Sara Richards Professor Phil 305 Intro: With the world’s population continuing to increase, the demand for food is higher than ever. A growing population means more demand on food. “The world population will rise to 9.3 billion in 2050 and surpass 10 billion by the end of this century.” (Sanyal) This should say something about our growing population that is still continuing to grow to this day. This increase in food demand also calls for more efficient ways of growing and providing food without causing any damage to our environment or our health. Two methods that can be effective for this demand are the organic and conventional method. Decision: Its unethical for conventional farmers to use of pesticides and growth hormone to multiply their products faster and bigger than organic farmers. Meanwhile while these conventional farmers make millions in their products, millions of people are deprived from a healthy diet by choosing to support organic farmers. The reason against the Claim: The influence conventional farmers have on consumers. While many people want to support the organic method because of its known benefits but they also feel that it is just another way to cheat consumers out of their money. However, studies have proven that conventional fruits, vegetables, and even drinks are cheaper than organic. The potato is one such example. Because of the fast growing rates and high crop yield due to the use of pesticides and other unnatural components, this allows the firm to sell the plant at low costs to maximize on their marginal cost (the benefit of producing or selling one more unit of output). If a firm in a completely fair competitive market desires to make money, they will sell more units at a lower cost, so long as the number of units doesn't incur a negative marginal cost.
It has been argued that organic are worthwhile because of nutrition. In paragraph 21, David Lazarus, stated, “What you’re paying for, presumably, is a more healthful diet. That means produce that hasn’t been drenched in pesticides, chicken and beef that hasn’t been pumped full of antibiotics, milk with even more nutritional value.” However, organic food is not worthwhile because of nutrition. “A 2012 study found no real difference between organic and conventional food in terms of nutrition. The sales of organic food increased by about twenty percent a year throughout the nineteen nineties (Marcus). That is over ten times the rate of increase that conventional food experienced during the same period of time (Harris). As recently as twenty eleven, about seventy-eight percent of American families admitted to routinely purchasing organic food (Organic). Organic food sales jumped from three point five million in nineteen ninety-seven, to thirty-one million in twenty eleven (Organic). However, while organic food may seem better than conventional food, numerous studies have shown that it is not distinguishably more healthful, nutritious, palatable, or safe.

Over the next forty years, global population is expected to reach nine billion people. This increase in population, combined with expected economic growth, will cause an increase in food demanded and inevitably drain the resources we use for food production. So far, agriculture has been able to respond positively to the rising demand for crop and livestock products. However, farmers are already faced with many new challenges associated with feeding an expanding global population. Farmers must now meet strict new emissions requirements and produce more food on fewer acres while minimizing their environmental footprint. The demand for food is expected to grow substantially in the next couple decades. Some of the factors affecting an increase in food demands are population growth, rising incomes of individuals, food supply factors, and biofuels.
