We are a culture of our own”. That is the opening statement of Alan Downs’ nonfiction biography, “The Velvet Rage: Overcoming the Pain of Growing up Gay in a Straight Man’s World”. Alan Downs is a Psychologist that specializes in the troubles and concerns of gay men all over the country. In writing his self- help manual, “The Velvet Rage”, he gathers research and stories from his anonymous patients and shares them with the world. Though he respectfully keeps the identity of his patients anonymous, it is easy to become emotionally attached to the sad stories of the struggles and obstacles that most gay men go through. Alan Downs opens his book with five coming out stories from his patients that explain the difficulties that gay men face when trying to obtain a happy and fulfilled life. Throughout this section of the novel, Downs introduces the reader to how unique the situations of the beginning stages of life can be for each gay man. Downs
