Imagine, if you will, a brisk night wind coming fast across a lake carrying a pungent smell, something you can’t quite identify, but is nonetheless familiar enough to send a shiver up your spine. As it hits the trees, they creak out a somber call in the still night air. Or was that groan something more…human? You notice, for the first time, the absence of tires humming on pavement and you wonder if it’s that late, or maybe just a slow night. The soft tapping of your shoes on the sidewalk is the only accompaniment your slow breathing has as you move towards the warmth of your home, holding thoughts of a warm bed in the palm of your hand to keep the chill away. You don’t notice at first, perhaps because the reality of what you’re hearing is …show more content…
A valuable lesson you hope to pass on to the next late night pedestrian you and your new friends come across; Underestimating the potential for a zombie outbreak is a highly dangerous (and foolish) activity. Preparedness is something one can never have too much of when considering an epidemic of the walking dead. Some of the basics are: Assessing the potential for a zombie outbreak at any given time, knowing the four types of zombies and how to respond to each (an absolute must), and most importantly, you need to have a plan. Step one of the preparation is the easiest: assessing the potential of, and being on the lookout for, a sudden and massive wave of zombification. I know what you must be thinking, “Zombies? No way,” but I beg for your attention on this matter; it could be the difference between life and death and un-death. Ruling out the more extreme, and significantly less likely, possibilities of sorcery and hell reaching its maximum seating capacity, leaves genetic mutation, viral infection, and science gone wrong as candidates. For simplicity’s sake, we can boil these three causes down to a disruption of brain chemistry in one way or another. As far as the possibility of an outbreak goes, in regard to the fundamental corruption of a brain’s chemical equilibrium, the risk is exponential. One piece of Mad Cow grade beef, a corn crop dusted with a carcinogenic pesticide or maybe just a simple radioactive leak into a local water supply and all of a
The terror of death typically consumes people, therefore, they must prepare for anything to happen. Not knowing what to expect can make it difficult to prepare for if the event has yet to happen. People planning to survive the zombie apocalypse must follow the process of gathering weapons, finding the items necessary to survive, and learning to use surrounding items to fight zombies.
The article “The Tragic, Forgotten History of Zombies,” written by Mike Mariani, was published on October 28, 2015. Mike Mariani is a writer in Hoboken, New Jersey with many of his stories published to The Atlantic. Mariani’s main audience is anyone in the general public or any individual that could be lacking information in history of zombies. There have been many myths of zombies. But the oldest ones first appeared in Haiti during the 17th and 18th centuries. This form of zombies is described as slaves that were brought in from Africa and worked to death. Once they were worked to death, this lead to the importation of more. Once a slave was worked to death, they were denounced to the Hispaniola plantations for life. Their bodies had no use
Zombie movies still representing a common fear that impact people around, and even the fear of today’s media. One thing we all realized that over the last decade the modest zombies began to appear in comic books, video games, and television shows that changed the perspective of this phenomenon. It is particularly an infection not a magic spell that was found by a myth, or a superstation, it is basically understand as a disease. As a society we do have a better understanding of disease and infections, which makes zombie the perfect fit in this template to our understanding of their appearance, and make us obsessed with knowing more about their
(QUAD CITIES – 7, November, 2016) Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse is something that everyone should know how to do and Joe Zombie explains just that in his Ded talk at the I-Wireless Center.
Even though they seem unrealistic, zombies can be created and are realistic due to these several things that can happen in the brain that can cause a person to act like a them. Parasites and viruses can cause these things, however, viruses are the closest to realism due to how they can spread. Everything wrong with a zombie is likely caused by their brain because of the way they behave. However to understand all this you need to understand how viruses work.
Imagine watching the news as usual before heading to work one morning. Suddenly, the words “breaking news” flashes on screen. A reporter gives horrific details of a virus that has broken out in the nearest major city, causing people to attack and eat anyone near them. They avoid the words but the unavoidable truth of the matter is on everyone’s minds; the zombie apocalypse has begun. Widespread panic sets in among the neighborhood, and it is apparent no one has a clue as to what to do next. Do not let emotions overrule logic, though, as panic is the quickest killer. Remembering what to do when the outbreak begins, when enduring the dangers of travel, and when seeking out a long-term shelter are the best way to avoid
Survival supplies are the first thing needed to stock up on. The more time spent on planning for when disaster strikes, the better off one will be. There are a few categories of supplies needed to start thinking about and stocking up on; supplies for basic survival and supplies to be able to just get by. Basic survival supplies would be items such as jugs of water, canned food, a sleeping bag, medication, and a bag to carry everything. Stocking up on water could mean the difference between life and death. A zombie may be able to kill you out in the open, but “dehydration can kill you in three hours in harsh environment-snowy days- and after three days you will need water or you will perish” (Binns). Canned goods are processed to be able to retain water, protect against bacteria growing inside of the can ruining the food. Canned goods have a very long shelf life, and eating right out of the can is possible.. These features make canned food great for survivors whom are always on the run with no time so sit down and cook. Sleeping bags are a good on-the-go way to be able to lay insulated and protected, even in the out doors. Many sleeping bags are fiber sacks, which keep warm even in harsh winter weathers. I recommend keeping the bag unzipped incase of the need for quick escape. Although blankets keep you warm in shelter, they won’t be protective in a harsh winter’s storm. Medication: another essential in
When an outbreak first occurs, the most basic rule of thumb that comes to everyone’s mind its materials. Materials can arrange from anything to food, water, and tools. Firstly, water is the most crucial item to stock up on. Water is the main source of life for all humans, without it we can not live. When the outbreak first starts, the water supply is bound to cut off, so gather all the containers including bathtubs, sinks, and boxes. Having enough water will allow a head start on the days to come. Along with water, food is a must. Food is the next lifesource humans need because it gives all the nutrients needed. There is no way to fight off zombies, without the proper nourishment. Food items that are more convenient are the ones that have a long shelf life and do not perish in a couple of days. The convenient food items can arrange from simple items such as grains, canned goods, and handy snack food. Food and water keep the body
Have you ever found yourself lying in bed, awake, with your eyes still closed? You know you’re awake, dreading the day ahead so much, you feel like if you can keep your eyes closed, you can put it off indefinitely. That’s how I feel this morning. Today is one of those days. I have made the decision this is the day I venture out into the world for the first time in seven months. I’m not a shut-in, and I’m not an agoraphobic. I am however afraid of zombies, and zombies are outside.
