“Thank You Ma’am” Have you ever wanted to help someone in need? Well, that's exactly how Mrs. Washington felt when she crossed paths with someone who tried to steal from her. In the story, “Thank You Ma’am,” the author, Langston Hughes, tries to illustrate many themes in the book, but it later seems very evident that the theme is: in order to build a stronger community everyone must help each other out. Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones demonstrates the theme many times. For example, after Roger tries to steal her purse Mrs. Washington takes Roger to her home to clean up his face and feed him. As she scolds him she mentions something very unusual, she says “ ‘. . . And your face is dirty. I got a great mind to wash your face for you.”
Throughout my life I have experienced many trials that are quite different to that of the narrator in “Theme for English B”; however, there are some similarities such as his life experiences, that can be compared to those of the narrator. In this poem Langston Hughes writes of a man who is given an assignment with very abstract and philosophical instructions for writing this paper. Accordingly, the narrator has some difficulties at first because he thinks of how different he and the professor is, saying “It’s not easy to know what is true for you or me at twenty-two, my age. But I guess I’m what I feel and see and hear” (16-18). Consequently, the narrator realizes the difference between his life in Harlem and the life of his white professor. This causes the narrator to be skeptical of how the professor may receive the narrators’ interpretation of the assignment. Though the narrator and I share similar characteristics and experiences it is the differences that make the most impact throughout this paper. Three major differences are his teacher’s assignment, the colleges view of him, and his life in general. While Hughes does provide much background information on the narrator’s past, he gives multiple examples of his life a student and as a citizen living at the YMCA in Harlem.
The use of character foil in “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes reveals how Mrs. Jones shows herself through Roger. Mrs. Jones and Rogers contrast with one another ends up allowing Roger to bring out the best in himself. The story begins with Mrs. Jones not punishing Roger for trying to steal her purse but acting compassionate and helpful to Roger. The large woman, Mrs. Jones brings Roger back to her home and lets him wash his face and he asks ¨You gonna take me to jail?” asked the boy, bending over the sink. ¨Not with that face, I would not take you nowhere,¨ said the woman.¨ (pg.2) Mrs. Jones shows the quality of being kind to the boy who tried to snatch her pocketbook, which reveals that she is a good person. Mrs. Jones showed her personality
Langston Hughes is famous for his many great poems and was a very talented man. He wrote a poem in college called “Theme for English B”. In Langston Hughes’s poem, he uses imagery of racial differences and a bold tone to undermine the teacher’s authority. He also to expresses the universal idea that intolerance often comes out of individual assumption. Langston’s confusion of the topic of the paper causes him to write the entire paper about the paper.
Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri. His parents got divorced when he was a child and his dad dad moved to Mexico shortly after. He was then raised by grandmother who took care of him until he was thirteen. When he turned thirteen he moved to Illinois to live with his mom and stepdad. Hughes started writing poetry when he moved to Illinois. He graduated from high school in Cleveland, which is where his family eventually resided permanently. After high school, he lived in Mexico for about a year and traveled to Africa and Europe. Hughes also attended Columbia University for a year after his dad agreed to pay for his college. Hughes dropped out after facing discrimination at the school, although he did love living in Harlem. He has mentioned that his major writing influences were Walt Whitman, Carl Sandburg,
It was a normal night for Mrs. Jones, until she found herself facing the young teen that had just tried to mug her. Roger, the young teen, was not expecting to be fed and treated nicely by Mrs. Jones. This is exactly what happened when the woman trusted him and brought him into her home. Not only did she feed him, but she also gave him ten dollars to buy a pair of blue suede shoes. That being said, Mrs. Jones is a wise, motherly, and generous character in “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes.
You and your grandma are taking a walk on some paths and are enjoying every bit of it. You hear some footsteps behind you and you expect it to be just somebody running and they are going to pass you. You’re looking the other way and don’t notice that your grandma had fallen. You finally look the other way and your grandma is gone. You look behind you cannot find anyone in sight. Later that month you find out that it was the man that was “running” behind you that day. In Thank you ma’am, the author, Langston Hughes, a short story about respect, shows that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones experienced kind of the same thing with Roger. Roger wanted to steal some suede shoes from Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones but in the end, she gave him
One should be able to forgive because one may be going through a tough time and love and support are all they need. In the short story “Thank you, M’am” by Langston Hughes a young kid named Roger who runs into an old woman named Mrs. Jones on the street and feels the need to steal her pocketbook from her purse in order to get the shoes he wants. Langston Hughes conveys this claim by using the literary elements setting, theme, and tone. During the beginning of the story in order for Hughes to foreshadow the beginning of the story so Hughes used the literary element setting.
