Equality doesn't always equal happiness. Ayn Rayn used symbolism in her book Anthem to show a deeper meaning on how she feels about collectivism based on how it affected her at the time. Three of of the most important symbols are a simple light bulb, a screaming person, and the Uncharted Forest. This proves that Anthem is classified as a dystopia because each symbol represents the fear and how powerless the people really are in their lives. In Anthem, Equality rediscovers electricity in a light bulb. To Equality the light bulb is everything. It's power, freedom, and most importantly individualism. "We Made It. We Created It. We brought it forth from the night of the ages. we alone. Our hands. Our mind. Ours alone and only. (Rand
Through his work, he discovers a way to harness electricity and make a primitive light bulb. He knows that this discovery with greatly help mankind because a light bulb is more practical than a candle. This, however is not the reasoning behind Equality’s experimentation. Shown in the quote “We shall put before The Home of Scholars the greatest gift ever offered to men. We shall tell them the truth . . . We shall join our hands to theirs, and we shall work together, with the power of the sky, for the glory of mankind.” (Rand 67). In other words, Equality wishes to bring man a grand discovery of his, a discovery that will make everyone’s lives much easier. If you look closely you will find that Equality is very excited to show his invention, but he shows it so that he is a contributing individual. From this we can see that Equality wants only to be an individual, that is his motivation. Also, shown here “This wire is a part of our body, as a vein torn from us, glowing with our blood. Are we proud of this thread of metal, or of our hands which made it, or is there a line to divide these two?” (Rand 61). Rand expresses that Equality’s light bulb is a part of him, he created it for his brothers, but more importantly, he created it for the sake of his own individuality. To sum this up, Equality finds that his invention will benefit mankind
Lionel Messi once said “you have to fight to reach your dream. You have to sacrifice and work hard for it. Equality discovered electricity in Ayn Rand’s book “Anthem”,Just like Prometheus, The god who stole fire, sacrificed a lot to show the world there discoveries. They did not fail at what they created and what they did.Although they had different outcomes equality felt a bond with prometheus, Because of how alike they were and how different they were.
The main character of Anthem, Equality 7-2521, lives in a society that abides by the rules of collectivism. As in “we” never “I”, Equality had to think as a collective group, the greater good for all men. Yet Equality 7-2521 was always different. He had higher intelligence and a better understanding of how things were and how things should be. Throughout Anthem as the story builds, Equality realized that there was something not right in the world. The author, Ayn Rand, writes about Equality’s struggles against the collective as he learns the importance of individualism.
In "Anthem," Equality rebels against the constraints of his society and embraces his individuality, ultimately finding freedom and enlightenment outside the confines of his oppressive world. Equality expressed himself by using the words “I” and “Me” in the later chapters of the book. He breaks free from the “bondage”, “For the coming of that day I shall fight, I and my sons and my chosen friends. For the freedom of man. For his rights.
Equality is much taller and much smarter than his other brothers. He knows that he is different. The first line of “Anthem” which is spoken by Equality states
Anthem is a book I would recommend to friends. Who wouldn't want to read a book with a little bit of romance, free will, rediscoveries, and freedom. In anthem, Ayn describes a frightening future where individuality is wiped of the face of the planet, creativity is shunned, free will is punishable by death, and values are taken away. Even though all these things are forbidden and shunned on by the people in this society there is one soul who has not allowed this restrictive society to tame him, Equality 7-2521. Despite the restrictive world he lives in he has allowed all this forbidden thought to fester in his brain. Equality 7-252 dared to be apart from the crowed ,to finally think for himself, love the women of his own choice, and to want to be
Set in a dystopian society in the future, the novella Anthem written by Ayn Rand is all about being a collective society which doesn’t believe in individualism. Ayn Rand constructs a society in which individualism is a transgression. The government enforces the idea of collectivism to the society. They believe that in the human race each person is not single. The protagonist, Equality 7-2521 wants to be an independent person. He wants to be free. As stated in the novel, “To be free, a man must be free of his brothers.” This statement means that in order to be successful, he has to be his own person. As the novel goes on Equality 7-2521 learns to be an independent man and frees himself from the society which forces collectivism.
Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is a very unique novel. It encircles individualism and makes the reader think of how people can conform to society and do as they are told without knowing the consequences and results of their decisions. Also, it teaches the importance of self expression and the freedom that comes along with being your own person and having the power to choose what path to take in life. Figurative language is used often in this book and in a variety of quotes that have great importance to the theme, plot, and conflict of the novel.
“We were born with a curse” (18). At the beginning of the book Anthem, this quote explains how Equality- 2721 feels about himself. He is describing how he thinks and wishes about things that are forbidden. In the book Anthem, one topic of discussion is technology and science. Technology and science is presumed to be feared in the book and is primitive.
Equality and Socrates underestimate it as as to empower the good. In order for them to acquire knowledge, both men must fight against the regulations of the dystopian society. Both go to the city and they come across with a society they’ve never seen before. In spite of my Anthem literary analysis, on the theme in symbolism of light, Equality has invented the lightbulb, in which he believes that it will benefit mankind. In regards to his invention, he believes that it has also become a part of him. In the novella, Rand states ‘’..We can light our tunnel, and the city, and all the cities of the world with nothing save metal and wires...the power of the sky can be made to do men’s bidding.” Light symbolizes the knowledge Equality gives to his brothers. He believes that his benefit to society will outway the transgression he has committed. Also, he believes that when shows it to the World Council, they will reject Equality’s limits of his new invention. The World of Council rejects his new technology, because they are unfamiliar with it being standardize to its society. A last reason of their rejection to Equality’s creativity would be, because they are unaware of the power it possesses. For the purpose of knowledge, in Anthem, it empowers Equality to leave society and pursue his oath of liberating his brothers and sisters from
“My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose” (Rand, 95). Anthem is written by American author Ayn Rand about Equality 7-2521 on his quest for happiness. The novel is set in an unspecified time and place in the future. Years after human civilization has gone through a deconstruction in which all knowledge was lost and a new society established with no concept of the individual. “The novel describes the efforts of the main character, Equality 7-2521, to reestablish a sense of personal identity and restore the knowledge of the past by objective scientific inquiry. In doing so, he must face many dangers and privations” (Anthem). Anthem is a dairy of the Equality
There has always been a slight anxiety, a slight fear, of being alone or standing alone. Students rarely want to admit to having an answer different from the rest of their classmates; some people do not want to go somewhere and do something by themselves. Notably, with more shy or anxious people, they will often stick around someone they know, so they will not be alone in the crowd. Although that company might help them make it through those nerve-wracking moments, when is the right time for them to walk alone? Should a person ever walk alone? In Ayn Rand’s Anthem, Equality’s internal conflict of conformity versus individuality plays a role that Equality needs to overcome in order to complete their quest for freedom which helps create
But I still wonder how it was possible, in those graceless years of transition, long ago, that men did not see whither they were going, and went on, in blindness and cowardice, to their fate.” Dystopian societies often deal with the lack of importance of Free Will/ Individuality. Individuality is an important concept which was ignored completely in Anthem. Anthem was a novel wrote by Ayn Rand in 1937 to elaborate on the time period which she grew up in. Dystopia is a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease and overcrowding. Dystopian novels usually start out with a perfect society or utopia. However, as the novel progresses, the reader and characters realize that this perfect society is the total opposite. Dystopian
Ayn Rand, the author of Anthem, states, “The mind is an attribute of an individual. There is no such thing as a collective brain.” This statement means Ayn believes highly in individualism. Individualism is a belief in the freedom of action of individuals. Ayn Rand’s theme of individualism is not a sin is developed and supported in many of her works such as Anthem through the characters, Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000, and their actions.
A society where a man’s precedence is to serve only for his brothers. Laws and rules are crafted to prevent promotion of individualism and preserve cruel uniformity under the form of moral virtue. Anthem is a clear depiction of a repressive society in which the word “I” is unheard of, and men belong to the collective word “We”. The norms in the society force agreement and sacrifice among all the people in the society. The idea that,“If you are not needed by your brother men, there is no reason for you to burden the earth with your bodies”(Rand 8), has been pushed into the average mindset of the
