The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell focuses on the puritan colonies in the new world. Mainly Plymouth in 1620 and Salem in1692. The book focuses on the words of John Cotton and John Winthrop’s sermons. The book provides an insight into the forming of these first few colonies, such as the events both in Europe and the new world that led to there formation. Vowell does a great job at keeping this historical analysis as interesting as possible referring past events to present day ones giving a younger reader a better understanding. I found her writing on the famous Indian Squanto to be particularly interesting. Squanto was the famous Native American who helped the first settlers of the Mayflower. He was the only Native American who could speak English do to the fact he was kidnapped my European sailors early in his …show more content…
As mention before Squanto was captured be European sailors who brought over disease. This disease had wiped out all the people Squanto knew. When he was returned home he found his friends and family were all dead and his village was gone. When the Mayflower came over it settled on the very place Squanto’s old village sat. The land being destroyed by disease was cleared and perfect fro starting a colony on. The settlers most likely found Squanto here because it was his village and all that he knew. Another point I found interesting is the line from John Cotton that America was blessed by God and therefore needs to share this blessing with the world. This is first seen in the Massachusetts Bay Colony Seal which shows a Native America saying, “Come over and help us.” It seems as American people thought that this gift or blessing from God needed to be shared with everyone and occurs multiple times throughout the book. It occurs in the seal, The Mexican War, Vietnam, Wounded Knee, and Cuba. Each of these events goes back to the idea of America Spreading its
The east coast of North America was conolized by Englishmen of similar race, however by the time of 1700 they had flourished into two contrasting societies. One of the main motives for this difference was that New England and Chesapeake were founded for different purpose and under different climate. New England was founded mostly for religious reasons. Puritans that were persecuted in England wanted a “New England” and to escape the religious struggle they faced.
In the 16th century into the early 17th centuries, there was a rapid spread of various European nations who occupied the new American lands. Before they set out on ships to occupy, kings would send people to explore the treasuries and worth of North America’s coast. Before settling, there were already two different colonies who existed which were the New England and Chesapeake colonies. Although the New England and the Chesapeake colonies are massively different from each other, there are also many similarities that readers can compare such as their economy, geography, and religious characteristics.
According to paragraph 1-4, there were many things that describe the war that causes all the religious problems and also how they have in the common people over the 17th century and also know that the puritans have many advantages to opposed the king and represent the church of England over the civil war that was broke out and didn't challenge the slavery over everyone regardless to the race and how many things also led of the unity of the colonies from the separations of the colonies. As also know there were many colonies that become very important and that were also providing many things from other parts as tobacco, and other many things. The colonial also was develop as they had an economic that was using to slave the trade that
*The ideology that inspired Josiah Strong's passage is the idea of America's "Manifest Destiny" which many christians in the United states believed in. This is the idea that the United States is the superior country that has a duty to God to spread its christianity to other "savage" people and countries. This was also the belief that America needed to help the other countries who cannot help themselves and cannot successfully self govern. Americans used this "destiny" to justify seizures of other countries. They also used this ideology as an excuse to conquer the west and push away the native americans.
Bradford helped organize the Mayflower voyage in 1620, which about 100 people joined to separate from The Church of England. “Of Plymouth Plantation” was written by Bradford in which he described the journey to the “New World” and some aspects of the Pilgrim’s life. William Bradford’s purpose of writing this historical account (“Of Plymouth Plantation”) was to inform readers of the future generations that would come to the New World about the hardships the Pilgrims had to endure, so generations to come would not have to go through the same sufferings; Bradford expresses fear/distrust and civility of his fellow Pilgrims through the use of tone.
