The Zookeeper’s Wife is an amazing war story. The 5 artifacts that I am going to be talking about are the most importent to me. The actifacts that I will talk about are Jew stars, zoo animals, piano, nazi sign, and a pig farm. These artifacts are the main part of the story and they also tie in so well. The first artifact I am using is the zoo animals. Antonina the zookeeper’s wife, nurses all of the baby animals she also takes care of the animals that are hurt or sick. Before the war had started the animals were Antonina’s life she guarded them with all her heart. When the war began lots of the animals were killed by bombs that were shot off by Nazi Germany. Other animals were killed by Nazi soldiers because the soldiers thought that the animals …show more content…
In The Zookeeper’s Wife hitler was the president of Germany and so Nazi soldiers were everywhere. The war had already begun and Nazi soldiers were all over the zoo. No one come and visit the zookeeper unless they had permission to go in by the zookeeper. Lots of Jews were keeped downtown because the people thought that they were dangerous. Many Jews died when they were held in a little part of town because they were not fed. The Nazi sign was hung almost everywhere after the war. The third artifact is the Jew star. The Jew star was yellow with the word Jood, Jude, od Juif. The Jews had to have the stars on 24/7 so that the soldiers could tell who was a Jew or not. Juif is judisch in German. In the basement of the zookeeper’s house were the Jews hid in the day they put a Jew star and their names on the walls. The forth artifact from the story is the piano. The piano was used to call the Jews upstairs. The Jews were keped in the basement to hide from the soldiers in the day. After midnight everyday Antonina played the piano so that it was clear to go upstairs. Them they were upstairs they would eat and play. But at sunrise everyone had to go downstairs so that they wouldn’t get
TXT- The installation included art pieces from various artists that were considered corrupted by the public because of its symbolic attributes of German roots, which the Nazis did not approve of and tried to remove every single one
Larson, Erik. In the garden of beasts: love, terror, and an American family in Hitlers Berlin. 375 pages. New York: Crown Publishing Group, 2011.
For my artifact I constructed a document. Documents hold all sorts of information. In this case, these documents were from World War I. Knowing background information about the past is useful especially for World War 2. In this case for World War I, soldiers did not have any background information on wars for the reason that it was the first war to occur. Civilians during World War II, took inspiration and took the mistakes that soldiers messed up in WW1 as an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. In order to not repeat history again. Documents were used in order to keep track of special events that would occur during the time. In this case, this was something that the civilians based off of for World War 2, to know what types of battles
The Holocaust was one of the most horrific events, to ever occur in history. Hitler and the Nazi party started a genocide that killed millions of people because of their ethnicity. The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman tells the perfect story of how life was like during the Holocaust period, through a woman and her family. The main characters in the book are Antonina, the wife and mother, Jan, the husband, and Rys, the couple’s son. The Nazi’s invaded Poland, and took over the Jan and Antonina’s zoo. Throughout the whole novel, Jan and Antonina Zabinski play an active role in the underground network of both hiding Jews and taking care of animals within their Zoo. The main character, Antonina, finds herself managing various relationships during the novel, she’s a zookeeper, a wife, and a mother as well. Throughout the course of the novel, she reveals aspects of her relationship between the animals, and her husband.
