Gabriel Thompson The Thief Lord By Cornelia Funke It is a chilly afternoon in Venice when Vector, the detective, gets a brand new case. It is not a normal case, however. Vector has not dealt with this kind of case before. He is introduced to it by two middle aged rich people who say they have lost their adopted sons. After some thought, Vector sets out to find them. Suddenly, after a point of view switch, we are slung into the perspective of two children named Prosper and Bo who, after running away, have found their home in a theater called the Star Palace which is owned by Scipio, the Thief Lord. Hartleb and Mr Hartleb- two mean people who made Prosper and Bo want to run away by separating the two brothers from each other. Mr Massimo- Scipio’s rich father Setting: This book is set in Venice in around the 1900s Theme: This book’s theme is that you should not hide the truth from someone if you love them because it will eventually bite you in the rear. Irony: it is ironic that Scipio says he is such a good thief but is very sloppy in his work Imagery: The whole book is set in Venice and the author paints a big image of its great architecture. This gives off a mood of adventure and mystery. The author also describes the Star Palace and its harsh conditions for living. Symbolism: The great lions scattered around Venice symbolised Venice as a city ripe with enchantment and wonder. Foreshadowing:The book foreshadows a great plot twist by mentioning that the children had never seen the thief steal
