Title : Mandatory Drug Test,Make It Required
Thesis Statement : Colleges should have mandatory drug test so that the school can filter out the drug users and guide them for a better future.
I.Introduction
When people hear the word drugs, they always say that it is abusive. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary,”drug is defined as a substance that is used as a medicine. It is also defined as a substance that is used as a medicine. It is also defined as an illegal and often harmful substance(such as heroin, cocaine,LSD or marijuana) that people take for pleasure. Nowadays, people took drugs as a hobby. Also teenagers are using drugs for some reasons. Some of them belong to a broken family. Others are lack of attention of parents. They taught

Many students used prohibited drugs. Schools must required drug testing to filter out the drug users. If they already know the people who used drugs, they will proceed to counseling. In that way, they will know the reasons of the students why they are taking prohibited drugs. The guidance counselor is the one who will guide the students for good. If someone is detected using drugs it is not important that they are caught doing wrong and they will not be kicked out of the school.(Pemberton/2011/par.3) Instead, he or she will be helped by the school for guidance. Mandatory drug test can help for student's future career. If he or she is not guided by the school, he or she will not succeed in life. Mandatory drug test can also help from student's safety. It can benefit a lot someone's …show more content…
There are many reasons why the school must have drug testing. A student must submit a urine that should be used for detection.(Mo/2011/par.1). The school must have a mission that there should be no drug users in the campus. Everyone must succeed in life. One reason is to preparethe studentsfor profitable employment. They are schools which have advisory councils that are made up of businesses taht would be potential businesses to hire the students that support their expertise. Through this, the school is moving forward toward its mission. If someone is tested positive, there should be no punishment. They have to meet with a counselor and they can participate in an activity which can help in avoiding drug abuse and
The goal of mandatory drug testing would be to reduce student substance by deterring substance use, detecting substance use, and the influence of the behaviors of students peers. Students involved in extracurricular activities, such as sports that are subject to in school drug testing, report less drug use than students in high school that do not play a sport and do not get drug tested. By drug testing the Athens student body would help by insure a safe, secure, and healthy school environment where students can reach their full academic potential to learn. Athens High schools goal should be to identify students with possible drug abuse issues and to intervene. Students should be required to take drug test to be allowed to park on campus. Less drugs in
Drug testing has been going on for a long time and they have been used for different occupations. They have been used for teachers, medical jobs, and even jobs people wouldn't think had to have drug tests. The sad thing is they are using them on students. When a person uses drug tests on students for no apparent reason, that's just basically torturing them. This is occurring all throughout America and is really pointless. A child would not want some person they don't really know seeing their personal information and knowing if they are guilty or not. Having drug tests for student athletes is not beneficial because of the Extreme Cost, the Mental Health Effects, and the Fourth Amendment.
of drug use. Also, all students must submit to the test, making it 1) suspicionless, and 2)
Secondly, even when telling the students that the drug test is approaching, it does not decrease the usage of drugs. In those high schools that tested athletes, between the drug test surveys given to students by University of Michigan research investigators, there was roughly a 94 percent agreeance between the students at both of the schools that implement drug testing policies and those who do not, that they had been using drugs within the last year (Swanbrow). Furthermore, the test do not deter students from taking other drugs that will not show up on the test. The University of Michigan research investigators even surveyed experienced marijuana users and asked how the drug test would impact their usage of it and other drugs. The students essentially said that even when knowing the test was coming they were still going to take the drugs and still manage to pass the test by using others urine for example. The data from students surveyed from drug testing and non-drug testing schools stated that their usage of drugs was almost exactly the same, roughly a six percent difference between the two. Therefore, the drug testing programs
NCEE’s says that “the goal of the mandatory drug testing program was to reduce student substance use in three ways--by deterring substance use, by detecting substance use, and by having spillover effects on other students in school as they observe and are influenced by the behaviour of their peers.”
