Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, portrays a recurring theme of revenge. As we know, revenge without a brain can be extremely detrimental, it can turn a person inside out--making them act irrational and do the unthinkable. However, in times of trouble, Hamlet uses his scholarly characteristics of reasoning and logic that he has obtained from Wittenberg University to actively think through situations first, then proceed with his vengeance. Hamlet’s vengeance stems from Claudius for marrying his mother shortly after the death of his father. In Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, Hamlet’s twofold mindset of scholar and warrior both contribute to his decisions; one cannot survive without the other to obtain justice.
Hamlet is made aware of the “most wicked speed” marriage of his mother and Claudius just weeks after the death of his father (1.2.156). Hamlet is perplexed and angry at the fact that everyone is celebrating the new marriage and not mourning the death of the King. Hamlet would like everyone to mourn his father (especially his mother), but Hamlet’s scholar mind knows he cannot speak up so he says to himself, “But break, my heart; for I must hold my tongue” (1.2.159).
Hamlet meets the ghost of his father and he is shaken by what he hears. Hamlet’s father relays to him that Claudius is indeed his murderer. The ghost strictly instructs Hamlet to get revenge on Claudius, not mentioning the correct moment to do it. With Hamlet’s warrior side active, he relays his thoughts that

As represented in many examples throughout literature, revenge is a dangerous desire. Revenge will bring out the worst in people, often causing them to neglect their responsibilities and moral duties. Hamlet, in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, allows his personal passions to interfere with himself and those that are close to him. As a result of Hamlet’s eagerness to avenge his father, he is led to neglect both Ophelia and his mother, disregarding his morals as a person, and revealing that revenge is a destructive ambition to all those that encounter it.
Hamlet has lived through plenty of ups and downs throughout his childhood. He has been lost and confused within himself, but knew he wanted one thing, which was revenge on his fathers killer, Claudius. His passion of hate developed for Claudius as he married Hamlets mother shortly after the king’s death. Hamlet could not decide on the perfect decision for himself, his mother and father as well as the best way to follow through with the best consequence for Claudius that would impress his father. His everyday life, along with his love life, left him with an empty heart, which slowed the process of the revenge down. Hamlet never expected to be captured and kidnapped by pirates, as he was sent overseas as a young man. His inside thoughts were attacking and overwhelming Him, leaving him depressed and anxious. Hamlet’s life has been leading him to negative thoughts that he cannot process or act accordingly to, due to the excessive amount of issues and options involved in his life at a young age, him being overwhelmed lead him to delaying the process of avenging his fathers killer.
“While seeking revenge, dig two graves - one for yourself”, as is what happens to those who take revenge, buried in their own unforgiveness. Francis Bacon’s idea of revenge attempts to bypass this problem of unforgiveness, with the forgiveness of the perpetrator. But not all revenge can be simply forgiven, which is the case in Hamlet; Francis Bacon also knows about this problem, but describes it in his own words with “The most tolerable sort of revenge is for those wrongs which there is no law to remedy; but then let a man take heed the revenge be such as there is no law to punish”(Francis Bacon 15). Revenge is one’s desire to retaliate and get even. Human instincts turn to revenge when loved ones are hurt. But, these misdeeds of taking upon revenge may lead to serious consequences. In William Shakespeare’s tragedy “Hamlet,” Fortinbras, Hamlet, and Laertes’s each show how their desire for revenge unavoidably leads to tragedy. Revenge causes the characters in Hamlet to act blindly through anger and emotion, rather than through reason and morals. Revenge does not only underlie almost every scene, but it has a major effect on the play as a whole. Hamlets father was king married to Queen Gertrude but Hamlet had to return home to attend his funeral. He was a loving son; mourning, only to figure out his mother (the queen) had already married once more. The Queen’s new husband is King Claudius who is Hamlets uncle and the deceased King’s brother. This betrayal was like none other in Hamlet’s eyes. He knew right anyway from a feeling that Claudius was responsible for King Hamlet’s death. Hamlet even worried and sometimes assumed that his mother was part of the planning or even killing of his father. Returning home immediately became about getting revenge on the people that hurt his family and even in some cases that meant his mother. Hamlet was a smart man and very cunning but in the end it doesn’t work out for anyone.
Revenge is a recurring theme in Hamlet. Although Hamlet wants to avenge his father’s death, he is afraid of what would result from this. Not only did Hamlet have to surpass the tragedies life threw at him, but he also had to consider his conflicting views. To begin with, the exploration of human strengths and frailties in Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ provides a strong understanding of the complex nature of revenge, because Hamlet is determined to kill Claudius, which is the main reason for his father’s death.
