The book starts off with the antagonist, Valentine, tricking a warlock into summoning a powerful demon named Agramon. Agramon kills the warlock but is told that he needs to follow Valentines orders because he poses the mortal cup. At the institute, which is where all the shadowhunters live, Alec and Isabelle’s mother returns, not believing Jace didn’t know Valentine was his father. This makes Jace upset so he leaves, going to a bar. In the bar Jace picks a fight with all the werewolves there. Luke Garroway, the leader of the pack and Clary’s step dad breaks up the fight and Clary has to go talk to Jace. The Inquisitor then comes and sends Jace to prison for one night in the Silent City and on the same night Valentine and Agramon kill all the Silent Brothers …show more content…

The demon attacks have been increasing and Clary discovers her power, which is to create runes, which are magic spells and are drawn on with a wand like stick). The rune she creates is a fearless rune which makes people fearless. The fight goes on and Valentine captures Simon and Maia, a werewolf, so he can complete his ritual. The Inquisitor then imprisons Jace and tries to trade Valentine for the Mortal Instruments. If he will not trade then she will kill him. Jace tries to say that is a bad idea but she won’t see reason, blinded by her believe that Valentine is responsible for her son’s death. Alec helps Jace break out and Jace jumps out of the cage, gets some weapons, then escapes the Institute getting a ride from Luke. Now everyone knows Valentine is the main enemy and stop fighting amongst themselves. Jace gets the fearless rune and then gets captured. The shadowhunters attack the boat that Valentine is on and they then learn Simon was killed. Jace kills the fear demon on the boat, using the fearless rune to beat the fear demon, and he finds simon’s body, letting simon suck his blood reviving
