During this Lecture, the UC Merced Hip Hop Movement group educated us about the history of hip hop and what it is, and what it has evolved to. Hip Hop is a way of expression. The four pillars of hip hop are graffiti, Dj, Mci-ing/ spoken word, and dance. Hip hop first started out as just break dancing in the 1960s in Bronx, New York by immigrants. During the financial frustrations of WW II, immigrants used break dancing, as an outlet and form of expression. Break dancing can be so intense that it can be a battle of dance between two dancers. It can be a way to settle arguments. Later on, the Jamaican tradition of “impromptu toasting/boasting through rhythmic poetry over/with the music developed into “rapping” a.k.a. “Mc-ing.” (Movement) Dj-ing
The hip-hop culture began in the streets of New York City during the 1970’s and has gone through tremendous changes up until now. Hip-Hop consists of four elements: rap, graffiti, break-dancing, and the disc jockey. In this paper, I intend to fully explain the evolution of rap music, from its infancy to the giant industry it is today.
This paper traces the roots of Hip Hop culture, particularly focusing on the form of dance known as Bboying, Bgirling or Breakin'. This dance form is also known as breakdancing in general. It does this by conducting interviews on pioneers and practitioners of breakin', while analyzing some previous research at the same time. By doing so, the paper attempts to achieve three goals:
Hip-hop music in today’s world has grown immensely in the past 20 years, first spreading throughout America and now to parts of Europe and Asia. However, this change was indeed a gradual one. What began as a simple expression of dissatisfaction of inner city life has turned into a multimillion dollar industry and thriving culture, with some of its leading artists being people of all walks of life. It began around the 1970’s and 80’s as a means of overcoming the struggles of urban life in the Bronx, New York City. More so than just music, Hip-Hop is a culture with five elements or “pillars” all of which are essential to what is the Hip-Hop “lifestyle”.
Nearly four decades later hip-hop’s ever evolving dance moves progressed without missing a single beat. Originating from African-American and Puerto Rican poverty-stricken youth and young adults in the Bronx, New York in 1973, (Chang 67) it was a direct result of overflowing creativity, suppressed energy, and a lack of available outlets. Serving as a medium to empower the youth opportunity to express his or her emotions through the four hip-hop elements, however, I would like to focus towards the element of dance, how it started, what happened, where it is today, and the language that’s spoken to the people through the art of dance.
The notion of the authenticity in hip-hop is that it has to do with being associated to “the street” or the urban ghetto. “The core of Hip Hop cultural activity”, a “site of originality, culture, perception, and cognizance” (Alim 2004a: 390– 91). Furthermore, The expression “keepin’ it real” is almost a repetition in Hip Hop insisting individuals to be true to their roots, and not to “front” or make-believe something they are not (Rickford and Rickford 2000: 23). Hip Hop is apparently a multiracial and multicultural movement, yet its roots and artistic strength and most of its well-known rap artists, come primarily from urban African American communities (Blake 1993). In 1999, it was dubbed “the most important musical genre in America” by the New York Times (Strauss 1999: 28), and has debatably been one of the foremost youth cultures in the United States since the early 1990s. Despite the multi-ethnic nature of the founding community of hip hop, young African American working-class, urban males emerged as the art’s central representatives. However, the centrality of African Americans in articulations of authentic, hip hop has roots that are more diasporic than popularity professed. Hip hop

As discoursed in lectures, preceding literary collections, and films, hip-hop is beyond just ‘rap’: it is a philosophy with a history determined by countless inspirational and influential themes and communities. The term ‘hip-hop’ was said to have been produced by Keith Cowboy, a rapper within Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and the subculture apart from this genre of music was said to have been first established through Zulu Nation and Afrika Bambaataa. By now, it is understood that the elements of rapping or ‘signifying’ were primarily developed by African Americans in West Africa and that the music and culture was brought to America around the 1970s. It was at this time that block parties befell admired in New York City, and

With a rich history of over 40 years, including numerous pioneers such as DJ Kool Herc, DJ Afrika Bambaataa and B-boy Ken Swift fronting the image of the hip hop culture, it is not tough for one to gain insider knowledge on the cultural movement and understand what Hip Hop music is and how it has impacted the world even till this day.
