The Struggle In Richard Wright's Hunger

In Edelman’s piece Still Hungry in America, she is discussing poverty in America. The purpose of this piece is to convince readers to take action to support federal programs that could help end the problem of poverty. This piece is intended to communicate that poverty is a real problem and America and needs our help to put a stop to it. Edelman is trying to communicate to those who don’t know anything issue and those who want to know how to help solve this issue.

In the passage “The Library Card,” Richard Wright describes how he started to read when he living in the South as an African American and how the books changed his attitude towards the racism. Occasionally, Wright interested in an article which was a furious denunciation of Mencken, and he wanted to know more about Mencken to figure out why the whites hated him. In order to read the book, Wright decided to borrow it from the library, but unfortunately, he did not have the library card due to the segregation. Afterwards, he borrowed the card from Mr. Falk, and got the books. Once he read the book, he was shocked by the writing style and became fascinated with it. “Whenever my environment had failed to support or nourish me, I had clutched at books.” –Richard Wright, Black Boy. The author suffered and lived through an isolated society, where books were the only option for him to escape the reality of the world. Wright wrote this fictionalized book about his childhood and adulthood to portray the dark and cruel civilization and to illustrate the difficulties that blacks had, living in a world run by whites.

“Hunger” is an article published in 1989 by social justice activist Maggie Helwig. In this article Helwig discusses the stereotypes behind eating disorders, and gives real life examples of the impacts an eating disorder can have on someone. She is able to incorporate many ideas that smoothly flow together to capture the audience’s attention, while also making the audience consider their thoughts and views on eating disorders. She ends the article by giving insightful information as to what it was like for her to suffer from an eating disorder, and why she chose to starve herself for eight years. Helwig uniquely incorporates logos, pathos, and ethos in her writing to completely gain the audience’s attention and influence their opinions on eating disorders.

Douglass and Wright both experience similar reactions to their newly gained knowledge. After finding access to a library, Wright begins to read and learn more about different perspectives and the way others think. He eventually realizes, through his readings, that he is hurt by what he learns as is evident in quotation “But to feel that there were feelings denied me, that the very breath of life itself was beyond my reach, that more than anything hurt, wounded me,”

Wright scrawls, “[y]et I still wondered how it was possible to know people sufficiently to write about them? Could I ever learn about life and people?”(Wright par 74). This quote shows Wright’s deeper understanding. Most likely, this occurs because Wright begins to read more. As with all readers, books increased Wright’s intelligence and opened his eyes to the world thereby removing him from a state of ignorance. Fully understanding his world, Wright’s questions cease to exist at the end of his piece. This indicates that Wright can now understand the world around him.

Frederick Douglass, an African American slave, searches for liberation against the shackles of slavery through education; as told in Frederick Douglass’ Narrative in a Life of Frederick Douglass. Douglass portrays education as a paradox; knowledge brings him both great joy and great pain. Learning opens up new worlds for Douglass, and he becomes obsessed with the possibility of freedom. At the same time, he envies his fellow slaves for their ignorance. They do not understand what their enslavers have stolen from them. Douglass grapples with the hopelessness of his plight, but knowledge empowers him enough to set himself free from a life of benightedness, and to share that knowledge with others.

“Man of All Work” by Richard Wright takes place in the 1950’s in the rural south right before the events of the Civil Rights Movement that further shaped America for all races. We follow one man named Carl who takes his wife’s name and clothing for a day to interview for a domestic job meant for woman for the Fairchild family. This short story further displays the difficult race relations in the South during this time, as well as the lack of respect that the whites had for African Americans. Richard Wright and Malcolm X are two African Americans that struggled so much in the pursuit of knowledge in other to gain power and figure. Richard wright is from Natchez, Mississippi; he was in the south around the year 1925 and worked for the white men helping them get books from the library. During the process of obtaining books for the white men, he wants to read and know of the black history. Malcolm X is from Omaha, Nebraska, he was in prison for burglary, during his time in prison then came the passion for knowledge and he wants to build his vocabulary on how to speak, and write letters appropriately to Mr. Elijah Muhammad. Richard wright becomes motivated when he comes across an article that made mention of H. L. Mencken being a fool and wants to know the reason for such a saying, Richard wrights’ difficulties was how to get a library card without cut reading the novel of H. L. Mencken. Richard Wright becomes transformed greatly not only has his vocabulary improved but had known a great deal of black history. Malcolm X is motivated to read so he can write good letters to Mr. Elijah Muhammad. His difficulties was learning how to read, write and himself not having enough time to read because the lights had to go off and they were watched by a moving guard, he becomes transformed by studying the dictionary to improve his knowledge of vocabulary in reading, speaking and writing good letters to Mr. Elijah Muhammad.

In Frederick Douglass’s narrative, “Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass”, he speaks of how he gained his education. He discusses who helped him and who discouraged him from getting an education. He mainly taught himself how to read and write, but he would have been nothing without the help of one of his master’s wife, Mrs. Auld. This narrative has shown that even the slightest education can be very abundant and meaningful. Through this essay it becomes evident that education is only a privilege.

Gender inequality, “natural” gender roles, body image, and false romanticizations of food are enforced and portrayed through society’s commercials and advertisements. There are underlying and subliminal messages in many advertisements that create a hyperreal reality that influences people’s views and understanding of gender roles. In “Hunger As Ideology,” Susan Bordo discusses which advertisements portray a false reality and how it effects woman and men in society.

   In the troubled world in which we live in, it is almost impossible not to find someone who is experiencing hunger in any one of its forms. Whether it is for food, for knowledge, or for love, hunger is everywhere and it mercilessly attacks anyone, young or old, black or white. In Richard Wright's autobiography, Black Boy, Wright suffers hunger for love, hunger for knowledge, and hunger for what he believes is right.

"Whenever I thought of the essential bleakness of black life in America, I knew that Negroes had never been allowed to catch the full spirit of Western civilization, that they lived somehow in it but not of it. And when I brooded upon the cultural barrenness of black life, I wondered if clean, positive tenderness, love, honor, loyalty, and the capacity to remember were native with man. I am reading Hunger by Michael Grant, and I am on page 302. This book is about a town of kids with no adults. They are completely cut off from the outside world. They are slowly running out of food and they need to find a way for them not to starve. On top of that, some of the kids are getting powers and the “normals” are starting to dislike them.
