How effective is Luhrmann’s film Romeo and Juliet as a modern day appropriation of Shakespeare's play you ask? Baz Luhrmann's appropriation of the original play of “Romeo And Juliet” is highly effective as it is modernized to meet the interests and expectations of a 20th century teenage audience. Throughout the original 16th century play, Shakespeare develops the themes of family rivalry and love. The theme of family rivalry has been implemented into the original play through the conflict between two powerful families in the city of Verona. Throughout his appropriation of the play, Baz Luhrmann successfully preserves the same concept of family rivalry but modernises it by portraying the two families as two large business corporations and brands who are constantly in competition with each other. Shakespeare implements the theme of love through main character Romeo being made to resemble and fulfil the role of a typical "Petrarchan lover". Luhrmann also effectively integrates the theme of love through his successful use of filmic techniques to illustrate the unbreakable love between Romeo and Juliet whose love resembles and portrays the characteristics of a 20th century relationship. Using these modern elements, Luhrmann’s film effectively appeals to the contemporary teenage audience whilst powerfully conveying the themes of family rivalry and love. These adaptations made by Luhrmann in his film create a more comprehensible meaning as teenagers can relate to the film with a
In the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo’s Motif of being on a ship guided by the stars is throughout the play to symbolically accent the moment and push the play forward as he heads for his ultimate death. The first time that Romeo mentions his motif is in Act I scene iv, right before Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio go to the Capulet party. This motif is introduced when Romeo says, “I fear too early, for my mind misgives Some consequence yet hanging in the stars Shall bitterly begin his fearful date... By some vile forfeit of untimely death.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet’s central idea is about soulmates, a relationship of being together despite all odds. Before Romeo and Juliet met, they were both involved with another. When is their love for one another different from the way they felt towards Rosaline and Paris. How did the people around them notice these changes?
Anais Nin once said, “You don’t find love, it finds you. It’s got a little to do with destiny, fate, and what’s written in the stars”. It is believed by numerous people that fate determines everything that happens in their lives, and they have no control over it, because their fate is already written in the stars. Fate is a somewhat controversial topic, but in the love story, Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, fate is looked upon as inalterable, and isn’t influenced by the person themselves. In this tragedy, the idea, fate is written in the stars, is shown through the literary devices, foreshadowing and symbolism, which shows readers that, everything happens for a reason, and fate is beyond their control.
In Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, two star-cross’d lovers of enemy households are no longer entities, and cascade into each others souls, and more specifically, fall deeply in love. They develop an obsessive relationship with their feelings for one another; they have a constant desire to be together, even though their emotions are based on sight alone. The addiction was so enslaving, that their only solution to their family fued was to turn to their one and only lover. Romeo and Juliet’s addictive relationship has lead to their unavoidable departure, because it has caused their secret marriage, failed Mantua escape plan, and suicide.
Did you know that feelings and emotions are different? Feelings are what’s in the mind and heart, but emotions are how we display our feelings as human beings. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare turns the traditional ideas of love, both familial and romantic upside down. In this tragedy, Shakespeare accomplishes this using three main ideas. First, although life has much sorrow, love can still make things happier. Second, love when taken to an extreme can spiral into madness, and third, cliche gender specific roles in romantic relationships are not absolute and don’t necessarily follow the normal pattern.
William Shakespeare, the author of, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, expresses several motifs abundantly and very bluntly; though his motifs are easy to find, they are deeply meaningful. One of the seven motifs that are commonly addressed in this play is books. The book motif shows how we judge people. On the outside, someone could be pulchritudinous and look kind or the cover could be elegant or extravagant; but the inside could be distasteful or unkind. People’s lives are like a book; inside their pages, they are set on a solid course to which they follow their own fate.
Romeo and Juliet’s love is often the primary focus of one of Shakespeare’s most famous works, but what is less often discussed is how this theme is embedded through motifs. The main motifs of this play are day and night, with night often being associated with bad and light often being associated with good. In William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”, Shakespeare uses the motifs of day and night to develop Juliet’s relationship with Romeo. The first mention of these motifs is in Act II, scene ii, whilst Romeo is outside Juliet's window at night. It is at this moment that Romeo proclaims his love for her in one of the most well known literary quotes, “It is the East, and Juliet is the sun!”(II:ii:343:403).
There are numerous theme concepts within Romeo and Juliet and seem to be not only in only in concentrated areas but throughout the production. Even if the production is quite old many of the prominent themes can still be applied to modern day society. In the story the readers will take notice to Romeo’s tendency to act rashly and often with delayed thought. The scene where Romeo first meets Juliet and then leaves is a perfect example of Romeo’s behavior as he had been ‘in love’ with a girl named Rosaline and was still enduring the pain of their breakup. Yet whenever had to leave the company of Juliet he claimed to, “...never seen true beauty until night.” This tendency known as transience is very common today as people today are so focused
The theme is proven throughout the play such as the balcony scene where Romeo and Juliet confess their love to one another after some hours of seeing each other and the Friar warning
At the end of act 1 scene 5 we are left with one line which sums up
This theme shows the importance of really thinking through something before pursuing it. For example, Friar Lawrence says, “But when I came, some minute ere the time/ Of her awakening, here untimely lay/ The noble Paris and true Romeo dead” (477). If Romeo would not have been so quick to kill himself, the Friar would have gotten there in enough time to explain the situation and everyone would be alive. Romeo’s quick actions show how impatience and thoughtlessness can lead to a horrible
The word love can mean many things. Love can be an object, emotion, and a life. However, love could lead to a loss of power, prosperity, and status. In the literary work “Romeo and Juliet” written by William Shakespeare, the readers are introduced to a tragic love story. In this play, readers are also shown the different perspectives of love and the many downfalls it could lead to. The central theme of this work is the recklessness of love. The theme is significant because it is shown throughout the whole story and it’s a strong force that takes place of all the other emotions and values. In this play, Shakespeare uses characters to present different aspects of love. In addition, Nurse, Mercutio, and Romeo completely show what actual love is and what it is like to lose it due to their experiences.
