Zoo have many creative ways to protect animals. Zookeepers are supposed to protect the animals and the zoos. People visit zoos for entertainment but, the main focus is conservation efforts. The role of zoos is to protect animals by giving them living space and by giving the basic need and preventing them from extinction. Zeekeepers will do anything to keep the animals in zoos safe.

Zoo Atlanta opened the Ford African Rainforest, a brand-new home for the gorilla and the zoo’s other lowland gorillas. This shows that the Ford African Rainforest helped the gorillas survive. In the article, “Our Beautiful Macaws and Why They Need Enrichment” it talks about how the ACCR team thought of some creative ideas to give the Macaw Exhibit a fresh, new look. This shows that the zoo cares about the animals and wants them to live in a nice environment. To conclude, in all three stories it shows that zoos care about animals and want to help them survive.

These days more and more species of animals are going extinct. The zoo’s are trying to protect more animals by keeping them safe and helping their species repopulate. The death of a Cincinnati Zoo gorilla named Harambe, as a result of a young boy falling into its exhibit, has brought a major controversy on the roles of zoos in modern society. Some people consider zoos to be unethical, conversely, zoos can be both beneficial to humans as well as the animals. “Zoos are not Prisons, they Improve the Lives of Animals” and “The Case for the End of the Modern Zoo” are articles that explore this topic and provides insight for both parties of this debate. Zoos should continue to exist because they can bring endangered species of animals out of their extinction, provide valuable knowledge to humans, and zoo animals can live longer and healthier lives.

One of the most fun, visually amazing functions to visit are zoo's. Growing up as a kid going to the zoo was so much fun and basically guaranteed a great day out. People have been complaining and questioning the role of zoo's for a long time now. Some claim that it actually kills the animals off faster. Others claim that zoo's actually help protect and preserve the lives of these animals. Only one can make a reasonable argument by studying sources, and finding out statistics. To begin, Pi explains how zoo animals, contrary to popular belief, would not necessarily be happier if they were freed than if they remained in captivity. The common misconception is that the “animals in the wild are ‘happy’ because they are ‘free’”(15). However, Pi effectively explains why this is not the case. Even though a zoo limits an animal’s freedom, the animal is happier because it is protected from dangers that, in the wild, would be commonplace and supplied with necessities that would otherwise be much harder to come across.

The zoo teaches many things about all types of animals and provides information about the animal’s habitat and their niche. An animal that caught my attention was the chimpanzee (Africa). What I learned about the chimpanzees is that they are endangered because of habitat alteration. Based on some human’s actions and their eagerness to expand land, chimpanzees are going extinct. Through the years, chimpanzees develop their own skills for survival in their particular habitat, but when their habitat is destroyed, the chimpanzees have nowhere else to go. Americans have been questioning and debating whether these institutions are actually beneficial to the animals and if it’s really ethical to keep animals like Harambe in captivity. Not all zoos have the money to provide what wild animals need. Considering both the pros and cons of either sides of the issue, it is clear that zoos are detrimental to the animals for various reasons including unacceptable living environments, dangerous health concerns, as well as a huge ethical dilemma.
