World Moon Project-Essay #1
For the World Moon Project we were supposed to observe the moon on certain key dates. Each moon observation is in chronological order with the date and is recorded in military time. We observed the moon and recorded our Big 5 data. Our first key date was September 22nd. I recorded my Big 5 data at 1837 or 6:37 pm. The shape that I seen was a banana. It was on the right side from about 1 o'clock to about 5 o'clock. The direction that the moon was located at that time was 250 degrees Southwest and the angle was 34 degrees.
Our second key date was on September 26th. The time that I saw the moon was 1942 or in regular time is 7:42 pm. To me it looked like a curved semi-circle that was slightly tilted to the right.
In the year 1908, what is today the sprawling suburb of Robinson Township was nothing more than a farming community. Moon Run, a community in the township, was a prosperous mining community that was built by the Pittsburgh Coal Company. Today, nothing except the Interstate 79 exit sign, Moon Run Road, and Moon Run Presbyterian Church acknowledges the name of this small community by the highway interchange. The workers in these mines were Catholic and Presbyterian, and both denominations needed a house of worship. The Roman Catholic workers were about to establish a parish that has become an icon of Robinson Township for almost one hundred and ten years.
1. The significance to the story of Miss Johnson and the detailed description of her appearance is that Miss Johnson was the young boy’s chance to get away from isolation and get a chance to fit in with society. To the narrator, Miss Johnson represents some sort of freedom, that which makes one feel accepted and welcomed by everyone, and Miss Johnson makes the young boy feel that. All the boys like Miss Johnson, including the young boy which gives the feeling that he’s fitting in with society and is being accepted as an equal to everyone else.
between light and shadow) from the north pole to the south pole of the moon. This is how the moon would be seen if it were on the observer’s meridian. We can use the drawing above to determine the amount of illumination and whether it is on the left or right hand side of the moon. Use the drawing above to draw the appearance of the moon in the box below.
Is there a dark side of the moon? (Note: this question can be effectively answered either yes or no, so it is important to explain your reasoning.) Some people refer to the side of the moon that we never see from Earth as the dark side. However, this is inaccurate since the far side is not always dark. For example, during the new moon, when the side facing Earth is completely dark, the other side of the moon is facing the sun, so it is in full sunlight. Since the Moon rotates at the same time it takes to orbit Earth, both sides of the
Charlotte "Lottie" Digges Moon was born in 1840; she was the third child for her parents and had four sisters and two brothers. Her father, Edward Moon was the largest slave holder in Albemarle County; and was also a merchant and a lay preacher in the Baptist church. Her father was the owner of a fifteen-hundred-acre tobacco plantation known as “Viewmont”. As a young girl growing up Lottie was known for her astuteness and mischievous behavior. While living at home she studied with tutors, and in 1857 she went on to further her education at Albermarle Female Institute.
Over the course of the book What the Moon Saw by Laura Resau, Clara transforms as a result of finding herself and her true calling, healing. Towards the beginning of the book, when Clara feels like a “fuzzy moon, just a faint light through the clouds” and questions if she is more than just a little plastic doll after seeing a little doll resembling her in a model of her neighborhood (3). After hearing Abuelita’s story she wonders if her soul is what differentiates her from the plastic doll and why in the past year, she hadn't felt like herself. Later, she explored the forest and “pictured (her) life as a big forest. Up until a couple of days ago, (she’d) only lived in one little clump of trees.
My grandfather was a grocer for 20 years. He first worked at a local grocery store, bagging bags, then he opened his own called Village Grocer, next to a golf course. But the most successful one by far was Prospect Grocery, or “Moons”. With lines around the store during breakfast, lunch, mid afternoon, and night Moons was a thriving family owned sandwich shop and grocery. With my grandmother paying bills and taxes in the back, my grandfather, Julius Daniel Rowe was making sandwiches, cashing payrolls, preparing the soup and cleaning the tables. My mom, aunt, and uncle, also had a play in the business. They all cleaned the tables, waited, and took orders. My grandmother's
If you notice in all the pictures that NASA has taken of the first moon landing, there are no stars in the sky. In July of 1969, many Americans
The moon is by far the biggest and most easily recognizable object in earth’s atmosphere that can be perceived by the naked eye on a cloudless night. It is hypothesized that it came into existence nearly 4.5 billion years ago, from residual debris after a planetary body collided with earth. Although, considered the runner-up to the sun as the second brightest object in the sky, its illumination is deceitful, insomuch as the moon is not a source of light, but instead reflects the sun’s illumination from the half of the moon that is in direct alignment with the sun at that time. More readily identified as a satellite of the earth rather than as a planet itself or even a star, it has a diameter a quarter of the size of earth’s size and it
Kelly, Rotton, and Culver report that Caton examined 45,000,000 births and found a weak peak around the third quarter phase of the Moon, while the full moon and new moon phases had an average or slightly below average birth rate.In 1959 Walter and Abraham Menaker reported that a study of over 510,000 births in New York City showed a 1 percent increase in births in the two weeks after full moon. In 1967 Walter Menaker studied another 500,000 births in New York City, and this time he found a 1 percent increase in births in the two-week period centered on the full moon. In 1973 M. Osley, D. Summerville, and L. B. Borst studied another 500,000 births in New York City, and they reported a 1 percent increase in births before the full moon. In 1957 Rippmann analyzed 9,551 births in Danville, PA and found no correlation between the birth rate and the phase of the moon.A fifteen month study in Jacksonville, Florida also revealed at least no lunar effect on crime and hospital room admittance. In particular:There was no increase in crime on full moons, according to a statistical analysis by the Jacksonville Police Department. Five of the fifteen full moons had a higher than average rate of crime while ten full moons had a lower than average rate. The
Perkins makes frequent use of contrast to explore ideas in One Night The Moon. Discuss.
The "Moon Hoax" has been around since 1835, when the New York Sun printed an article about this whole ordeal. The New York Sun used and credited Sir John Herschel, who was a British Astronomer. Herschel claimed that he had tried out a new type of telescope on the Cape of Good Hope in January of 1834. While in Cape Town, he said he'd set up an Observatory. Using this, he claimed to have observed what he thought of as the "Real" Moon. He claimed to have seen vegetation, bodies of water, and living creatures. He also said he had seen "Bat People" who were described as being furry winged men. This took the People at a shock, and the "Evidence" and science astounded them. So many began to believe this is true.
In the poem ‘Moon’, Kathleen Jamie explores themes of abandonment, loneliness and disconnection. She does this by utilizing a clearly dysfunctional relationship between a mother and child. The child replaces the either mentally or physically absent mother with the presence of the moon. To explore the emotional distance between child and mother, the author uses dark and light imagery to empathize the child’s loneliness and to evoke the scene of a parent visiting they child late at night. Personification of inanimate objects illustrates the detrimental effects the unavailable mother has on the child’s mental wellbeing. The poem ends with dialogue from the protagonist, the child, pointing out that the moon is not her mother, as if to be
There is a lot of vocabulary words that confounded me, for example, tranquility, op-ed, lament, perennial, mundane, indignation, and viable. What I myself gained after reading the critique stemmed from Charles Krauthammer’s “The Moon We Left Behind”, just how he strived towards comparing space travel programs to the importance of spending the countries valuable tax dollars on social, educational, and crime. The key concept that I for one, can explain if I had an 8-year-old sister/brother stands in place as in life, sometimes your opinions are not always accurate and it will be up to you to show evidence. In addition, the economy today will try to knock you down, but it’s important to stay true to your values and do your best at improving your