They're where many themes in this short story. One theme I found in this short story is people always deserve a second chance. There were lots of craft moves used to develop the theme. The two that I think most supported the theme are 3rd person narrator and dialogue. I say this because Hughes wrote “ When they were finished eating she got up and said, “Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes.
Many have believed that the aspect of a community is the term used for people who live in the same area. In today’s modern world, such as the United States, we are able to see communities that stay away from norms and habits that look beyond the aspects of what tend to be noticeable such as religion, and ethnicity which many base on to make a community. Human-beings incline to classify themselves based upon factors that are likely to be noticeable, and ignore those that truly make one who they are in society, whether it is their philosophy, hobbies and even the classification of being a human. Throughout the world we are able to see communities being built and made based on several factors that have something in common; yet this thing held
On my road, there is this woman that helps homeless people. She takes them into her home, feeds them, and cares for them. She gives them money and sends them on their way. This woman reminds me of the woman in the story Thank you, ma'am, by Langston Hughes. The woman in the story is forgiving I think this because she brings this boy to her house, she feeds him, and gives him money after he tried to steal her bag.
In a story called Thank You M’am, by Langston Hughes, a boy named Roger tries to steal from a woman named Mrs. Jones. Instead of calling the authorities, Mrs. Jones Brings Roger home and begins to care for him and teach him right from wrong. At the end of the story, Mrs. Jones even gave Roger $10 to buy the blue suede shoes he wanted. From this, we can reason that the reason Mrs. Jones took Roger to her house and cared for him is because Mrs. Jones sees something in Roger that she saw in her past self.
What would you do if you caught the person who tried to rob you. In the book Thank You Ma'am written by Langston Hughes that is what happened. I feel like Rodger changed because when she caught him she treated him with kindness. If she would have been cruel and mean he would not have changed I think. You can tell she changed him when he decides not to run away and face what he has done. When she pulls back on her purse Roger falls to the ground. When he does Mrs. Jones picks him up and puts him in a half nelson. She takes him to her house where she tells him to clean his face. He stared at the door thinking if he could run out the door, but he did as she said and washed his face. He asked if she needed anything from
In a world where Hollywood leaps at the chance to adapt a beloved story, the short story “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes’ poignant message about poverty and empathy should be adapted into a film. The film would open with a diegetic, low-key, areal shot of the street at night in soft focus with a single person walking down it, which establishes the time, setting and the ominous and tense atmosphere of the story. The camera will then cut to a headshot of the person, who would later be revealed as Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, and zoom out until the shot becomes medium with a deep-focus. As the camera zooms, it reveals the size of her purse, as well as her colorful clothing, which alludes to her compassion towards the main character,
My people is one of Langston Hughes’ poems which is about working class black African American people. In this poem, he compared the beauty of nature to the beauty of his people. My people is a very short poem, built in three stanzas which consist of two lines in each stanza. This poem was written in simple language, therefore, the readers can easily understand what he is trying to convey. I believe, beneath its simple words, this poem depicts the beauty of working class black African American people that go beyond the beauty of physical appearance.
How would you react if somebody told you that somebody would try and take a personal belonging of yours? Then they told you that they proceeded to give them ten dollars? Something doesn’t seem right. In the short story, “Thank you, M’am” by, Langston Hughes a boy named Roger attempts to rob an old lady of her purse with her personal belongings. in it. He did get caught, however he was taught more a lesson than anything with Mrs Luella Bates Washington Jones. Roger was in a bit of a pickle, because she had taken him in and fed him and washed his face. Late in the night, she gave him ten dollars, for blue suede shoes, what Roger originally wanted the money for. Mrs. Bates changed Roger through kindness. I know this because Mrs. Jones was in
