Three Fundamental Ideas

Three Fundamental concepts/ideas: Throughout the spring semester of Biogeography and Macro-ecology the class has discussed as well as learned multiple foundation concepts that have provided us with a concrete understanding of several fundamental concepts of biogeography and macro-ecology. Through the reading of the Song of the Dodo, the biogeographical terms were represented and reinforced in various real life situations, which made them easier to remember. Although we did not spend a significant amount of time on macro-ecology with the readings of articles I definitely feel like I have a broad understanding of its concepts as well. When examining distribution, abundance and diversity of organisms I picked the Theory of Island Biogeography, …show more content…

Also, Species dispersal abilities would connect with extinction because if they are confined to one habitat and are not able to leave, with changes occurring this could have a negative affect on their survival. Species area relationship is directly connected to island biogeography; in that larger areas have more species compared to smaller areas. This can also relate to extinction in that the larger areas with more species would be subjected to lower extinction rates. Rarity can connect with extinction, in regards, to if a species is very rare, it has a higher probability of going extinct. Rarity can also link with the Island rule in that on some islands there are rare species due to the island rule and the species becoming larger or smaller than usual. Endemism could be affected to extinction if the species does not adapt to climate changes. Endemic species can also be linked to may be because of the Island Rule, because some of the species that have been affected by the Island rule are only found in those specific locations. Insular Biogeography looks at the various factors that can affect species richness, and can connect with extinction because insular biogeography can reference any isolated areas like a mountain top which can be subjected to higher rates of extinction. Insular biogeography is also a branch off of the Theory of Isalnd Biogeography, in which it just extends its isolation from being other seclusive areas rather than just an island. Climate change be linked to extinction and the island rule because if climates are changing, large mammals may have better survival if their body sizes are decreased which could benefit, giving them an increase in survival. Since extinction is important, scientist are
