The Thief Theme

Commentary: Death is an omniscient narrator. He switches between many of the characters in the book. He describes many of the characters feelings, emotions, and thoughts throughout the story.

Markus Zusak, the author of The Book Thief, displays several ways to help readers analyze the story. He uses diction, imagery, details, language, and syntax which allows his audience to master the content in the story.

The book Hunter in the Dark written by Monica Hughes was a story about tragic accident that happened to a boy that took him by surprise causing his life to change. This book being published in 1982 reflects on the style used, as well as being written in a genre of a young adult literature. This book was published being a Canadian book but reached out across many countries.

In the book, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie Zamperini was majorly obsessed with vengeance throughout the end of the book that his life was consumed by the quest for it. Louie felt as if the Bird had stolen his dignity at the POW campsites, where he was beaten, humiliated, starved, and stripped of his powers of self-defense. Louie was overwhelmed with his anger that the only objective he sought was to get revenge on the Bird. In other words, Louie was angered about his loss of dignity at the POW campsite, he wanted to get revenge on the Bird by killing him, and how Louie eventually forgives the Bird for what he did to him. These three reasons show how Louie’s loss of self-dignity in the POW camp was pursued.

There have been many stories written about gruesome battles and heroic feats, but there are few that center around a carton of a dozen eggs. City of Thieves by David Benioff is a tale about how two lone characters are thrown together to achieve an incredible feat. By themselves, the two men would have had no chance whatsoever of completing the task set before them, but together they form a much stronger bond, a friendship of sorts, and are able to overcome hardship and grow personally. By starting out needing each other just to survive a friendship soon blossoms and becomes one of the most recurring themes throughout the book.

Liam O’Flaherty’s realistic fiction story, “The Sniper,” takes place in Dublin, Ireland during a civil war. In the story, a Republican Sniper is stuck on a roof with enemy snipers surrounding him. He shoots two enemies down before he is shot in the arm causing his rifle to brake. Now he must find a way to make a hard shot in order to kill the enemy with just a revolver and a hurt arm. By using word choice and sensory details O’Flaherty demonstrates the theme that actions have serious repercussions.

The Once and Future King was an interesting book to say the least. There were many themes I noticed throughout the novel. Each book in the novel told of a different theme, which gave the novel its appeal. The Once and Future King has many themes that all come together to tell of a great tale.

In the novel The book Thief, Markus Zusak explores that death and war are often more difficult for those who survive. At the center of the text is the idea that those who are left behind after tragedy suffer greatly. This is revealed through the hardship of life and experience a gentle transition. This was shown as an experience of Liesel who struggles as well as the other characters that have difficult processing their grief and guilt. Zusak’s novel acts to alert his readers the dangers of war and by the hardship of life and experience a gentle transition.

The Book Thief is set in the time of World War 2 where the Holocaust is present and disaster is everywhere. Throughout the story, Liesel, the main character, learns that words are extremely powerful and hold the ability for people to use them for good or for evil. Among the disaster and altercations, Liesel uses her literature to comfort her and make herself more powerful due to her knowledge, which demonstrates the theme of the story, the comfort and power of literature and words softens the pain of loss.

The film, Crazy Stupid Love starts off right away with Emily telling Cal that she wants a divorce. Feeling rather depressed, Cal turns to the bar scene to find some comfort and someone to listen to his sorrowful life story. Jacob, an expert on how to talk to and pick up women, feels sorry for Cal and decides to help him rediscover his manhood. Through doing this, Cal gains all sorts of confidence that he never knew he had, but also realizes that he misses his wife as well. There are a couple other sub-plots within the main storyline of the movie, and all of them have one thing in common, love. Love is the undisputed underlying theme of the movie. Prejudice can manifest itself in many different ways, sometimes in the least likely of them. We often assume that the people we place our trust and faith in are free of prejudice, but this is not always true. We can observe this in real life and literature, as seen through the short story “The Stolen Party” by Liliana Heker. This story, about a young girl learning to understand the nature of prejudice and trust, introduces an important theme; that when we encounter prejudice, we should fight for what we believe. This theme is explored through Rosaura’s interaction with her mother, Luciana’s cousin and Senora Ines. These three characters lead Rosaura to question her beliefs, but nonetheless encourage her to to challenge any prejudice directed

The theme of my mandala is Biblical. The leaves represent the Garden of Eden, and the many triangles represent the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost). This says a lot about me as a person, as I was raised in a family with very strong Christian beliefs. I grew up going to church every Sunday, and prayed regularly. To this day I am a very strong Christian and volunteer throughout my church. I help with VBS, run the sound system during the worship service, and am the Sunday School secretary. Church has always been an important part of my life and will continue to be as I age. I find the Bible to be very fascinating, and incorporated parts of it into my mandala.

The novella The Atonement by Ian McEwan produces a reoccurring theme of lost innocence. The children in the novella lose their childhood innocence after one wrongful accusation which tears the Tallis family apart. The setting in the novella develops the mood to be light and airy as the Tallis family resides in the English countryside. Nonetheless, the light and airy mood changes to one that is dark and full of mystery as the Second World War starts. Each character is tested by themselves and others to see if they can keep their innocence. But, each child grows further away from their childhood selves as their lies and misdeeds grow. With the use of literally devices McEwan shows how the loss of childhood innocence is harmful. The
