Turn Of The Screw and psychological Illnesses In Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw the governess, who is hired to care for two young children, exhibits signs of mental illness as she tends to the estate, the servants, and her own sexual frustration. During the story she claims to see Peter Quint and Miss Jessel, who had close ties with Flora and Miles. The governess shows great benevolence and protection over the niece and nephew. She also displays great loneliness and in return she may be fantasizing these characters. To have the feeling that she is protecting the two children and being able to put her focus on something specific to stay occupied. In the end of the story the governess has an incident when she discovers that Flora is missing as she was distracted by Miles hidden ability to sing and play the piano. She is certain that Miss Jessel has convinced Flora to leave and that the two are together. In a panic the governess and Mrs. Grose head to the lake in which the governess is positive they are at. When they arrive at the lake they don't at first see Flora only to go to the opposite side. They find Flora with no clear sign of Miss Jessel. The governess pledges that she is can see Miss Jessel across the lake. Mrs. Grose and Flora act as if the governess is mad they cannot see the woman in which she is talking about. The next day Mrs. grose informs the governess that Flora has become very ill and in return they are going to head to London to meet with the uncle and the governess agrees that this is the best thing for Flora. During a connection over “Though I've renounced all claim to your company-you're so beyond me- I at least greatly enjoy it” (81). The governess expresses that she loves his company and he is the reason she has stayed in Bly. During the dinner the governess is taken back by Peter Quint looking in on her and Miles through the window. In an over protective manner she grabs Miles and pulls him in close to her. In the midst of the action Miles feels the urge to confess that he stole the governess letter. Miles asks the governess is he here and screams “Peter Quint You Devil!”(86). Directly after the young Miles heart is found to have stopped in the governess arms. In her attempt to protect miles she held him to tight.
