Essay Prompt #11 Theodore Roosevelt often known as Teddy or TR was an American author, soldier, explorer and reformer. He was the 26th President of the United States. He was the president from 1901 to 1909. TR was born on October 27th, 1858 in Manhattan, New York. He was one of four children. Roosevelt struggled as a young kid being that he had poor health and debilitating asthma. He repeatedly experienced sudden nighttime asthma attacks that caused the experience of being smothered to death. Although he had these struggles, he never let that stop him from being a kid, very energetic and mischievous. Roosevelt 's father significantly influenced him. His father had been a prominent leader in New York 's cultural affairs; he helped to found the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and had been especially active in mobilizing support for the Union war effort. Roosevelt wrote: "My father, Theodore Roosevelt, was the best man I ever knew. He combined strength and courage with gentleness, tenderness, and great unselfishness. He would not tolerate in us children selfishness or cruelty, idleness, cowardice, or untruthfulness." On September 6,1901 President William Mckinley was assassinated at the Pan-American Exhibition in Buffalo, New York. He was shaking hands when a 28 year old anarchist named Czolgosz approached him and shot him twice in the chest. Czolgosz was about to fire a third time when finally William’s bodyguards. William was killed because he was the head of what Czolgosz thought was the corrupt government. As the days went by the president's wounds were getting worse and worse. On September 14, Mckinley died. This meant that Vice President Theodore Roosevelt immediately became president. On September 16, Mckinley had his funeral and was transported by train to his hometown of Canton,

During his time as president, he brought many accomplishments and contributions to the United States of America. He always thought about the best interest of the people before making any final decisions. His decisions were never based on someone’s opinion; however, it was all about bettering the people’s future and their safety. President Teddy Roosevelt was a rich man prior to becoming the president but the poor was his main concern. He had a wife and six children. From leading the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American war, becoming president, and finally going on an expedition in Africa to collect over 11,000 specimens for the Smithsonian’s Natural History museum; Teddy Roosevelt’s life was far from boring. I think he’s especially appealing to me as I’ve always strived to stay determined in trying to finish whatever project I’m undertaking. It’s not always easy, so people like Roosevelt inspire me to go through with completing whatever task might lie ahead of me. He just showed so much determination throughout his entire life. What does it really mean to be determined though? I’m going to look at how the definition has changed over the years, how Roosevelt displays it, and perhaps one of his greatest displays of determination throughout his life.

From birth until his tardy teens, Roosevelt suffered greatly from asthma, was frail and sickly, and was near-sighted, which coerced him to wear glasses. His father took him for rides in the night to avail him breathe with fresh air and inspirited him to build up his body with strenuous exercises and sports in efforts to build his body and mind. In 1876, Roosevelt was accepted to Harvard College. After graduating, he decided to enter politics and in 1881, at the age of 23, he won election to the first of three terms in the Incipient York State Assembly as a Republican.
Americans have become used to politicians who will not go against their party’s line. Instead of having numerous free thinking elected officials who come together to ensure the welfare of society, we have two parties that control almost everything. This was not how Theodore Roosevelt led our country. He was a visionary and ethical leader. This paper explains why by describing Theodore Roosevelt’s use of visionary leadership to protect America’s natural resources by being an emotionally flexible leader and using his inspirational motivation. Theodore Roosevelt was an Ethical Leader because he put service before self by resigning from the position of Assistant Secretary of the Navy to fight in the Spanish American War and was a free thinker who went against his party to protect the welfare of society. Theodore Roosevelt has personal relevance in my development as a leader by modeling service before self and allowing me to see how I can improve my inspirational motivation. In order to understand Theodore Roosevelt as a leader, you should first know the impact of his visionary leadership.
