1) Historians have called Thomas Jefferson in terms of his life and work an “enigma.” Explain what this means using three examples from the film.
Historians have called Thomas Jefferson an enigma because he’s a very mysterious guy. He’s a great writer but he’s very shy and he hates public speaking. He loves to read and play the violin. Jefferson endured the laws and never lost his faith in the future. Many say he is a shadow man not many people truly know him.
2) Discuss three ways in which the experiences and ideas of Thomas Jefferson shaped the Declaration of Independence and
He is best remembered as a great president and as the author of the Declaration of Independence. He also won lasting fame as a diplomat, a political thinker, and a founder of the Democratic Party. Jefferson's interests and talents covered an amazing range. He became one of the leading American architects of his time and designed the Virginia Capitol, the University of Virginia, and his own home, Monticello. He greatly appreciated art and music and tried to encourage their advancement in the United States. He arranged for the famous French sculptor Jean Houdon to come to America to make a statue of George Washington. Jefferson also posed for Houdon and for the famous American portrait painter Gilbert Stuart.
1. In the first paragraph of the declaration, Jefferson states the reason for the writing of this document. What reason does he give?
In the “Apostle of Republican Liberty” by Eugene R. Sheridan, the author presents a biography of Thomas Jefferson in honor of the 250th anniversary of the birth of the third president of the United States. The author cites him to be “The Foremost Champion of Liberty” of all of the Founding Fathers. In the biography, he speaks about the historical remarks that Jefferson made throughout his political life. Praising him as an icon for the achievements he made as one of the founding fathers. The author also includes all of the progressions that Jefferson did in his several roles as an accomplished lawyer, agronomist, educator, inventor, scientist, philosopher, linguist, archaeologist, musician, writer, architect, and statesman.
4. Jefferson acknowledged the audience, Congress, in his inaugural speech. He also referred to George Washington ("our first and greatest revolutionary character"). Did he mention his predecessor, John Adams? Did he refer to Adams's policies? What do you make of this?

Unlike some people, who are easily characterized and have definite opinions, Thomas Jefferson’s beliefs and intentions remain unclear to many. Simply stated, Ellis describes Jefferson as “the enigmatic and elusive touchstone for the most cherished convictions and contested truths in American culture” (51). His words were often not reflected in his actions and similarly, his thoughts on important matters appeared wavering. Despite this uncertainty, Thomas Jefferson played a dominant role in the establishment and maintenance of a new nation and continues to influence American culture and politics to this day.
Fawn M. Brodie, in the biography, Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History (1998), provides an in depth picture of the distressing private life and complex personality of Thomas Jefferson. When he was boy, he lived on a plantation in Virginia, where his father’s slaves raised him and became his alternative family. For Jefferson’s education, his father sent him to boarding school, where young Jefferson felt incongruous with a classroom filled with white children and missed dearly his slave friends. Later on, Jefferson studied to be a lawyer, a profession he hated and gladly abandoned for politics, which he did not fully embrace until the death of his wife. Thomas Jefferson was known as the third president who came into office, in United States. In his younger years, while attending College of William and Mary, he practiced law and became a member of the Continental Congress. (Monticello) He was considered part of the upper class and maintained a wholesome reputation. He later served as U.S minister to France and the U.S secretary of state. He then became the nation’s Vice President under the Presidency of John Adams, which led him to presidency where his first inaugural speech was presented on March 4, 1801 in Washington D.C. Before he became President of the United States, Jefferson took a major part in writing the Declaration of Independence. His first inaugural speech reflects his ideas of equality as well. This historical context has many disclosures that can be analyzed to understand the connection between our course material and the speech.

We always hear about Thomas Jefferson in our history classes, as one of the most influential American politicians at the time of the nation’s birth. His concept of individual freedoms strongly disagreed with the notion of a "guided republic" which he believed concentrated a great deal unchecked power among a few people. Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States of America who had strong beliefs about what was right and what was wrong. He himself not only upheld his beliefs, but he did betray his beliefs by doing certain things that directly went against his beliefs and his wrongful doings are noticed.
