The strengths and weaknesses of Skagit Valley College differ from which campus you attend. The particular strengths and disadvantages can range from: students able to retake their Compass Test, high school students can attend free, Skagit prepares students for four year colleges; but my campus does not have many classes, its first come/first serve, and it’s a small school that doesn’t have many programs. My campus has criminal justice classes, but not a criminal justice program. The class points you in the right direction but doesn’t help you in real life situations. There could be possible solutions for these weaknesses. Students or civilians take a Compass Test to see where they lie at. Basically the Compass test is used to …show more content…
As Skagit Valley College may be excellent, it also has its weaknesses such as the first come/first serve policy or statement. If a person is on the right lead to his/her career but is having trouble getting into a class required for a degree, that takes out proportions of his/her time waiting until the next chance. Sometimes students are frustrated and it affects their grades. Other times they want to or quit and wait until they can go somewhere else. It all depends on how a person is going to respond or react to a class they are seeking. Also the campus I attend to at Whidbey Island is very small. This doesn’t give students the full experience of how a regular college is like. Several Universities are huge and have several students attending their campus. Whidbey’s campus is like a tenth of a regular college. Skagit Valley College on Whidbey Island doesn’t have many classes. I wanted to take classes for medical tech, but I found none. This can affect students that prefer particular majors, as of course the campus doesn’t offer it. So this leaves them unexperienced when they go to a college that has their course available. The people that live on this island should convince the government that they should invest more money into Skagit Valley College Whidbey Island Campus. If we convince the government to support us, then we should have a vote for
Two colleges I would like to attend is High Point University and UNC Pembroke. I would like to attend High Point because it is near both Winston-Salem and Greensboro. UNC Pembroke is also a great option to attend to because I noticed that the campus is closed off which will help in staying focus but it’s not as close to the city. My academic interest is in natural science involving biology but also math. My social interests is doing activities in the city in order to have a separation from campus life.
Comparing Clark Atlanta University and Stilman college both HBCU’S they both carry great values and caring professors but Clark Atlanta students
San Jose City College’s 23% completion rate is not a good local investment. It’s true, investing in an educated populace contributes to the health and safety of the community and its economy; however, a generation of property tax revenue allocated to this college has not produced these particular results. San Jose City College students are taking much longer than normal to complete their two year program and the amount of students who complete their program is to insignificant to have any meaningful return. More students may complete their program within two years if they paid the cost of their own education.
Many students who may not have the best grades or have the top act score can find it hard to get into many of the schools they dreamt about going to but starting out at the community college level allows you to get your foot in the door with school , and allows you to become a stronger student. “That is the understanding- that you will grow a little bit with your first English Class, a bit more with your first psychology class, a whole lot more with your first biology class, physic, and chemistry.” While attending the local community college grow as a student and a learner so when the times come to transfer a stronger student is entering that
South Portland Community College (SPCC) is located in the primarily White state of Maine. Southern Maine is more racially diverse than the rest of Maine, but still has only a 15% non-White population. Of the over 6,000 students enrolled at SPCC, less than 20% identify as non-White, and just 6% are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Queer (LGBTQ+) identified. To address the diverse needs of these traditionally marginalized student populations on campus, over the last several decades SPCC administrators, faculty, and students created the Office of Multicultural Student Life (OMSL) and the Spectrum Center for Gender and Sexual Diversity (the Spectrum Center).
Students nowadays face many challenges when it comes to obtaining a college education. We evaluate an institution’s quality based on what we need the most. The qualities sought out may vary by each person’s personal point of view. However, as a student, I’ve found that most students seek for an institute that benefits them the most. Attending a community college has been an enormous advantage towards my education. I have been attending San Bernardino Valley College for the last two semesters. I have come to respect their philosophies and values. The institution has now been in business for 87 years. They venture to encourage both students and faculty towards high standards of achievement and progress into exceptional members of the society. They now offer a variety of degrees, transfer programs and certificates for a wide range of students. San Bernardino Valley College has an accomplished staff, student support services and technological tools that pave the road towards the conquest of a quality education.
