The Symbolal Devices In Fences By August Wilson

Decent Essays

Have you ever built a "fence" to keep things in? How about to actually build a fence to keep things out? August Wilson's play "Fences" uses the name as both a metaphorical and physical reference. There are four of these metaphorical fences that are referred to as well as the physical hardwood fence that Troy is actually building.
One of these metaphorical fences that was shown throughout the play was the fence that Troy built between himself and his wife, family, and friends. Bono points out that Troy builds this fence between his wife because he is cheating on her. Troy pushes his wife farther and farther from him by cheating on her. Rose finds out that Troy had been cheating on her when Troy tells her that the other woman is pregnant. The other woman dies during childbirth forcing Rose and Troy to take care of the child. During the play he does not have the motivation to finish the physical fence that he is building, which is similar to the motivation he is to stay committed to his wife. Troy is unable to open himself and communicate his emotions and his own affection. This effects Rose because she is unaware that he is cheating the entire time, and she has to find out when he tells her he got Alberta pregnant. This leaves Rose in disappointment of her husband.
A second fence that in the play is the fence that Rose has that holds together her family. She adds more meaning to her character since she thinks that the fence is positive. This fence to Rose is a symbol of her love. She attempts to make Troy and Cory build the fence together, this is her way of trying to reestablish the bond between them. Rose thinks her family is falling apart and the fence is a symbolic way of attempting to keep the bond together. Troy doesn’t understand why she wants them to build the fence so badly. Troy’s friend Bono clears this up for him when Troy, Cory, and Bono exchange in conversation. Cory says, “I don’t see why Mama want a fence around the yard nowadays.” Troy says, “Damn if I know either. What she keeping out with it? She ain’t got nothing nobody want.” Bono explains why she wants the fence by saying, “Some people build fences to keep people out… and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on