Drug testing students allows them to be successful in the future. Drug testing allows for early detection and intervention. If you do drug test students it increases chances for students to be successful. Drug addiction leads to academic and athletic failure. Even a single use of a drug thats intoxicating could affect a person's performance in school
Other people believe that mandatory drug tests aren’t necessary at all because students haven’t progressed to addiction yet. Some users aren’t really addicted yet, but most are so we need to have some tests and cure most students that are
I disagree with mandatory drug testing for students in public schools. I think it is the parent responsibility to have this done if they choose. In our book on page 68 under public schools and I quote, “With all the concern about drug use by athletes, the first groups of students to be widely subjected to urine screening for drugs were those involved in team sports. In a legal challenge to this process, the U.S. Supreme Court in 1995 allowed drug testing of athletes, based partly on evidence from the school in questions that its student athletes were at a higher than average risk for drug use. Many schools since have adopted policies that include other extracurricular activities, and a 2002 Supreme Court case upheld those programs as well.
In high schools across the country there are students that are using drugs. Some of them play a sport and are using drugs. Some people say that they started because of peer pressure, and sometimes that might be the case. But other times they might have started by themselves. Some students might also be using the drugs to cheat in the sport too. Therefore student athletes should be drug tested because positive drug tests could eliminate teams from competing, student athletes could be physically harmed by using drugs, drug testing keeps schools and parents aware of what is happening with their students.
In the United States, 27.2 percent of high school student participated in illicit drug use. While this number has lowered in the past two decades, dug use among teens is still a large issue. To combat this problem many schools have opted to drug test their students. Schools do have the right to drug test their students but there are constitutional limits in which a school can require mandatory drug testing. The constitutional limits include; health risks and personal injury risks.
Random drug testing is a part of a drug prevention program used in high schools. The students are tested during school hours and tested for recent use of illicit drugs. Random drug testing requires anyone despite prevailing circumstances with drug history. It can also require students involved in extracurricular activities to be drug tested randomly if they are wanting to continue participating (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2017). Before students can sign up for extracurriculars they are required to have consent from their parents. The parents are informed of the drug testings that come with the extracurriculars. Extracurriculars could involve: sports, clubs, organizations, cheer, and band. Schools are also allowed to conduct a drug test due to suspicion. If someone is suspicious or has evidence that a student is using drugs they may be asked to take a urine test. Suspicion would include: the students showing any physical signs or behavioral patterns that relate back to drug use or school staff or officials feeling concerned (Nelson, Rose, and Lutz, 2011). The reason behind random drug testing is to put an end to drug misuse as well as terminating illegal drug use. Firstly, Schools hope
So what is drug testing? How does it work? Students must sign a contract which states that they consent to random drug testing in order to play a sport, join a club, or do a school activity. Students are taken out of class periodically to be tested. Types of tests are hair, blood, urine, or saliva. The tests will reveal the use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, steroids, and PCP. Schools can also test for alcohol in the last 48 hours using a breathalyzer test or urine sample(qtd. "At Issue: Drug Testing.").
The booklet Making Sense of Student Drug Testing: Why Educators Are Saying No shares the opinions of the authors the Drug Policy Alliance and the American Civil Liberties Union based on what they gathered through their research. Although the booklet covers several topics including it being ineffective and legally risky I’m going to focus on cost. Before drug testing used to be targeted towards athletes, but now it's being considered for all students. Just like with learning one method can’t be effective for all
Introducing the fear to students on drug testing that will directly affect them, will most likely decrease the use of drugs being abused. The president of the Institute for Behavior and Health explains that RSDT (Random Student Drug Test) could be used on any athlete, any day, and any time without notice (DuPont et al ¶6). Making the testing random will help eliminate any cheating or strategizing that the students who would test positive could be doing. Keith Ablow, MD and psychiatrist published an article in 2011 said that, both varsity and junior varsity teams should be tested with results kept private (¶6). To only test Varsity athletes would be unacceptable because JV athletes could cause just as much harm to athletes around them as to themselves. To make it fair and because kids follow by example, coaches would test also (Ablow ¶ 9). When a positive test appears, there should be punishment, but not to the extent of expulsion. Guidelines to RSDT programs say it is not supposed to end up in punishment for drug tests (DuPont et al ¶25). Not giving any punishment would defeat the purpose because then kids would not care to stop their drug use. Random drug tests to not only student-athletes, but students in general will promote a healthier lifestyle without drug use (DuPont et al ¶5). Students should be on edge not knowing if they are going to be tested or
People may think that drug testing the students is a right idea because, they would know if their child is taking drugs. It could also affect them during school or during a game if they do take drugs. The parents could also find out if the kids at school were selling drugs that could harm themselves or others. If they could stop the kids addictions.
