The Tragic Heroine: The Role Of Feminine

Larissa Taylor takes her readers on a journey through the life of the infamous Joan of Arc. Joan can be easily recognized as a historical figure in the 15th century, a female warrior, and a woman that was fiercely independent and determined. Joan’s life has been told again and again, which has slowly taken away from the incredible woman that held so many triumphs. Instead of giving her readers a list of Joan’s accomplishments, Taylor enthralls the reader by detailing every step of Joan’s life, start to finish, so that one can really understand the life of the warrior.

The novel, The invisible hero by Elizabeth Fensham explores the theme of heroism and villainy. Heroism can be defined as doing a selfless act in hope of inspiring others. Villainy can be defined as an act of doing something ‘evil’ in spite of another person or group. although it is commonly known that heroes and villains are polar opposite it is much more complex because it all depends on perspective. This idea of heroism and villainy will be expressed through an analysis of the style, characters, setting and plot.

Memories are important, they are a personal record of our past experiences, and could be called the history book for our life. In the poem "The Heroes You Had as a Girl", author Bronwen Wallace tells the story of a woman who meets her high school hero later in her life, reflects on her memories of him, and ultimately decides not to talk to him. The effect that this topic has on everyone is the knowledge that we can be captivated and let our memories control us, and by knowing that our memories hold that much power, it may make it more mentally efficient to make accurate, and personal decisions in a fraction of the time. The topic and overall meaning that this idea holds convey a message that resonates with the idea that memories are in fact the central hub of our decision making. People remembering memories can affect their perspective on their lives to such an extent, that they prefer to immerse their mind in their past memories rather than the current reality.

Women were expected to conform to the expectations of society, and were seen as possessions by their fathers and husbands. In Romeo and Juliet, the unfair treatment of women is conveyed through characters such as Juliet, a young girl who is growing up within the expectations of society, and Lady Capulet, who represents a traditional side of love, and values social position rather than men themselves.

In a cast of over 30 characters, there are only two women. This is a statement describing the world renown play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. These two female characters are Calpurnia, the wife of Julius Ceasar, and Portia, the wife of Marcus Brutus. Other than these two women, the cast is composed entirely of male characters. In a work of literature so populated by men, one may ask why Shakespeare takes the time to include any women at all. However, after further reflection, it is clear to see the reason as to why they are included. The book includes several first person interviews and discusses the Second Wave of feminism. It introduces the idea of the sexulization of women being used in consumerism and the lack of sexual education in school during the time. The Feminine Mystique is a useful resource because it is considered the groundbreaking book about feminism and lists issues that women have had to deal with from the 1960s until now. The book could be used to argue the struggles that women have faced and continue to face.

A subtopic worth further exploration within The Inferno is the depiction and representation of women. The Inferno mentions very few women throughout, and that makes it all the more salient to analyze the presence of these feminine characters for the fact that they are female carries more weight within the context of the poem than what they say alone. Dante lived in an era when women did not occupy influential roles in the public realm, and were actually discouraged from engaging in intellectual or philosophical debate. Women were not allowed to take part in political discourse nor communicate through the medium of poetry. For the exclusion of women from the historical and literary western canon, Dante’s perception of women in The Divine Comedy can be seen as an underlying framework for further discussion about the consideration of women. What makes Dante’s dialogue even more germane is his use of women from both pagan and Christian epochs, endowed with key virtues of salvation, but closely linked to secular goals (Glenn, xiii-xiv).

In Western genre, women are repeatedly portrayed as either the helpless damsel in distress or the wild saloon girl. Most Western movies have elements of a gunfight,rivalry, redemption, and/or romance written into the script. It is their choices that lead to the pain and death of the people around them. Through an examination of the evidence from three separate works, Antigone, The Bacchae, and The Medea, the role of women in ancient Greek tragedy becomes clear. The actions of Agave, Antigone, and Medea repeatedly prove their characters instability and danger.

The objectification of female suffering is a common theme among plays. While female suffering serves to represent an aesthetic purpose in tragedies and dramas, this leads to female characters being objectified. Shakespeare brings out the absurdity of female objectification for aesthetic purposes in his play Titus Andronicus through the suffering of Lavinia as her pain is equated to scenes of nature, despite being brutally raped and mutilated. While in the Metamorphoses, Ovid uses female suffering as an aesthetic tool in stories like “Io and Jove” and “Apollo and Daphne” to further the beauty in the myths. Overall, Shakespeare critiques Ovid’s use of the aesthetic prerogative to represent female suffering through themes of nature by highlighting the absurd juxtapositions between the two.

The women in Shakespear's play: Twelfth Night, are all depicted as having power, comedic and being very emotional.

For example, Larry chose Suzanne out of all the women in the bar. As he was seen looking from woman to woman, but stopped and smiled at Suzanne as soon as he saw her. She is also desired by the TV guy when he is presenting his speech he is seen stopping and admiring Suzanne, and later rubbing her leg under the table. She is also the key desire of James, who kills her husband for her and takes the blame. Given that, Suzanne uses her looks (sexuality) to gain the attention and control of men seen within the film. She uses sex and love to gain the influence of men, and get them to do whatever she wants (dirty work). In fact, she gets the attention of James and then has sex with him in order to win his love and get him to murder Larry. She is able to manipulate men, and get them to do anything she wants. She recognizes the function that women serve in narrative and exploits it to disguise her own plotting (Week Ten Recap: The Femme Fatale).
