1. Define mass communication.
According to the textbook, mass communication is “communication to a large group or groups of people that remain largely unknown to the sender of the message.” To go into more details, we communicate every single day, but normally to just one or two people that we happen to know. When it comes to mass communication, we could be speaking to the world or the public about an issue that we would like to address. For instance, when we go on social media, or watch the news, that would be an example of mass communication because it is speaking to a large number of audience instead of directly to just one person. It is making a message to a group of people.
2. Define convergence.
According to the textbook, convergence is “the coming together of computing, telecommunications, and media in a digital environment.” There are three different types of convergence and they all have some differences to the way certain things come together in computing in telecommunications and media in a digital environment. Even though there are three different types of convergence, they all play a very important role in mass communications. The three different types of convergence work well by themselves, but if they work together, they build a stronger impact in the media.
3. Explain the three types of convergence
The three types of convergence are Technological Convergence, Economic Convergence, and Cultural Convergence. Technological Convergence
The term media convergence with regards to technology is defined as a process of combining together the telecommunications and computers and turning them into one electronic or digital form. The media convergence has affected our everyday life as we know it in many ways, you can now watch television shows, listen to music and shop online using your computer all without leaving the privacy of your home. Using the computer you can also communicate using the email, or chat option on the

Mass media is communication that reaches a large audience. This includes television, advertisement, the Internet, newspapers, and so on. Mass media is a significant effect in modern culture in America. It creates ideas and sustained within society not only send ideological messages out to the public but to advertise this ideas which are tend to manipulate our mantalities.
Media convergence is the merging of all the technology together. A merger of mass media. It affects us in many ways such as fax machines and e-mail. We as humans no longer have to hand write a letter any more when we have e-mail. We went from writing letters by hand to typing them on a type writer to writing an e-mail on computers to texting on phones. With the simple click of a button the letter is sent through millions of power lines to get to the person it is intended for. Media convergence is a link between old and new technologies. They come together to share the same tasks and resources.

Convergence is when a medium makes a leap in technology. For example, the song, “Video Killed the Radio Star,” by The Buggles, was MTV’s first music video aired by the network as part of their niche -- transcending what was played on the radio to a new form of a medium; video. Even though the network MTV in its inception was not successful at first, it changed the music industry from lyrics and melody to the visualization realm. This jump in technology started off as an emergence; solving of technology to finding a tribal audience; young people. Even though, MTV’s main audience was towards a younger audience, there was something missing, they were not getting the ratings they anticipated.

The convergence phase has had a huge impact on popular culture. Basically it gives more power to the consumers. Whatever is the medium, be it Television, film, books, games or music, what convergence resulted in is providing a platform for media giants like YouTube, Faceook, Amazon, Netflix, I-Tunes, Bittorrent to explore and bring to market unlimited opportunities for consumers to access media through many channels including peer to peer networks (P2P), CDs and DVDs. Thus the word is now used in conjunction with journalism and media to help us understand how the Internet and broadband wireless devices have shifted control from the source to the receiver (Wilkinson, n.d.).
First of what is Digital media convergence? It can be simplified as several processes, these are technological, social, industrial and cultural convergence. It also means the digitizing of old media so it can be incorporated into new media.
The mass media refers to means of communicating with large numbers of people without direct personal contract. The mass media is a major source of information and ideas. Theses can shape people’s attitudes and so some degree directs their behaviour. Mass media in this modern time industrial society is a powerful instrument of social control.
The theory of Media Convergence posits that new technologies bring together different mediums and consequently redefine the media environment. According to the theory, changes in communications and information technologies reshape and change everyday life, altering patterns of creation, consumption, learning, and interpersonal interaction. New technology redefines media content and alters human interaction with social institutions such as government, education, and commerce.
Mass society theory is an idea that media has strong influence towards people, it plays a role of shaping people’s mind and perception of the social world and it is also to manipulate people’s action with delicate, subtle and effective ways (Baran and Davis 2006, p.43). Mass society theory has first introduced in the nineteenth century when there are disruptive consequences caused by modernization (Baran and Davis 2006, p.52). At that time, mass media considered as a cause of social problems (Baran and Davis 2006, p.52). That was the yellow journalism era for mass newspapers (Baran and Davis 2006, p.52). Mass Communication is the study of how people receive information through what is known as Mass Media to a large crowd of the population at the same time. Or they can also say that Mass Communication is a process of which a person, group of people, or an organization send and receive messages through a channel of communication to a large of unknown and heterogeneous people and organizations. You can think of a large group of unknown and heterogeneous people as either the general public. The sender of the message is usually a professional communicator that often represents an organization.