I am reaching out to you as my second to last resort option. As I have tried to already reach out to other people in your office for help in this matter with no help or advice other then what I have already done and that’s was that. So if I am not able to resolve this matter with or get a better understanding with it I may just have to take it to the governor. I am completely lost and confused about the whole graduation requirements and how it’s such a blurry line for transfer students from one community college to another. There is no clear cut guidance and support with nobody in counseling or administration or registration on the same page on what the student needs to do in order to graduate so the student is left to fend for them self’s.
The college offers students a basic college education and also has one of the best nursing programs in the state. Since I'm a REaCH student the classes are free and costly effective. Which means I am able to receive a free education, free book rentals, and free tutoring. So I've saved hundreds or thousands of dollars, all I have to
If there is one thing I'm good at, it is shopping. I find the best deals, make the most out of every shopping trip and generally derive great pleasure from the process. Unfortunately, State College students are only given a very short time to shop for our courses and even less time to return our books to the bookstore for the classes we dropped. The more classes you attend and professors you meet, the more educated your final decision will be at the end of add/drop. If you miss the first day of a Tuesday/Thursday class, you will have to base your judgment of the class on a mere two lectures. I may be a good shopper, but when it comes to classes, no one is that good.
It’s August 28th, 2015 I had just moved to Grand Valley State University two days ago. Its 6:15am. My cell phone is ringing. It was my brother and I thought it was too early for him to be calling me, so I sent his call to voicemail, it rang again, I thought to myself, “Why on earth is he calling me at 6:15 in the morning it’s too early for this”, So I finally decided to answer the call and I got the news that my grandma passed away. It wasn’t totally unexpected, she was on hospice care an entire week before I left for college and I’ve watched her slowly deteriorate because of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia.
Alyssa Pracz, a journalist at Northern Star, makes the point that “[p]rofessors, however, tend to teach the material as if everyone taking the class is planning on majoring in the subject” when, in reality, students just see the class as another general education course. Additionally, students struggle in some of the subjects which have nothing to do with their particular majors. Pracz also states, “As a result, many students' grades suffer, sometimes to the point of lowering their grade point averages so much that they are unable to get into the major they planned on pursuing”. Ultimately, if a student has a huge passion and dream for his life, and cannot pass a certain general education course then his whole future is foiled. General education classes are redundant and do not aid the student whatsoever in cultivating skills required for his future job. Colleges and universities think general education courses are helping students when they actually are hurting them.
Community college is a great institution for students to start their educational journey. Especially when they do not have the funds or lack some of the prerequisite that a university would require. Community college was created to serve the community, traditional and non-traditional students with the best higher education and lifetime learning opportunities. The faculty and staff members at a community college is there to provide leadership in education while going above and beyond to recognize the needs of the students and the community by providing excellent educational programs and support services that are available to all who have the opportunity to take advantage of them. “Student services now include recruitment and retention, counseling, student activities, student health, financial aid, academic support, career centers, transfer centers, and supplemental services such as transportation, child care, and services tailored for specific populations of students” (Cohen, Brawer, & Krisker, 2014, pg. 209). My philosophy in fulfilling the role and mission of the community college, is to establish the mission, vision, goals and values to guide all students on their journey to strive to become successful both in school and in today’s economy.
Several opportunity costs are associated with taking classes at SCTC. While currently still in high school, some examples include missing social events, not conversing with peers, etc. I’ve had to decide whether or not to enjoy reading a novels or study for an important college class. Taking this class at SCTC will also prevent me or make it harder to participate in any type of employment or extra-curricular activities such as sports, clubs, etc. (Bade, 2015)
I could go to an ambitious college and have the joy of learning sucked out of me by the sheer competition. I firmly believe the best learning is a delicate balance between childlike-curiosity and adult dedication. UC has the choice
Everyone has or should have an ideal; something which he can look forward to, of which he may dream, and for which he may strive. In our colleges we come across many defects or limitations. We often discuss these among ourselves. And in course of these discussions, and as a result of them, we come to cherish a vague notion of what would be an ideal college, at last, what we would regard as an ideal. Here of course I speak mostly for myself.
