The main conflict in the story, Farewell to Manzanar, the external conflict begins with one provocation: the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Sunday, December 7, 1941. This kind of conflict happens between the protagonist and society. On this day, Papa and his crew are headed out on a commercial fishing trip. Jeanne, her mother and the other woman wave goodbye from shore, and bid them safe travels. Though before the boat can disappear into the horizon, it is turned around under suspicion of providing oil to Japanese submarines. A passerby alerts them of the harbor's attack. Just days later Papa is detained, and Jeanne's internal conflict begins.

Historians have learned a great deal about the Crusades from chroniclers like William of Tyre and Ibn al-Qalanisi. Today, reporters and newscasters travel all over the world to report on international events, including conflicts. Reporters and world leaders use social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook to connect with the public. Imagine what we might know had there been access to television, cell phones, and social media in the 13th century.

All stories have at least one of three different kinds of conflict, man versus man, man versus nature, and man versus himself. Some stories, like Richard Connell's “"The Most Dangerous Game"”, use all three conflicts uniquely and clearly. When each conflict is put to a test of strength in the story, man vs man is the strongest. The weakest is man vs himself. And the final conflict is man vs nature. The three conflicts are used evenly so they end up being as significant as each other.

The Treaty between the United States of America and the Navajo Tribe of Indians was signed in New Mexico in May of 1868. The Treaty is also known as The Treaty of Bosque Redondo and was set forth to help create peace between the settlers and the native people.

The conflict is introduced by means of a complication that sets in motion the rising action, usually toward a climax and eventual resolution" (Charters 1782).

When thinking about relevant theories to the Native American conflict, there are a few that can be applied in a few different ways to help explain the various aspects of this conflict. Three of the theories discussed in this course – primordialist theory, social construction theory, and psychological theories - contain aspects that are applicable to this Native American conflict, while other theories do a poor job of explaining the conflict. On the other hand, one theory from this course – instrumentalism – is not useful in explaining the conflict.

Intra-cultural relations are historically filled with conflict; and to deal with this conflict: Gloria Anzaldua’s concepts of opposing cultures and language barriers, John Locke’s Equality theory, and Kwame Anthony Appiah’s global citizenship theory explores the issue and works towards better relations. According to Anzaldua, people are not of one culture, but in several cases, several clashing, distinct cultures. Anzaldua argues that language is part of our identity, and it is a barrier between cultures, sometimes even our own. While Locke argues, we are all created equal, we may not be treated equal. Once society can deal with these problems, it can move forward towards Kwame Anthony Appiah’s global citizenship theory.

The company Enron was formed in 1985 after two natural gas companies, Houston Natural Gas and InterNorth merged together. Kenneth Lay, former chief executive officer of Houston Natural Gas was named CEO of Enron and a year later, Lay was assigned to the chairman of Enron. A few years later, Enron launched a website to allow customers to buy stock for Enron, making it the largest business site in the world. The growth of Enron was rapid; it was even named seventh largest company on the Fortune 500 list; however things began to fall apart in 2001. (News, 2006). In the third quarter of that same year, Enron posted an enormous loss of over $600 million in four years. This is one of the reasons why one of the top executive resigned even though he had only after six months on the job. Their stock prices fell dramatically. Eventually, Enron filed for bankruptcy protection. This caused many investors to lose money they had invested in the company and employees to lose their jobs and their investments, including their retirement funds. The filing of bankruptcy and the resignation of one of the top executives, also led to an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Committee, which proved to be one of the biggest scandals in U.S. history. (News, 2006). All former senior executives stood trial for their illegal practices.

With a lot of character, there are quite a number of conflicts happened inside the movie. The first kind is the man against himself conflict. This kind of conflict can be seen from the argument between Benjamin and Gabriel that resulted in Benjamin questioning his own resolves. Benjamin also had the same kind of conflict when he was devastated by the death of Gabriel.
