In Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”, O’Brien created several allusions that each character endured during the Vietnam War. Throughout the story were vast representations of the things soldiers carried both mentally and physically. The things they carried symbolized their individual roles internally and externally. In addition to symbolism, imagination was a focal theme that stood out amongst the characters. This particular theme played a role as the silent killer amongst Lt. Cross and the platoon both individually and collectively as a group. Shame is a constant theme in The Things They Carried. Soldiers felt like they had to go to war, but fear of embarrassing themselves, their families, and their towns if they ran. People in the story cope by imagining things for motivation and pleasure. Imagination can help soldiers, but also does not help in war when the coping distracts one from important situations. The most common coping mechanism in the war stories has to do with women because they were used as security blankets during war. Soldiers use women, imagined and real, to offer an escape from war, but due to their inability to understand the war, the women cannot help them cope.

Also it simultaneously delves into the realization that all these things that they carry hold a false sense of security and hope. The main character Jimmy Cross is introduced within the first sentence, instantly suggesting symbolism through the name “Cross”. The name itself represents the cross he must bear, exhibiting weight, responsibility, sacrifice and the physical as well as the psychological gravity of his situation.

In Tim O'Brien's book, "The Things They Carried", it's about the man named, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, who is going though many sacrifices and obstacles when it comes to this girl back home where he leaved and her name was Martha, but then it makes him realize where he is at and why he is there which later makes him see the conflicts its caused him and his epiphany to see the truth of it all.    The story is about a lieutenant who goes to war in Vietnam and leaves the girl from college he loves behind but she sends him letters them realizes  the he is there to fight for peoples lives and not to fall in love with a girl that he only went on one date with back in college.    While Lieutenant Cross goes off to Vietnam for the war he has to sacrifice and leave the girl he loves named Martha behind but when he leaves he takes many pictures of her with him and she writes him letter as well so he could keep them with him while he is away. And while he is away she sends him his lucky pebble to remind him of her and he just thinks about how much he loves her and can't have her in his life.