After reading the editorial “Ship of Fools” the author gives multiple reasons that support her claim, that letting Abby sail solo around the world was foolish and dangerous. One of the reasons is how the author stated how much work and effort was put into saving Abby when her boat was hit by the rogue wave. But she also talked about the amount of money that was wasted in saving her because all of this could have been prevented if her parents said no and didn’t let her. Another reason that the author brought up is that sometimes when you're a parent you’re going to have to be protective, especially in these types of situations. She even gave an example of how she gets nervous when her own 5-year-old daughter goes on the monkey bars. The last
But ever since she started writing most of her stories were based on The Lewis and Clark Exposition that happened in 1803-1806. Her very first book she wrote was first released in Minnesota called Betrayed. In all of her books she has written they have all been about Indians and her culture because she wants more people to know that you can be anybody you want and not feel bad about it or self-conscious . She always tries to ryhm in her books with poetry because she likes the poems. In August 2011 “The Christmas Coat” was the first hardcover book to ever come out all over the world, that book was written on her ancestors. If you read her books most of them talk about the different types of religions and how they are all important. When her daughter had a daughter she had just figured she would start writing little kid books too because they would understand it better. Virginia has painted all the covers to her books since she even started writing books. www.wordpress.com http://freshfiction.com
Mayflower: A story of Courage, Community, and War is the book I read Written by Nathaniel Philbrick. The book speaks about two events the first half of the book speaks about the mayflower voyage about what happened during the voyage, as well as it talks about how the puritans settled in the Plymouth colony. While the other half of the book talks about the arguments and conflicts, they had the pilgrims with the Indian and how that led to the war known as the King Philip’s War. The pilgrims left England to search for religious freedom. The book describes what happened in the first fifty-years of the pilgrims life living in the New World. As the pilgrims were living in the New world they had Several Encounters with the English and Native
The modern image of the New England Puritans, as one perceives, is a dark one: the Puritans, religious dissenters who valued propriety and order, are seen as a witch-hunters, suspicious tribe, and their very name carries connotations of grimness and primness. Where as the book “A Little Commonwealth” reflects the scenario in which the Puritans lived.
The Shipman’s Tale, one of the many tales in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, is exactly suited to the Shipman’s personality and profession as given in “The Prologue.” The shipman is described by Chaucer in the prologue as very sneaky, deceitful, and even pirate-like. The Shipman’s tale matches his personality and profession because The Shipman’s Tale is one of trickery and con. The monk in the tale tricks both the merchant and the merchant’s wife out of their money. He also uses his relationship with the merchant to his advantage, because he knows the merchant would never suspect him of having sex with his wife. The shipman is also portrayed in the prologue to have no sense of remorse or feelings of sorrow.

In 1629, the Massachusetts Bay Company gathered a royal charter to settle a new Puritan colony in New England. After losing patience with the english government and Charles the first for their dislike of the puritan group, they did not fight fire with fire so they left to North America after hearing the group found a new colony in New England. This would give them the ability to practice their beliefs without persecution. As they ventured to the new colony, John Winthrop wrote a necessary sermon, “A Model of Christian Charity” where he and his other founders kept record of hoping to achieve a community remaining sole devoted to God, that stay true to Calvinism and who are united as a group.
The colonial period is abundant in its sources of people who influence and help to be American literature. The colonial period is from 1600 to 1750 and it began with the Puritans arriving at cape cod on the Mayflower and Speedwell. The Puritans came to America because they wanted to separate from the Anglican church. The Puritans believed that God should be the leader of the church, not the priest. There are also other differences that cause the Puritans to leave such as writing style. The Puritans writing style was called plain style and its writing is inspired by the Geneva Bible; the Anglican read from the King James Bible and is far more complex and complicated than the Geneva Bible which is more straightforward. Plain style contains biblical allusions, double synonyms, and puritan double vision. Works that are written in plain style are: “Of Plymouth Plantation” by William Bradford, and “ Narrative of her captivity” by Mary Rowlandson. The writing style of the Anglicans is called high style and it includes metaphors, satire, Greek and Roman allusions, and conceit. A story that is written in high style is “ The history of the dividing line” by William Byrd. The Puritans and Anglican were also different in the ways they would live their lives. The Puritans see anything that took their attention away from god as a temptation of the devil. But the Anglicans like to enjoy the things of beauty in the world, things like art, literature, and music. Also, the Puritans believed
Contrary to popular belief and the amount of information distributed in history textbooks the English colony at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620 was not the first permanent colony established by the English (Loewen 72). In May 1607, 105 men, plus the crew of the ships, came ashore on the banks of the James River in what is now known as the Commonwealth of Virginia to settle what was to be known as Jamestown (Dabney 1-5). These settlers came to the New World aboard the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery (Dabney 1). In
Based on the Puritans, the novel criticizes their beliefs and strict society. They are commonly thought of as the founders of America, but Hawthorne puts them in a very negative light. Despite initially settling in the New World in 1620, the Puritans still had a large population into Hawthorne’s time growing up, impacting is view of them in a negative way.
