In his translation of Black Skin, White Masks, Richard writes that the white man is considered superior because he is the inventor of technology. He has invented the compass and gunpowder. The Negro has never known even how to subdue electricity or steam. He has neither explored the seas nor the sky. They only know all the nooks of crannies of the country of suffering. The white man has many great things to his name. What can the Negro boast about? The Negro cannot claim anything. As such, he is inferior. His voyages have been uprooting. They have become flexible to kneeling. They have been domesticated, Christianized and inoculated with bastardization. These things have made the black man a bitter man. The “new” negro no longer embodied “old” characteristics that defined a black man. Society had always taught a black man how to act; however, now he was adapting to the world. Locke declared that ‘the Old Negro’ had long become more of a myth than a man” (Locke, 1). A furthered and detailed definition of an “Old Negro” was that he “was a creature of moral debating historical controversy” (Locke, 1). The four

Richard did not understand until later that the black community discouraged his rebellious ways because following the expectations of whites was a way to ensure survival of the community. A rebellious act of one black not only put his or her life in danger, but also his or her family and the entire black community. Richard’s need to conform to the rules of the white society for survival and his need to rebel in order to achieve his humanity and individuality was a tension that infested him daily.
In the midst of a long passage on black people in his Notes on the State of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson (who sniffed that [Phyllis] Wheatley’s poetry was “below the dignity of criticism”) proposed that black inferiority- “in the endowment of both body and mind”- might be an unchangeable law of nature. (181)
“These words sank deep into my heart, stirred up sentiments within that lay slumbering, and called into existence an entirely new train of thought. It was a new and special revelation, explaining dark mysterious things, with which my youthful understanding had struggled, but struggled in vain. I now understood what had been to me a most perplexing difficulty – to wit, the white man’s power to enslave black men. It was a grand achievement, and I prized it highly. From that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom” (20).
As a book that focuses on early America from both the white and the black perspective, the authors’ purpose is rather quite different than that of others writing the same type of book. They are not writing this so that people in the modern era feel sorry and ashamed of how black people were treated when this country originated but rather will see that there was equality and black people were able to succeed just as much as—sometimes even more than—their white equals. Many books have been written that make everyone feel like we are to blame for modern day racism, but the authors are here to argue against that and show that there was equality in early America.
Nigger: The Challenges of Educating Black Males Within American Society,” Jenkins’, in focusing on social disadvantages of Black males, credits “a history of oppression” for the social and academic challenges Black males are faced with (p. 144). Jenkins often speaks of the unequal and unjust treatment by the educational system; explaining that Black males are not receiving and adequate education in American society. Though he has provided several historical facts, there seemed to be a lack of information relating to Black males in today’s society. Jenkins points out, “With regard to the student, he brings with him to the class room… a history of oppression that has affected his family unit, a life of poverty or some form of economic struggle…racial frustration…inadequately educated parents… and esteem issues…with his first engagement in society (p.144). It seems as though Jenkins over uses the term “oppression”, when “racism” would be a more accurate fit. I do not completely agree with Jenkins’ outlook stating oppression is a factor in the social or educational challenges Black males face. Cruel or unjust treatment by the government, educational system, or American society as a whole is not legally or socially acceptable and does not exist in today’s society; although, I can understand how a parent or elder who did in fact experience oppression of Black males in their lifetime could pass on negative experiences and beliefs to the younger
Once they have stopped you from thinking and asking questions, and once they have made your life bitter, then American slavery has done its perfect work.” This shows how African Americans weren’t equal to the white because even after being brought to America as slaves, the white treat them even poorly such as whipping them and hurting them so much that they can not even speak for themselves anymore. “What I told you is what your grandparents tried to tell me: that this is your country, that this is your world, that this is your body, and you must find some way to live within the all of it.” (Coates). This powerful quote exemplifies the mistreatment of blacks in America as something that has been prevalent throughout our nation’s history and is still present in our contemporary world. Our national founding document promised that “All men are created equal”. As a nation we have never achieved the goal of equality largely because of the institution of slavery and its continuing repercussions on American society.

And when I brooded upon the cultural barrenness of black life, I wondered if clean, positive tenderness, love, honor, loyalty, and the capacity to remember were native with man. I asked myself if these human qualities were not fostered, won, struggled and suffered for, preserved in ritual from one generation to another." “Uncle Tom’s Cabin has a chapter dedicated to white trash, I did not buy the book yet, which addressed the differences between the north and south, how the slaves, free black people, and whites viewed them, and how many looked down on black people because they wanted someone lower than them (Stowe, 1854).” “T. Wise asked what stereotype is working against me as a white person (Mann, 2013).”
The woman who raised and loved him did not know him any longer. This is one of many instances that illustrates the white society’s “lack of mercy and compassion” (22). Malcolm X blames whites for robbing his mother’s dignity, for separating his siblings, and for “disintegrating” his home and unity. Therefore, Malcolm X states he has no compassion for “a white society that will crush people” (22). The word “crushed” imparts the same horror he feels on the audience to illuminate the extremity of racism so that the audience can sympathize with his reasoned anger. Being called the ‘n-word’ in his life is another factor in Malcolm X’s belief that white society is demeaning to blacks. When Malcolm X told his English teacher that he wanted to be a lawyer, she replied, “That’s no realistic goal for a n-word” (118). The teacher’s statement is a clear portrayal of the widely accepted sentiment in that time period that African Americans are too incompetent to have good jobs and have ambitions. As a result, this incident deeply affected Malcolm X and has contributed to his disapproval of blacks being servile in a white society. Malcolm X appeals to the audience 's sense of horror and hatred by sharing his experiences in order for paint a more illuminated picture of racism.
The dominant white male of the story speaks the following statement, "Now I like the colored people, and sympathize with all this reasonable aspirations; but you and I both know, John, that in this country the Negro must remain subordinate and can never expect to be equal of white men" (373). This is a fundamental sentiment that white people in the American society during that time held on to. In this essay W.E.B DuBois shows how this black man, John, was treated in his hometown after returning home with a college education. Both blacks and whites reject his new views. However, to whites the black John represents a devaluing of the college education. If a black person can have a college degree, then having a college degree must not have value. After this reaction from society John started to think, "John Jones, you're a natural born fool" (369). This behavior from society kept the average black person stagnant, and unmotivated.
