ABSTRACT
Most studies on Gender Based Violence have focused on physical, sexual, and psychological manifestations alone. This dissertation seeks to highlight and draw attention to the types of violence and the socio legal conditions of the victims who has faced domestic violence and the development of women and her family, i.e. Children and health.
Domestic violence results in deepening poverty and compromises educational attainment and curtails developmental opportunities for women. It leads to physical violence, promotes sexual exploitation and the risk of contracting HIV infection, maternal morbidity and mortality, and trafficking of women and girls. Some women were kept totally financially dependent and not allowed enough money to pay bills or to buy food, clothes and other essentials. Others were coerced into endlessly servicing their partner’s debts or subsidizing their entertainment while the women and children went without essentials. Women from a range of culturally and linguistically diverse communities were denied money to send home to their families, while their partners happily remitted funds to their side of the family. Nevertheless, financial abuse was also experienced independently of physical abuse.
Women’s narratives are used in this study to reveal abuses and their socio legal conditions after the abuse as a systematic means through which many women are forced to take responsibility for the entire economic burden and how much liberty or financial freedom is given to them for taking care of expenses of family including children. Qualitative data is employed to demonstrate the abuse entrenches poverty and dependence of women and children and has severe, long-term impacts that have barely been acknowledged to
