World War II would shape the minds of a countless number of individuals whether they knew it or not. While war itself is horrible there are times where people feel that they have no other choice but to fight in one. WWII became one of those wars. The war was necessary and worth fighting at the time due to the aggressive nature of the German and Japanese cultures. However at the same time the war would produce a greater number of problems throughout the post war years with the invention of the bomb and Soviet tensions. Ultimately it appears as though Terkel takes a similar stance.
WWII was a war that to some countries was necessary to fight in though for others it could be argued that it was not necessary. For example, the British and French felt they had no choice but to go to war due to the close proximity both were to an extremely aggressive Germany that it seemed would eventually point there eye towards both countries. On the other hand it could be argued that it was not necessary for the United States, who had an entire ocean buffer between itself and Europe, to get involved in the war in Europe. At the point when America would get involved in the war in Europe, Britain’s as well as Russia’s survival were all but guaranteed with the continuation of American Industrial support (Stoler, 24). With this comes a dilemma. The war in this event could have ended in a stalemate. Every country in Europe would have been weakened, however Germany would likely have ultimately have
Lastly, The United States should of joined the World War II because we were attacked after we were trying to stay out of the war. The United States only option was to enter World War because Pearl Harbor was an unprovoked terrorist attack. Also, America had to respond and defend itself. Hitler was also posing a threat to the safety of the entire world. If the United States had not counterattacked Japan, we would have looked weak for the world because we didn't defend ourselves.
War is a conflict that destroys countries, lives, and alliances. The occurrence of the Second World War was a lesson unlearned, it happened despite the fact that the First World War had caused so many casualties and hardships to countless countries and families. After WW2 had started, the United States of America decided to stay neutral based on how they were trying to get out of previous economic troubles from the Great Depression and the World War I. United States foreign policy allowed us to supply to the Allies while still remaining neutral, however, our oil embargos on the Japanese prompted their attack on Pearl Harbor. America’s outrage over this infamous event brought us into the Second World War with all our might and anger. America’s
The battle of World War II was a very difficult thing to go through. “World War II began on September 1, 1939, when 1.5 million German troops invaded Poland.”(World War II) World War II made people leave their families and go fight. It also got countries involved that originally weren’t and don’t need to be involved. There were allies and there were Axis powers, allies helped other people and then there were countries that just kept attacking others.(World War II) The war kept causing more damage and harm but didn’t force countries to join. “The number of countries participating in the war on either side increased over the course of the next two years to include virtually all the countries of the world.”(Canada Enters World War II)
World War II-- also known as The Holocaust / The Genocide -- was the world 's second 'Great War '. World War II was much more larger in scale and more longer in duration. World War I had only lasted for four years, while World War II had lasted for six years. I find it quite interesting that contrary to popular belief; the United States did not enter World War II until 2 years after the genesis of the conflict. It was only in 1941, when the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor that the United States had entered the war. World War II started in 1939 due to Germany performing an unprovoked attack on Poland. Surprisingly, only a few months later after Germany invaded Poland; the whole European continent was at war. In 1939, the United States was not ready to go to war. In the early 20th century, the United States Army only ranked 39th in the world. Many Americans believed that the United States could not handle another global conflict right after the Great Depression. Although the United States was not 'officially ' part of the war at that time, that did not stop the United States from becoming 'unofficially ' involved.
World War II, intensified tensions between two of the strongest countries in the 1940s, the United States of America and Japan. On December 7,1941, Japanese planes and submarines attacked the American Naval base at pearl harbor, one of America’s largest bases and the largest base in the Pacific Ocean. The attack caused serious damage to the base, taking out America’s strongest battleships, killing thousands of people, and destroying hundreds of planes. America officially enters World War II. The Battle of Midway was a crucial battle in a long line of other battles fought for dominance in the Pacific Ocean. The Battle of Midway was a turning point in World War II. It was the first decisive American victory and provided a morale boost for American troops after the Pearl Harbor attack.
