We wake up everyday to different weather, either good or bad, however our emotions are depended upon it. One September day arose, rain was falling and so were my emotions. I felt sad for no reason, I should have felt happy because it was Saturday, but no matter what happened, I was down. In the Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger uses weather to exploit emotion. As rain approaches many people start to feel depressed, but also content. Holden explains why he believes people are crazy for leaving the cemetery just because of the rain. He starts to talk about what the scenery looks like, and how he feels. Holden states “It rained on his lousy tombstone, and it rained on the grass on his stomach. All the visitors that were visiting the cemetery started running like hell over their cars. That’s what really drove me crazy” (172). Holden becomes sad as he sees everyone leave just because of the rain, he feels depressed that people would just leave their loved ones alone. Holden's emotions are depressing, but he will also show a sign of joy due to the weather. Holden changes to a happy state of mind as he sees the many parents hide under the carousel for cover. He talks about feeling happy as he views Phoebe going around and around on the carousel. He states “It began to rain like a bastard. All the parents and mothers and everybody went over and stood right under the roof of the carousel. I felt so damn happy all of the sudden, the way Phoebe was going around and around and around” (233). Holden will not let the rain change her happiness, he consumes happiness and feels like he may cry. Overall, rain has played a key role in showing emotion, but the snow seems to take a different turn on things. Salinger shows that the cold can pick up emotions to make people feel despondent and lonely. Holden describes a time in the city when he felt like he had vanished from life. He talks about crossing the road, but then everytime he would cross he would feel gone. He projects “It was kind of a crazy afternoon, terrifically cold, and no sun out or anything, you would feel like you were disappearing every time you crossed a road” (8). When Holden says he feels like he is disappearing, he is saying that his emotion is lonely and
