Imagine you’re with a group of friends at a party, and it gets a little crazy. People are drinking and smoking outside and all around you. You are standing in the kitchen and someone hands you a drink, and there’s some beer in it. All of your friends are laughing and drinking and they urge you to do it too. They say, ‘Just do it, it’s not bad.’ You’ve never drunk alcohol or done drugs or anything like that. You don't want to, but you do it anyways because you’re afraid of what they’ll think about you if you don’t. Fear causes people to go against themselves and betray their morals, resulting in destruction. In the book, Things Fall Apart, the character Okonkwo is a fearsome warrior. In his of the village, Umuofia, he was known as being cold,
Throughout Chinua Achebe’s novel, Things Fall Apart, it is made very apparent how much the main character, Okonkwo, values manliness. Despite the fact that Okonkwo lived quite a few centuries ago, his story still shares some similarities with the way men today are pressured to be masculine. Okonkwo’s desire to be masculine affects him by causing him to be violent towards his family, view women as lesser than him, and produce a view that men shouldn’t have emotions. In the end, this desire causes his downfall, eventually causing him to take his own life.
Status. Social hierarchy. Importance in the world. These three words all mean the same thing, in their own respective ways. Whether it be the number of yams in one’s barn, or the number of Ferraris in their garage, they are both indicative of how successful one is.
I believe that the theme of The Outsiders is that: “Not everybody is like what you think they are”. This is proven to be true because of these next three paragraphs show how.
I highlighted a quote on chapter 11, page 60. Just when the boys thought they were finally free from everything and things were finally beginning to change for the better, more pain and suffering occurs. This is just insane. Walking with your barefoot when it is scorching hot outside made me wonder how they are going to make things better or else. Not being a pain or anything but I did tried walking with barefoot before during summer when I was going to a pool, it was 100 degree outsides, the ground was HOT. I couldn’t take it.
Notes [We see a girl and her two parents. They walk along near trees. Suddenly, a man from a bush jumps out at them. The man catches the woman, kills her with a knife, and kills the Dad.
Once a man of great power, who possessed many titles, now just another villager with uncontrollable aggression and dereliction of responsibility. In the novel, Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo begins as a man of high status, with much wealth and many titles. Despite his status, Okonkwo eventually becomes too negligent and angry, which leads to his banishment, his titles removed, and his home destroyed. After serving his time, he comes back to his village Umuofia, only to see colonizers taking over and disrespecting their culture. This causes him to be enraged and extremely aggressive towards the colonizers and their culture.
As a matter of fact, binge drinking would not necessarily lead to negative consequences. For example, “consider the individual who perceives that drinking alcohol is likely to lead to physical harm. This individual is perhaps less likely to engage in behaviors after drinking that are highly related to experiencing negative consequences relative to individuals who do not hold that belief” (root). Binge drinking in campus is universally recognized as misconduct, but the degree of its consequence is determined by the drinking belief of the drinkers. In certain occasions, such as birthday parties, binge drinking is inevitable. But if the college students hold the drinking belief that any immoral, illegal or dangerous activities should be avoided after binge drinking with their friends, in all probability, they would not suffer from the potential negative consequences. Additionally, when there exist a few fellows with proper alcohol awareness among the drinkers in a party, they can help lower the risk of alcohol-related hazards of their friends in the party significantly
Intro: “You will find peace not by trying to escape your problems, but by confronting them courageously. You will find peace not in denial, but in victory” -J. Donald Walters. When people are confronted with a challenge, they want to overcome said challenge in order to achieve a goal or to prove their courage, energy, or determination to themselves or others. In the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo contends with challenges by confronting and attempting to overcome them but gives up when the challenge proves too difficult to surmount.
Favorite Quote: “It is the things you cannot see coming that are strong enough to kill you” (Picoult 105). This quote is important to the book as a whole because of the twists that take place. Everyone knew that Kate had cancer and they always knew that losing her was a possibility. However, Anna and her family never thought that she would die young because she did not have a life threatening disease, like her sister.
Ali looks good person from inside, but when he goes out with his friends he totally change like his not the same and at the same time he thinks and take care of his family.
Alcohol is something that some of us can't resist and we have different relationships with it. Some people drink it because they’re going through something painful while others drink just for fun. Whether it’s for fun or not drinking have become a huge issue for society and statics show that many people are dying in accidents under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
My favorite quote will always be by Sappho in which she says, “Someone, I tell you, in another time will remember us.” She was right. She’s remembered for being a gay poet and is immortalized despite a lot of her works not being found completely. It’s one of my favorite quotes because identifying as a nonbinary queer person who also likes girls, I can relate to Sappho a lot when she writes about her desire for love and personal heartbreaks. This quote also brings me ease as even in “another time” someone will still remember me. I think we all want to leave a legacy of some sort, and for me I want my legacy to be centered around my experience and accomplishments as an American born Punjabi artist and social activist, who was also highly active in the LGBTQ+ community. I want someone to remember me because it is a vicious cycle that people of color and members of the color in the LGBTQ+ community get forgotten in history. History is white- washed. But the idea that I will do enough in my life to be remembered in some shape or form, reminds me that my efforts and failures as a Punjabi artist and social activist are just part of a legacy I am starting.
“A status symbol is an instrument you clash when you want someone to know you are there.” -William Sansom Throughout history individuals had possessions that indicated their wealth or high social status, or professional status, which is known as a status symbol. In Chinua Achebe’s novel, Things Fall Apart, the main character Okonkwo surrounds his life around the concept of achieving a high and mighty status symbol. While making these important, Okonkwo and the people suffered from negative consequences.
He was afraid of being thought weak.” (Achebe 61) Okonkwo main fear in this book was being weak, and this is the root of all of his problems. Okonkwo also had some anger issues, and wasn't very pleasant with his family. When he saw that his banana tree had some leaves missing, he thought one of the women killed the tree.
Notes and Quotes Suicide: “ ‘It is against our custom,’ said one of the men. ‘It is an abomination for a man to rake his own life. It is an offense against the Earth, and a man who commits it will not be buried by his clansmen. His body is evil, and only strangers may touch it. That is why we ask your people to bring him down, because you are strangers.’ ”