Even after the United States decided isolationism, they could not stay away from the conflict. For one, they understood Great Britain needed help. Second, they tried to keep diplomatic relations with Germany even after they killed Americans aboard civilians’ cargo ships with their U-boats. Furthermore they kept diplomatic
Helga Arthur was born January 16,1943 right in the middle of the second World War II in Berlin Germany. When I was interviewing Helga she discussed how her parents were originally from Estonia and had lost everything which lead them to fled to Germany. But then Germany became unsafe when her father hear the communist were moving in and that there was the potential for Germany to be divided between the U.S , Britain and Russian. So Helga’s father got them forged german red cross papers and they escaped in the middle of the night through farm lands and keep going in the directions of where the Americans were. There was a tremendous amount of hunger along the way and the farmers that didn 't really want to help the people escaping the city because they did not want to get in trouble but Helga informed me that they could not say no to a hunger child so her parents and her got sheltering along their journey. After a perilous trip they mange to get themselves to Hesse Germany where there was a big American base. Helga mentioned at this time that her parents were both university educated and spoke multiple languages which was very good because her father ended up going to work for the American army and they hired him because he spoke English, Russian, Estonian, German, and a little bit of French which allowed him to support his family. The American soldiers were also extremely good to Helga’s family in terms of her father was able to bring home extra food at night which
To What Extent was the Battle of Stalingrad a More Important Turning Point in World War II than the Battle of Britain?
On December 7, 1941, the fate of the United States of America changed forever. At the time, the global conflict known as World War II had been brutally raging on for over two years. American forces had managed to stay out of the war. However, when the Japanese bombed the naval base in Hawaii, at Pearl Harbor, the Americans could no longer hold out. On December 7, 1941, the United States of America entered WWII (“Origins of the Normandy Landing”).
A soldier in World War II is on the battlefield fighting for his country. Suddenly he is captured and finds himself in a strange place. He realizes he is in now a prisoner of war camp in a foreign country, and he prays he is treated well and gets to go back home soon. World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945 and involved countries such as America, Germany, Japan, and Italy, just to name a few. There were millions of casualties, and every involved country suffered a loss. The Geneva Convention of 1929 set the standard for captured prisoner treatment; American camps took pride in following the Convention’s rules, but German camps, specifically Camp Berga, cut corners on inmate conditions.
“When the war began, the United States had entered a period of isolationism. Americans viewed the conflict as Europe’s problem and wished to keep it that way. However, as the situation in Europe grew increasingly overwhelming, the United States began to slowly edge towards going to war.” The final point, of course was the surprise
The Battle of Midway was one of the most important naval battles of WWII. This three day offensive between June 4th and 7th of 1942 inflicted irreparable damage on the Japanese fleet. The Japanese sought to eliminate the America as a strategic power in the Pacific, thereby giving Japan a free lane to establish a greater dominance on the Pacific hemisphere. The plan was faulty from the start due to American code breakers who were able to decipher the date and location of the attack, forewarning the U.S. Navy to set up its own ambush. After midway and the lost of the Soloman Islands, Japans shipbuilding and pilot training programs were unable to keep pace in replacing their losses while the U.S steadily increased its output in both areas due to the increased women labor force.
The United States has been involved in many conflicts, but the World Wars are two of the major conflicts, which many people lost their lives. World War II, being the more recent war, is the war that the United States should have entered earlier than they have. The World Wars are two of the most violent wars we have had in the world, but World War II, was by far, the more hurtful war out of the two. World War II has violated many human rights, and has produced many social injustices to the people who have suffered during this war. Millions of people could have been saved from the Nazi’s lust for purity if the United States would have entered the war earlier than they have.
The brutality that came with the onset of the Second World War, was that that was unseen by the world in the centuries before. World War Two became one of the defining moments in the 20th century. The scale of the war and the atrocities that came with the desire for the absolute destruction of the enemy was, and will have an effect on the peoples of the world for many years in the future. The Holocaust did not arise through deliberate planning set out right from the time that the NSDAP came into power in 1933. This essay contends to prove that the ‘Final Solution’ arose though the nature of the Second World War, and evolved from previous plans of deportation and exclusion from the 3rd Reich. The official policy statements from 1933-1939,
Weapons have always been a critical factor in warfare, but in the 20th century, they became even more important and destructive, such that the world started to create new and unimaginable weapons, like war tanks.
