Theme Of Jealousy In Othello

Shakespeare often has common themes throughout all of his poems which include love, death, and betrayal. When talking about Othello, all of these major themes are presented. Although, the major theme is jealousy. Throughout the play, jealousy is shown in each character in some way and drives the decisions that they make. The beginning starts with Rodrigo being covetous of Othello for being with Desdemona, and at the end where Othello is envious because he believes Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio. Iago is an important character throughout all of this because he makes up lies and misleads characters into believing things that are untrue. Iago feeds off of Othello’s responses in order to figure out how to make him most jealous with what he says next. An example of this is when Othello asks Iago about seeing Desdemona and Cassio talking alone. Obviously, Cassio is asking her to convince Othello that his incident with Rodrigo was a mistake but with the intention of infidelity already in his head, he believes otherwise. “Was that not Cassio parted from my wife?” questions Othello to Iago, to which Iago responds, “Cassio, my lord? No, sure, I cannot think it, That he would steal away so guilty-like, Seeing your coming.” Othello answers back, “I do believe ‘twas he” (3.3, 37-40). Iago totally disregards the question Othello asks and answers with another question, where Othello then answers his original question eventually coming to his own conclusion of the matter. No matter the situation Othello does nothing but wonder what Cassio and Desdemona’s intentions really are. Iago leads Othello desiring to know more which makes him obsessed with knowing the truth of the accusations. Iago easily persuades Othello to the point where he never actually goes to ask either of the parties involved in the conflict. He believes what Iago says and the “evidence” that is presented to him. This includes Desdemona’s handkerchief being found in Cassio’s bedroom. It is then when Iago succeeds in making Othello jealous to the point where he trusts no one but Iago. Iago brings up