The third and final artifact is called a “soow”. Soow in Mien means book. The book is very significant. Among the following artifacts shown, the soow is the most important to any family because it contains the only form of writing that lists all of the ancestors who lived before you. In the book, it is the names of one’s grandfather, and his grandfather, and his grandfather, and so on because the Mien follow the patriarch of the family line. The books are made of old papyrus paper and feel brittle to the touch. The Mien people do not have their own alphabet, there is no ABC’s, no 1,2,3’s, and no Dr. Suess books in
My first artifact is the House of Chan’s menu. I chose this because I love food and the idea of early types of food in the 1800 till now fascinates me mostly its price. The menu was made when the restaurant was built in 1957. The building was founded by Irv Howard and is located at Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue West, which sadly closed, but they built a new one on 514 Eglinton Ave and Penny Lyons later on. The menu show the prices of the food in which they were selling. The prices are so amazing that with just 10$ I can eat my breakfast lunch and dinner and still have some cash left. When the first House of Chan was built it was around the time of the Vietnam War when America was fighting Vietnam to stop communist from spreading. What shock me the most was that even when China were communist people still accept their food and there culture. In one of website that I read Mr. Howard knew how to run a room but with the amount of hate against the war I can’t imagine how he could have run the place. Also during the time rock roll was a popular thing and Elvis Presley the king of rock
The larger panel clearly depicts the symbol of The Star of David on two of the mice. Interestingly, we don’t see any of their faces. This symbolizes that fact that the Nazi’s didn’t see the Jews as people, but as faceless individuals defined by their religion and Star. Therefore, the Nazi’s were able to treat the Jews in such a inhumane way, resulting in the
each Federal agency and each museum which has possession or control over holdings or collections of Native American human remains and associated funerary objects shall compile an inventory of such items and, to the extent possible based on information possessed by such museum or Federal agency, identify the geographical and cultural affiliation of such item (Native 1990).
The second cultural artifact is the poem "Stars Over Dordogne" by Sylvia Plath that was written while she was visiting France in 1960 and was published in 1962. The version of this poem that I am using comes from the Soomo learning resource (Section 2.4.4 Literature Gallery). In this poem Plath compares the dark sky and lonesome stars of her home to the showy and bright sky and stars of Dordogne. The contrasting imagery of the two locations is coupled with the feeling that the artist is using the stars and sky of home to symbolize herself.
A majority of the exhibit was technology based or was made up entirely of dioramas. It was very interesting to discover that the museum uses a mediated based approach to inform their audience of the events that happened during the time of the Holocaust. To heighten the experience, the museum hands out cards with pictures of Jewish people who were affected by the Holocaust. At the end of the tour, there is a scanner that will reveal the fate of the person on your card. I received Peter Freistadt. Peter Freistadt was born on October 13, 1931, in Bratislavia, Czechoslovakia. With the arrival of anti-Semitic laws in the 1940s, him and his family had to wear the Star of David on their sleeves and a brand. The star branded them for all to see that they are jewish. They were required to hire a non-Jewish man to overlook their family owned business. They were forced to leave their home. Peter Freistadt was one of the lucky few to escape the ghettos, and the horrors that followed. There was one section within the exhibit called "The Hall of Testimony". This is where you can hear the stories of Holocaust survivors. This provides live testimony of the events from the period and semi fills the void that was caused due to the previous lack of artifacts. The Museum honors the survivors in a permanent exhibit titled “Witness to Truth”. The
Each three-day break provided a multitude of opportunities for an untethered 19-year-old to exercise his independence, sew some oats and inevitably get into trouble. Combine that with an abundance of alcohol in a country where the drinking age seems to be non-existent, and the mind would provide a scenario designed to test my limits and nothing seemed impossible!
III. State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artifact and the success of the creator in achieving the purpose. For instance, what message do you believe the creator is trying to express, and is that message successfully expressed? [You examined this in 2-3-1 Worksheet: Reasons for Creating Artifacts.]
“[A]nd only God, omnipotent indeed, knew they were mammals of a different breed” –Mayakovsky. The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinsky is a horrific tale of heinous acts against humanity and people in the time of World War II. The tales of humans being eating by rats, and women being rapes, and men having their eyes gauged out are enough to make any person cringe. All of these events are seen through the eyes of a six-year-old unnamed boy as he travels and tries to survive the rugged and ever changing landscape of Eastern Europe during World War II. The horrific events of the holocaust are represented by the use of animal imagery that allows the reader to navigate the relationships between the wrong-doers and the victims.
The City Zoo is a private non-profitable, volunteer and professional service organization, started in 1905 when “Samantha Fresaer donated a hedgehog to the city park” when it was run by the City itself, until the year 1982 the ownership has been transferred to the Zoological Society. Ever since the City Zoological Society took over the leadership the local economy increased and the zoo made almost 8% in local economy for each tax dollar it
