sunset. Like they liked happily ever after” (Maria Popova, BrainThinkings).
Fear has been the barrier for goals and dreams leading to great possible success. Especially in athletics, many athletes experience failure and obstacles throughout their athletic career. Therefore, there are very few athletes that do not attempt or avoid the athletic fears. Whereas a student attempts to achieve the top of their academic rank, athletes will strive to be the best in the sport as well. Whether one is an athlete or student, one cannot succeed with just a strong “fixed” mindset of success. They must have more of a “growth” mindset to achieve. One must constantly seek challenge and difficulty in every step of their life. Avoidance is not the way to achieve success; in fact, you cannot achieve anything with avoidance. World-known NBA legend, Michael Jordan shares a very motivational statement through an interview, “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve almost
She started to do study with children to see how they would react with difficulty. What Carol found out was extremely surprising to her. She learned that some children loved a difficult challenge and wanted more of it. The children didn’t think they were even failing when they couldn’t figure the challenge out. They thought they were learning. Dweck states that her research has been going on for twenty years. Her research shown the view you create for yourself can affects the choices in your life. There are two different types of mindset, Dweck talked about. One of them, is fixed mindset and the other is growth mindset. These two different type of mindset can affect you in sports, relationship, school, and the workplace. The fixed mindset is you have importances to prove yourself, time after time. The other is a growth mindset is based on always improving your qualities. The growth mindset allows people to still grow during a hard time in their life. Fixed mindset with people fear
The Holocaust was the systematic and bureaucratic murder of six million Jews by the Nazi party and its collaborators. During the era of the Holocaust, German authorities targeted many groups of people because of their perceived "racial inferiority" including Gypsies, the disabled, and some of the Slavic peoples. Other groups were persecuted on political, ideological, and behavioral grounds. Several authors have written about the Holocaust, but one author that touched many people the most was Elie Wiesel. Through the use of several style devices, Wiesel creates an impressionistic style which reflects the nature of his experiences in the Nazi
Baseball changed over time when African Americans were able to join the game of baseball in the early 1840s when the game of baseball started. Only African American were able to play the game of baseball due to segregation. Most people did not even want African Americans to play baseball in the MLB they could have their own league but,not with whites because no blacks were allowed to communicate with them. Alexander Cartwright invented the game of baseball and the U.S Congress gave African Americans created their own team named the Cuban Giants, but it really did not succeed due to the lack of attendance at the game. Jackie Robinson was the first African
The five most important scenes of The Scarlet Letter were first, Hester holding baby Pearl being shamed on the scaffold right in the beginning. Second, when Chillingworth found out that Dimmesdale was the man who committed adultery with Hester. Third, when Hester and Dimmesdale were in the forest talking about fleeing and living with only each other and Pearl. Fourth, in which Dimmesdale finally reveals his sin to the public as he is on death’s bed. Finally, the last most important scene of the novel, is the “happy ending” when everything gets wrapped up.
In The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander is about a shocking statistic. That more African American men are in correctional facilities or on probation than were enslaved in the mid 1800s before the Civil war started. She offers her perspective on the mass incarceration of African American men in the US. Taking shots at all she holds responsible for the issues. She explores the social and systematic influence of racial stereotypes and policies that support incarceration of minorities. She explains that minorities are discriminated against legally for their whole lives. By being denied employment, housing, education, and public benefits. Unable to overcome said obstacles most will
Ever since the days of Mesopotamia from the agricultural revolution, war has been a constant and important part of human life. Over time though, humans have evolved and gotten stronger and smarter which lead to more competition. War from its beginning, has consistently stemmed from the innate sense of evolutionary survival and subsequent competition, thus securing it’s inevitable perpetuation.
There are many different topics in the world that split people’s opinions. Some stronger than others. These views and opinions are often swayed by one’s political views, and one of the biggest topics that sparks controversy are the rights of all people. Some of the bigger groups are Black Lives Matter and feminists. While these are very big and prominent, the one that sparks the most controversy is the LGBT community, and one of the biggest claims they make is that they don’t have the same rights of marriage as straight people. The LGBT community have protests and parades to try to spread the message that homosexuals should have the same rights of
How many opportunities do we lose because of fears, unreasonable wariness? Our frights sound distinctively, telling everyone something unique, unlike, special. However, its only action is to hide and paralyze our will. Fear is the natural reaction caused by the environment. Fears arise as a reaction to certain events. And the root of all of them is the conviction that we are not able to cope with life. But for any person, it is very important to be able to overcome fear, because otherwise he will not be able to achieve in his life any, even the smallest heights, not to mention achieving success or realizing ones dreams. Fear is a signal that says something needs to be changed for a harmonious and effective life. And only we decide: to deal with our fears, to live happily and to embody our intentions, or to be afraid of leverage, to forget about intentions and dreams, and to react, to spend our strength on how to hide fears deeply from us and others. The short stories “House Taken Over” by Julio Cortazar and “The Old Chief Mshlanga” by Doris Lessing have a mutual theme of fear, however each story’s character performs it uniquely.
There are two types of mindsets or ways of thinking, either a fixed or a growth. A fixed mindset is the belief that you have a set amount of knowledge or skill that cannot be added upon. The growth mindset believes that although there may be a difference in current knowledge levels they are only representative of where you are now and not where you will always be. Being in a fixed mindset can cause someone to be prone to reject criticism and avoid challenges even to the point that they just give up when an obstacle gets in the way. However the growth mindsets find inspiration in others success and learn from criticism given.
For thousands of centuries, poetry is an outlet for writers to communicate their innermost emotions and convictions. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of a poem is its ability to draw in the reader and hold that attention so that the reader cannot do anything else. Written in free verse, the poem “Beware: Do Not Read This Poem” by Ishmael Reed compares the habits of an eccentric woman to the hypnotizing powers of a poem. Various uses of structure, tone, and poetic devices help establish the main theme of isolation.
Have you ever wondered who’s behind the little voice in your head that tells you, “You can’t do this. You do not have what it takes to make a difference, so why even try?” His name is FEAR and he plays the role of antagonist in the story of your life. You must rid yourself of FEAR, as it robs you from being your best. It keeps you from seeing the best in others. Ultimately, FEAR hinders your ability to personally grow and develop because it creates an atmos-FEAR of in-FEAR-iority.
Fear has come to permeate the daily life of our generation. We have become very adept at putting on a brave face which is admirable but ill-advised. We refuse to open up or admit our fear, because we don’t want to appear weak to those around us. But every day, all of us go through the same fear. Some days are better than others of course but each and every day we have something that worries us. Something that we may work to hide, and may succeed in hiding from the world and even ourselves for a time. But it is there nonetheless. Each of us deals with stress, pain and fear that is hard for others to understand. We may not even understand it ourselves frankly.
Once fear is drawn up by the unknown, an individual will be forced through obstacles until fear is overcome. Obstacles are thrown in one’s path to get a reaction through
Dr. Dweck’s concern in “What Are Mindsets” is wanting to portray the differences among a fixed mindset and a growth mindset, as well as demonstrating how a fixed mindset will set people back from expanding their intelligence and achieve their goals.
