The topic my op-ed will discuss is the under-representation of women at the political level in Canada, although it is a prevalent topic in many other countries as well. The title of the op-ed will be: The Underlying Reasons for the Lack of Female Politicians. The thesis of the op-ed argues: while women represent half of the population in Canada, only a quarter of the seats in the House of Commons are represented by women due to the various types of discrimination they face because of their gender.
The first premise of the op-ed will be to show that social inequality continues to exist in the form of the gender wage gap. Secondly, negative media portrayal contributes to the lack of support for female politicians. Both of …show more content…

The evidence presented throughout this journal is crucial for my op-ed since it helps to prove that social inequality continues to effect women based on historically traditional gender roles. These factors contribute to the gender wage gap, which consequently causes lack of female political participation. This article has been published by a trustworthy institution and provides a long list of references in its bibliography to other notable works with their own credibility. It is also the work of respected authors who factor in the use of the Michigan Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) data to strengthen the research method of their article.
