These changes have helped optimize the daylight hours and effectively shorten the winter season by about five weeks. However, for some Americans, this is not enough. They want the time change to be abolished altogether. Since 2015, lawmakers from Idaho, New Mexico, Alaska, and California have tried to introduce bills to remove DST believing it disrupts both businesses and individuals. However, none of the proposals have received the approval of the respective state legislators.
In addition to the inconvenience, the time change also appears to have a severe impact on the health and well-being of some residents. A 2012 study conducted by Christopher Barnes an associate professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, found a 10% increase
Daylight Savings Time was first initially proposed by, “Benjamin Franklin, in 1784.” Daylight Savings Time was used to “relief war effort,” in order to sustain sufficient supplies to last longer. However, DST was not established, considered and enforced in the United States of America until 1918. Later, in 1960 cities around the United States had an open choice to take part or not in DST. Soon after, numerous states and cities announced; no longer being part of the Daylight Savings Time anymore. Soon, this caused confusion with several schedules with transportation and entertainment. Finally, in 1966 “Congress established a beginning and an ending date” for Daylight Savings Time.
Despite the overwhelming evidence given by current research, many people refuse to change school start times because of the lack of noticeable impact some schools had or the impact it had on some people’s schedules. Pannoni cites a statement by the Iowa City Community School District which found that “the later start time . . . [did] not reduce the number of tardy students by any appreciable amount.” The principal of Ballard High School agreed by saying that he “would be surprised to see large improvements in either attendance or grade data compared with past years” (Pannoni). Many schools refused to change because of how the later start and dismissal times would affect extracurricular activities and students with jobs. This change would also interfere with bus schedules and childcare habits. However, these seem like small problems that can be overcome when the results are that “later school start times were associated with students sleeping longer at night, less tardiness, having higher test scores, being less depressed, using less caffeine and other drugs, . . . and experiencing fewer morning car crashes” (Fenwick).
Daylight Savings Time, or DST, has shown a vast increase in energy conservation. “America’s electricity usage is reduced by about one percent each day that Daylight Savings Time is in effect” (Longley). through the use of statistics, New York Times was able to publicize the amount of energy conserved due to Daylight Savings Time. Although 1% may seem like nothing, over the 9 month period DST lasts, it starts to add up. Without DST, electricity bills would be thorough the roof. Taxes would also start to rise which would cause chaos throughout the society.
Most American citizens native to mainland United States are accustomed to a familiar pattern of springing their clocks forward an hour in March and setting their clocks backward an hour in November. This pattern of lifestyle is regulated by the federal government and is widely adopted by many, for daylight savings poses a plethora of benefits for society. In order to maintain optimal efficiency as a nation, the federal government should continue to practice daylight savings time because obtaining an extra hour of sunlight has social, environmental, and economic advantages.
According to a New York times article written by Anahad O’Connor (Source E). Our body runs in a circadian rhythm which uses daylight to determine the time of day and how we are feeling. Every time daylight savings comes around this rhythm is thrown off. While these facts are still being studied and are still up for debate it is important to take these threatening hazards into consideration. O’Connor says, “Other studies have suggested links between time change and increases in heart attacks, suicides, and accidents, though scientists say more study is needed.” These studies can be shown as a very important reason on why DST is more than just a time difference. It is affecting our well being and this is proving that DST is having a negative effect. In an experiment conducted by Matthew Kotchen and Laura Grant (Source F) they provided statistics on energy consumption in the spring and fall. Energy consumption is not constant throughout DST which proves that it can not be used as a way to save
America was not always the successful country that it is today and some Americans were once not actually from the United States. Instead, the states stemmed off from different cultures around Europe, the land being split between many big contenders like Britain, Spain, and even France. The thirteen colonies were the start of the US and would eventually become rebellious enough to break away from the system that they had once lived under. The states undergone construction to build a new government and a new way of life for the generations that would come. After two hundred and thirty nine years of practicing and figuring out our way of life, America has both succeeded and dropped in many areas. The definition of America has certainly changed throughout the years, but one thing
Daylight Savings Time (DST), an annual period of altering standard time, has been in effect around the world for decades. It is a controversial system that some insist have benefits, but ultimately does not serve any major purpose to our society and creates problems for our citizens; therefore, it should no longer be used.
The central idea of idea that America has changed over time is developed in Was Hard Fight To Get Vote and The Roaring Twenties different ways. In Was Hard Fight To Get Vote it shows how America has changed by showing how women slowly gained rights over time. Consequently, in The Roaring Twenties it shows that America had a great 10 years then the worst years of American history. American has changed significantly throughout time. One way being, according to Was Hard Fight To Get Vote, was that women gained suffrage.
Daylight savings time is a great time of year. It was first put into action in the United States in 1918.I like many others love daylight savings time, here in America. For one thing there are many people who do not like daylight savings time I on the other hand like daylight savings time.
For starters, “opponents of DST cite other studies that disagree with these outcomes.” They have stated, with studies of their own, that while yes, there is a decrease in accidents, as well as energy consumption, it’s not enough of a decrease to support the use of DST. These studies show that the abrupt change in daylight hours, and with so many forgetting to change their clocks, is causing more inconveniences than
Daylight savings time is a very controversial topic. Many people want Daylight Savings Time to be stopped because of how beneficial it is to us Americans. It all started in Europe during World War 1 to save energy in the war. But now it doesn't save hardly any energy. Daylight savings time should be changed because of a few reasons one there are a few safety concerns, two there are health hazards and three not many people support it any more.
This period of time changed America. The depression and the war will never be forgotten. Americans were slammed with tragic of no jobs, no money, and no way to get by. Franklin D. Roosevelt spent the first 100 days in office creating programs to help the nation. The social security poster demonstrates that America acted responsible because it shows a post man’s hand handing a social security check to someone over 65. The capital, which represents the government, wanted to make sure the citizens were getting money they needed even when they could not work. There is no other way to be responsible as a nation than to take care of the people.
America is a land of freedom and bravery. During the time period that some of the works were written, The United States did not offer freedom. This country had slavery, poverty, and a social hierarchy that made many life choices for Americans. Slaves had to buy their freedom, men had to work for their possessions, and women had to raise their families with all the techniques they were taught from their mothers. There are many attributes to being an American, but race is not one of them. The theme in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is freedom, which is the idea for which America was founded.
There are many reasons that cause this big shift in the United State economy. One reason was the improvement in transportation. Since the country ran under one central government, they help create better roads and canals which help in the transportation. Another reason that enable this change was innovation or new technology. For example, the invention of railroad and creation of steam machines increase the effectiveness of transportation and decrease the time it takes to deliver goods (lecture). Another important invention at this time were the cotton engine. This engine increased the production of cotton of America significantly (Slavery, The Making of America). This started from organizing the workers and therefore caused the creation of
The Daylight-savings Time (DST) period in the United States begins each year on the 2nd Sunday in March, when clocks are set forward by 1 hour, then are turned back again to standard time on the 1st Sunday in November as DST ends. A century ago, when DST was introduced, more daylight was a good thing because it meant less use of artificial light, helping to save energy. Modern society uses more energy, no matter if the Sun is up or not. Today, the amount of energy saved from DST is negligible. When Indiana decided to introduce DST in 2006, a study found an increased energy use in the state. For this reason alone, most think DST is a waste of a worry and should be eliminated for its uselessness. Although DST may not seem to benefit anyone directly,
