Theme Struggle For Mastery In The Call Of The Wild

Moving to a new place and starting something new in life can take perseverance to get used to and adjust. In the story of The Call of the Wild, Buck the dog is kidnapped and sold into a new life where he has to adapt and learn lessons through difficult situations. In contrast to Buck, my mother had to raise her young daughter through poverty and school which took perseverance. While my mother’s challenges weren’t as life threatening or severe, she moved to a new place and had to adapt to her new schooling with dealing with the struggle of raising a child. Like my mother, Buck was put into a new area and new job that he had to adapt to, while dealing with the extra problems such as fighting with dogs and getting new owners. This year’s summer reading options were marvelous. It was a hard choice to choose what book to read, but in the end, I chose The Call of the Wild by Jack London. The Call of the Wild was an adventurous tale about a dog named Buck and his adventures as he was sold into a harsh life of relentless labor in the cold and brutal North. The author of this classic novel, Jack London, was a short-story writer and a prolific American novelist. He was born in San Francisco, California. He was known for his other novels, The Sea Wolf and White Fang. I chose this particular novel because I love reading classic novels and it seemed to be an interesting and exciting story. Finally, this was the novel of my choice because it was recommended to me by my grandma.

He has a very thick coat suited for cold weather and large, powerful muscles. He had proven himself worthy after him and spitz had finally reached their breaking and Buck won the fight with Spitz. After Spitz was dead he thought that he deserved the title of lead dog. After he was sold to Mercedes and Hal, they worked for their team so hard that buck had collapsed in the reins and Hal attempted to shoot him, if it wasn’t for John Thornton. He saved Buck from being shot and they developed a strong bond.

Jack London’s novel, The Call of the Wild, is about the transformation of Buck. As a dog who was raised as a domestic animal, he must learn to adapt to his new wild surroundings after he is snatched away from civilization. The author's message of this novel is “survival of the fittest.” Buck’s only chance of staying alive is to display his strength and fight. This quote displays Buck’s thoughts on the rules of the wild; the only way to survive. It is clearly shown that having superior power is the only route to not being killed. Each dog, no matter which breed or age, learns these rules almost instantly and gets put into their place; their journey to proving themselves and rising to the top begins. This citation is significant to the theme, because it depicts the valuable law of the wilderness, which is “survival of the fittest.” This quote describes the “eat or be eaten” world that Buck is now adapting to in order to live. The theme, “survival of the of the fittest,” is shown in this quote, and seems quite gruesome. However, “...master or be mastered...Kill or be killed, eat or be eaten…” is exactly how the animals in the wild sustain their places in their “communities.”

Most of the other dogs stay away from Buck because of his size and strength, but Spitz becomes his constant enemy, from whom he learns an important lesson. Spitz fights with Curly, one of the dogs that is friendly to Buck. Buck watches as all the other dogs attack and kill Curly once he is down. Buck is determined he will never be put in the same position. He will fight to the death if necessary.

In schools and counties all over, the book The Call of the Wild is being banned from 8th grade curriculum. For reasons such as that the book is based on true events, that the book describes actions of animal abuse that still occur today, and that banning books causes illiteracy and it caused by illiteracy, I do not believe that The Call of the Wild should be taken out of 8th grade curriculum.

Once you begin a book, you’re thrown into a story. As you read you begin to see the true meaning of the book. You see the theme. Character development shows you how the character progressed throughout the story and changed to enhances the theme. Plot events show the character’s reaction to an event to enhance the theme. Setting puts the character in a place that they have to adapt to, which helps bring out the theme. Although each book has its very own unique theme, all authors use character development, plot events, and setting to express the theme.

At the beginning, Buck is terrified of Spitz and strives to avoid him and do everything right. Soon, though, Buck longs to be the lead dog and goes out of his way to cause trouble for Spitz. This ultimately leads to a fight between the two, with Buck emerging as the new lead dog.

Buck came to mastery of his will to survive he new how to fight he had that in him   There were fierce that brought buck to mastery so when he bristled and showed his teeth”. (london 49) This prove that buck was fit to live in the wild. He could hunt and kill when he need to. Also he was a leader he wanted to be a model for the other dogs but if he needed to he would kill them. Lastly, Buck learned through his time in the wild that he needed to be strong and the master.    At one point in the novel, Buck mastered Spitz, all the sled dogs to prove that he was the master of everything.  Each one of these tasks were not easy for Buck. “Mercy did not exist in the primordial life it was misunderstood for fear and such misunderstanding for fear and such made for death kill or killed eat or be eaten was the law” ( London 77).  Buck showed the theme struggle for mastery when he realized he needed to fight to survive and be the leader. He is able to change and accept the hard conditions in the Northland and overcome the obstacles because he is more smarter and has many much more imagination than any of the other

In the beginning of the book, Buck must adapt to the cold and cruelness of his new life in order to survive with very little food and recognition. First, Buck has to adapt to being transported to the North and learn to be a sled dog. For example, when he lived with the judge he slept wherever and whenever he wanted, but now that he is in the North he can only sleep under the snow and for few hours. Since, Buck learns that to live and carry on through his journey he has to make some changes from his old lifestyle. Second, Buck finds food for himself in order to survive and pull the sled longer. For instance, Buck steals food off of the man‘s plate because he is starving. Since, Buck can put his instincts into action, adapt and can be a good sled dog and stay alive. Last, Buck gets little recognition and learns to use his instincts and care for himself. For example, Buck gains confidence in himself to

Buck undergoes physical changes as he grows stronger and more powerful. After several months in the Klondike, Buck Loses all his civilized, domestic behaviors. Not only does Buck change morally; he also changes physically.” His development ( or retrogression) was rapid. His muscles became heart is iron, and he grew Callous to our ordinary pain”(24). Buck’s physical superiority is important in a number of ways. His heightened sense me and him constantly alert to the surrounding dangers. The quicker he is aware of danger, the quicker he can react to it. Bucks physical superiority also gives them an advantage over the other dogs. Because he is stronger, he is able to defeat his attackers. Being in superior physical condition also allows back to get the most nutrition from the poor food available. Obviously, without physical superiority, buck would be unable to survive and such hostile

For at least a full chapter, the team works to deny Spitz his power as lead dog, when finally one night Buck fights Spitz to the death, and he wins. In this quote his victory is described “Buck stood and looked on, the successful champion, the dominant primordial beast who made his kill and found it good.’’ (London 43). When Spitz is killed it shows he is unfit to be the alpha dog of the pack, and Buck becomes the ‘dominant primordial beast’ meaning he’s the most fit to become the alpha dog, showing this by killing

The ability to critically review a book is an essential skill that every academician should possess. Academicians should have the capacity to identify the central theme of an author in a book. They should also understand the way the author has presented the theme in the book. Without these capabilities, reading books are only waste of time because it is not beneficial reading a book if one does not understand it.

The author of The Call of the Wild, Jack London, heavily influenced the literary world with his inspirational works, specifically surrounding the theme of Naturalism. London followed the same theme, among others, in many of his works, focusing on how the environment affects its inhabitants and the details of the environment itself. The descriptions of nature London took the time to include in his books and the way they affect the story is what makes his works truly remarkable. He strongly committed himself to his works and put a great deal of effort into researching them to ensure accuracy. In The Call of the Wild, there are three main themes that are made evident: naturalism, coming of age, and loss of innocence. Naturalism is what London is most known for, and is shown through his attention to the surroundings of his characters. Coming of age was displayed through specific life changing events that altered Buck’s perspective. And finally, loss of innocence can be seen in the gradual, but sure decline of Buck’s morals.
