Commentary: Theme and Purpose
Young Goodman Brown is a short story with a hidden meaning. The story shows a strong theme of how the public views a person’s faith. In this story, the characters, actions, and setting all represent public morality and evil.
Goodman Brown is a Puritan who believes in God, but Brown’s faith is tested. Goodman Brown decides to venture into the woods to meet with the devil. As Brown makes this voyage through the woods, trustworthy men from church are discovered. Brown is worried that the minister will see Brown with the devil. Later, Brown discovers that Deacon Gookin and Goody Cloyse are a part of this meeting. Brown then feels more comfortable about joining the congregation.
