In the book when Milkman meets Circe, she tells him of his parents, the identity of his nameless mother, his father’s and aunt’s childhood, and the general location of the cave. Guitar’s names represent things he could not have and altogether a somber life. Guitar’s name represents the guitar that he could only admire but not have. “ ‘ Where did you ever see a guitar’? ( Milkman talking to Guitar) ‘ It was a contest. … I saw it when my mother took me downtown with her. I was just a baby. … I cried for it, they said. And always asked about it.’ ” ( Morrison p.
Guitar acts as Milkman's best friend, even though they both have completely different beliefs and ideas. Despite being Milkman’s friend, Guitar shows both the better and worse sides of Milkman, being a supporting character that is used to build up Milkman’s character, such as the name Guitar suggests. All famous musicians don’t just use a single guitar to write songs, they’re normally paired up with other instruments, vocalists, or even another guitar. Guitars are made to support music, and even tho they can have their own solo, it’s not the main attraction. MIlkman is the main attraction and Guitar is his influential sidekick. Not only is his name shows his supportive role, but it also shows how opposite of Milkman he is; Milkmen are boring,
Everyday people say the names of objects and others and never think about the meaning behind the name. Names have a sense of power to them, however, the meaning the behind the name gives information to an object or character. Character names in novels especially can give information without stating many clues about the person. In Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book, he uses Nobody Owens, Scarlett Amber, and Jack Frost and the Jacks of all Trade names to provide essential information to the novel.
In Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, characters in the books have interesting and unusual names. But all of these names mean more than what they may seem on the surface. Some of them are based off of biblical stories, some are based on stories explained in the book itself, but they all have something in common: these names all tell a story about the character whose name it is. Milkman’s name reflects his childish characteristics. Pilate and Hagar’s biblical names are linked to not only biblical stories but also paint pictures about their actions in the story. In Song of Solomon, character names reveal or are representative of important characteristics about people in the book in differing ways.
Two of the most widely studied ancient works are Homer’s Odyssey and the book of Genesis from the Bible. Each of these texts provides a unique viewpoint of an early civilization. In both of the texts, one can learn not only stories about great heroes, but also about the way that these peoples lived and what they believed. Many interesting parallels can be drawn between the two developing societies shown in the Odyssey and the book of Genesis. One parallel is the importance placed on names by each culture. Although viewed as important in different ways, the value placed on a name shows a striking similarity between the evolving cultures of both the Greeks and the Hebrews.
If Pilate was the contributing factor in guiding Milkman to flight, Guitar Baines is the leading antagonist in manipulating Milkman and hindering his growth. Hence the name, Guitar exploits Milkman through his longstanding friendship with him, proving to be the main factor stemming
In 1964, when Springsteen was fifteen years old, his mother bought him his first guitar for eighteen dollars. Bruce said that this did not go over well at all with his father, seeing as how he did not approve of his musical ambitions. Young Springsteen went on to say (according to biography.com) “There were two things that were unpopular in my house; one was me and the other was my guitar.” Springsteen later realized how important it was for him to have the fraught relationship with his father that he had. All of his music would have of been happy music if it wasn’t for what he went through with his father growing up and that would not have been good because it was his “darker” side of him and his music that everybody
Throughout The Iliad and The Odyssey, Homer’s use of the epithet in describing Odysseus becomes essential as a means of characterizing the hero. Homer uses several epithets, or nicknames, along with the name “Odysseus” as the story unfolds in both tales. Three of these include the descriptive epithet “wily Odysseus,” the laudative epithet “Odysseus, the great tactician,” and the patronymic epithet “Odysseus Laertiades.” Besides their obvious descriptive qualities, each of these epithets function to amplify, enhance, or characterize the hero.
The electric guitar may be one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. Although the car, cell phone and personal computer have more of an impact on our day to day lives, the music created by the electric guitar has touched the lives of countless millions and has been the instrument of choice for more than 60 years of pop music. While other instruments have played their part in the formation of the modern rock group, the guitar remains the iconic symbol of the genre. Clapton, Page, Hendrix, Berry; the list of seminal guitarists could fill volumes, but the purpose here is not to write about the players. Our purpose rather is to write about the history of the electric guitar, and to highlight the innovators and inventors who shepherded its development.
As I walked into the music store I was overwhelmed with joy. Looking at every instrument I wish i could have. When out of the corner of my eye, I see it. A cherry red acoustic fender guitar. The light shined off of its mahogany wood as if the heavens themselves sent it from above. I brought it down from the wall and held it tight. It was lighter than I thought it would be. The body was smooth as glass, with no sharp

I’m so excited, it’s finally time! I’m changing my strings, and I must say, it’s about time. I love this feeling, the feeling of a new pair of wires. The way the Roadies tighten it is unlike anything else. I feel so fresh, so new. Jimi practically shredded me the other day, making me due for new strings. Nonetheless, I’ve got my strings and I’m a new man now, and I can only think about the show to come, and boy oh boy is it ever going to be a show. Not only is Pete’s [Townsend’s] guitar here, but so is the Fool [Eric Clapton’s guitar]. I’ve only heard stories about him; stories about how he can effortlessly enchant and entertain his audience, all without breaking a string. Yet they haven’t heard me yet, they think they’re so incredible, HA,
Weather it be Coke and Pepsi, Mac and Windows, or Nike and Adidas, for every successful brand in the world, there is always another equally popular one in existence whose presence divides the human race. This seemingly natural rise of rivalry has found its place in the vast world of music, in particular, the electric guitar. Behold Fender and Gibson. Two brands that have blown the competition out of the water for more than half a century and become something much more than just a brand. Unlike other corporations, these two guitars have earned the respect and praise of the public; their dual monopoly is seen not as a negative, but as an opportunity to provide the world with cheap, yet powerful and beautiful instruments. And while guitarists
The significance of Guitar’s name is important because its helps show the conflict of African Americans in that time period because of their inability to have some of the things a white person could easily get. Specifically certain perks that they get to have, in this case a guitar. Guitar got his name not because he was a very good player because he didn't even own, but because when he saw it in a store and cried so much to have it. However he never did but proceeded to carry on the name with him. This is significant to the novel because Guitar first crying as a child to have a nice brand new guitar helps show how black americans at the time we’re not able to have the same things as white people. While this shows a more financial way of showing
Sweet’s guitar how racism determined how people lived in that time, and the career choices they made “Since he could become none of these things he turned to fishing as his only earnest career and playing the guitar as his only claim to doing anything extraordinarily well.” (Walker) The guitar was the only way Mr. Sweet could express himself and feel like he was actually doing something that a really wanted. Also, in the story the narrator sees the guitar as part of Mr. Sweet personality “The old guitar! I plucked the strings, hummed Sweet Georgia Brown.
