Adventure is defined as the unknown, a challenge with a goal in mind, and discovering the world. The definition of adventure may vary from person to person depending on their likes, dislikes, or even experience. Adventure does not always mean you need to take risks putting your life on the line or being a “thrill junkie”. Many find adventure in not knowing what the road ahead will hold. The unknown can be fearful; not knowing the outcome whether good or bad can be a test that many will take to prove your strengths and weaknesses. As horror fiction author Howard Phillip Lovecraft wrote, “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown” (Lovecraft 1), we can relate to the
Adventure is a necessary element to a story in which it creates excitement and action during which time the characters may develop. In O Brother, Where Art Thou, Everett and his two buddies are in a labor facility working off their court sentence. They escape the unit in search of a treasure that Everett claims was buried. On their journey they meet many gods and nymphs portrayed as people, as compared to The Odyssey. In one circumstance, Delmar and Everett are eating out after receiving money from a crook were then asked to discuss business with a
Adventure is craved by both the young and old. In the book “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer the main character Chris McCandless seeks adventure by going out into the wild. McCandless left the safety of his apartment, donated all of his money to OXFAM, and ditched his beloved yellow Datsun to live in the wild. He was living on his own for over two years, but only survived the Alaskan wilderness for four months. Some may believe that McCandless was suicidal to go into the wild alone and with limited supplies, but it was really due to his literary influences and family problems.
The call to adventure is when the hero begins in the world as we know ,and the hero receives important information that leads to desire to head off into the unknown. In the Odyssey, Odysseus
So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. (56-57)”
Life is an adventure, life is a journey through a time that is only experienced once. Most people are too afraid to live life as an adventure or as a journey that would never be forgotten. In the incredible story Into the wild told by Jon Krakauer a young man named Chris McCandless leaves everything behind for one goal, to live life as an adventure. Chris did not want to live the way society wanted him live. Through his journey he meets many new people and ends up eating the wrong plant which takes is life. Chris wanted to show society that he could survive without the help of people and materialistic things, so he went into the wild for a brave and adventurous journey to fulfill his lifelong dream.
Courage is the reason we try new things. You would not have your favorite job or hobby if you didn’t try it for the first time at some point, and you can’t try it if you don’t have the courage to do so. Almost every day we do or try things completely alien to us, no matter how small. It is important to do this in order to stay entertained and happy. Eventually doing the exact same thing you did yesterday will get boring, there’s no arguing about it. Everybody needs to spot out of their comfort zone at least a little in order to stay engaged with the world around them. One example of this can be found in Jasper Jones when Charlie kisses Eliza. “Eliza Wishart has kissed me. Is kissing me. Right here, beneath
Dr. Marc Lamont Hill stated, “ If you want to wipe out an entire generation of people and engage in a 21st century genocide, all you have to do is keep doing what we are doing and deprive people of access to healthy food.” Bryon Hurt 's documentary Soul Food Junkies challenges and informs people 's way of thinking when it comes to soul food. Questioning if dishes such as fried chicken, buttery mac and cheese, smokey ribs and greens in pork fat are significant to the black culture or just a recipe for an early death. So, he used his father 's story, Jackie Hurt, about his ways of not giving up his artery-clogging classic soul food. At one point, Bryon Hurt wanted to be just like his father so he ate just like him. Especially on Sundays for the breakfast ritual which included grits, cheesy eggs, salt pork and bacon on toast. He felt that was a way to bond with his father. Jackie Hurt was not only consuming soul food dishes on a daily basis but he never exercised. This lead to serve weight gain, but he was not changing his eating habits even though his family did. He was later diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that took his life so young.
Beowulf set his ego aside and hurdled into the face of danger in order to defeat a greater evil and liberate the people of Heorot from the demonic grasp of Grendel. The crew aboard the Challenger brought America together and helped us insure the safety of future astronauts. Tom pushed his body to the edge to live the life he dreamed of. Risks are imperative in life. Even beginning life, they are our instinct. We learn to crawl despite the bruises on our knees. We learn to walk no matter how many falls we endure. As we become further aware of the world around us, somewhere along the way, we experience failure; at that point, many people attempt to eradicate most risks from their life. But where would we be without our sense of exploration, our willingness to try new things? In order to push one’s boundaries, move forward as a society, and give purpose to life people must be willing to take risks.
They say that everything comes with a price. Even one’s most visible dream has its unthinkable consequences. Thrown into foreign environments and are faced with situations they’ve never faced before are the costs of curiosity. Exploring the two books The Odyssey of Homer by Allen Mandelbaum, and 2001: Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke, the hidden meanings of adventure unveils itself.
The usual hero adventure begins with someone from whom something has been taken, or who feels there is something lacking in the normal experience available or permitted to the members of society. The person then takes off on a series of adventures beyond the ordinary, either to recover what has been lost or to discover some life.
In her book “The Open Door”, Helen Keller states: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” For a considerable number of people around the globe, known as type-T individuals, this quote defines their life motto. They take extreme risks and feel the desire to venture past the limits of safety in pursuit of a thrilling experience. These brief moments of adrenaline seem insufficient for people to come back for more after tasting the feeling, and yet they do. But why do they dare to tempt fate and thrive at the limits, without fearing the consequences?
Why did Columbus travel west? Why did Marco Polo head east? Because it is that pull, that unknown, that prospect of adventure that compels humans to seek new frontiers to explore.
Adventure stories focus on plot development over character development, steering away from existential writings to concentrate on pure action. Gelder (2004) explains “Characters are developed only in so far as the service the story and ‘realize the sense of danger’”. The explicit action in Tarzan of the Apes describing the constant struggle of surviving the
The word “risk” means the possibility of suffering a harmful event. Risk taking can bring either positive or negative result because anytime we take risks in life, there is a possibility of loss which can cause tension. There are a lot of people who take big risks and appear not to be affected by them. But, many of us feel very uneasy when faced with risk-taking; we may become worried about the risk. Although some people are content in life by just playing it safe and not courting any
An adventure can range on how much of a drastic change it has on your life. Starting from the bottom to the top is a goal that most people aspire. No one wants to be stuck in a job for the rest of their lives where there not going to be happy with what they are doing. In most cases you just think of kids’ right out of high school going to college to make something of themselves but in some other cases its older young adults and older adults that want to take the risk of going back to school to better themselves. There is no age limit on dreaming for what you want and for example most college students are taking the adventure of going to school and reaching their future ideal profession. If people didn’t have the motivation to aspire to be better we wouldn’t have doctors, lawyers, and fire fighters in our world. The world is filled with many people that just need to push to have adventure in their lives; people should not settle and be stuck in a job where they have to hate not only their jobs but sometimes their own lives. Our own parents for many people are living examples of people that want better lives for us they are the ones that show us that if we don’t make something of our lives we will regret it. Change will not come to us but we have to go after change. Taking an adventure in life is something you have to do