One may never know, because this is very unlikely to happen. However, after reading the novel, “World War Z,” one may be left with many helpful survival tips. With knowing common zombie knowledge, one may have enough information to outsmart the zombies. If zombies are spreading across one’s town, one will have to take action and not freak out. Overthinking this life threatening situation may leave one dead before they face a zombie. After hearing about the zombies increasing, one should take action, yes zombies are slow, but one will have to remember they are multiplying. Soon it won’t matter if they are slow, when hundreds are surrounding every house in the streets. During a zombie apocalypse you will need to have the right mindset, one will have to be able to kill the living dead. One may not have time to show emotion if a family member has been attacked. If one can out run a zombie and shoot a soulless human in the head, one will survive the
While the idea of zombies or where they were first originated from can be debated by many different countries, several of these myths have reoccurring plots of how humans passed away, and found a way to come back from the dead. No matter what story is being told from around the world about zombies, they all seem to originate from a dark power being used to bring someone back from the dead. Throughout the centuries; however, we have adapted towards our new technology and now many zombie stories include either a deadly virus that escaped from a lab or a biological disease that somehow evolved and helped reanimate people; yet, didn’t completely bring them to life as the functioning citizens they used to be. Although the story of how zombies came to be has changed due to technological advances, in both cases zombies seem to represent a punishment and a plague to the human species and are condemned as evil beings, or ungodly. With increasing popularity in American society, it is evident that the main explanation its popularity are because it depicts survival or an individual or group of individuals, shows a new society that isn’t overly sanitized or censored, gives people with regular lives an opportunity to live vicariously through the characters and furthermore shows that consumerism isn’t a necessity.
Being the logical person that I am, surviving a population growth of zombies at my school would not be a real struggle. Other students my age would not hesitate to either hide in the most sophisticated of places, or run with gusto, and scream with all their might, chainsaw in hand, as they try to defend their fellow classmates. I, on the other hand, would take the better mannered approach. As a teenager, I have been taught all of my life to make new friends, and always be polite. So there would be no hiding for me. Instead, I would be socializing. Zombies aren’t dead and the chances of being killed rather than turned into an undead human by people that you know from school, walking dead or not, are slim. There is no point in living a life as
In the possible occurrence of a zombie apocalypse, certain measures involving shelter, food, weapons, and fitness should be taken to better the chances of survival in such a desperate situation. Throughout the years, movies, television shows, and other miscellaneous hype have heightened a large number of people’s suspicion about the possibility of disease-ridden humans taking over the world. In reality, that atrocity is not exactly far-fetched. With so many vaccines and medicines being mass produced without the sufficient steps taken to test the results, the chance of humans contracting unimaginable side effects is a rational possibility. If
Survival and disaster preparation are relevant in the stories in the novel. Several interviews, especially those from the United States, focus on policy changes designed to train the surviving Americans to fight the zombies and rebuild the country. For example, when cities were made to be as efficient as possible in order to fight the zombies, the art of using real places and locations to describe these disasters, or when the ultra-rich hide in their homes, which had been turned into fortified compounds, they were overwhelmed by others trying to get in, leading to mass slaughter. Throughout the novel, characters demonstrate the physical and mental requirements needed to survive a disaster. There were so many disasters that can be related to the outrageous earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcano eruptions, etc. Zombie apocalypse can most likely be a reality through the spread a deadly virus. Brooks described the large amount of research needed to find optimal methods for fighting a worldwide zombie outbreak.
Intently, we listened to the monotone voice who informatively warned the public to stay away from the zombies, to seek immediate shelter, and to cease using electrical devices. As I looked in the horizon, I saw a sea full of zombies with blood soaked shirts, bits of flesh between their broken, jagged teeth, and emotionless faces with eyes as white as the moon. Survival was key; therefore, I pledged to my family that we would not be transformed into zombies. Consequently, I acquired these life-saving reinforcements, a gun, an abandoned military semi-trailer truck, and a supply of meals ready to eat.
