“Freedom Summer”, a book by Bruce Watson, talks about that historic time of 1964 in Mississippi. He explains in detail about the events that went on. Even the most painful details from that summer he has you relive as he tells about them. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee went to Mississippi to educate African Americans and help them vote. Watson talks about the murder of three innocent people while down there in Mississippi. Three people that were young and just helping African Americans be educated were murdered for helping. The initial impression one makes on his or her classmates during Plebe Summer often carries with them throughout their time at the Academy. In many ways, it is unfortunate because people are not given a second chance to prove their worth, but in other cases, flaws in character and work ethic are observed and they are accurate from the first impression.

Have you ever been betrayed by someone that you trusted? “The Summer People”, a fairy tale short story written by the author Kelly Link, portrayed the characters in a way that be can be greatly related. Throughout the story, she used several literary elements, such as symbols, allusions, and dictions to help the readers to understand the moral of the story. The main character, Fran, was bonded with the faith to be the caretaker of the summer people, and there is no possible way that she can escape from them. Despite the kindness of her friend, Ophelia, Fran decided to use her to gain freedom from the summer people. Ophelia has always been truthful to Fran, even though Fran bullies her during the beginning of the story. At the end, Ophelia was betrayed by Fran and forced to take over her responsibilities of the summer people. In an e-mail interview conducted by Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts with Kelly Link by the editor, Brian Attebery, explained the style of her writing. Link stated, “The primary goals of fiction — whether it’s fantasy or realism or whatever — are to entertain, to raise or answer question, to unsettle or to comfort, to communicate. The tool set changes. The goal varies too, and that’s independent of genre” (qtd. In Attebery 414). The statement from Link gives the readers that why she decided to write stories like The Summer People, which can be greatly related to realism, because it’s important to understand thing aren’t always going to turn

The story of Summer, by David Updike, is set during that idyllic time in life when responsibility is the last word on anyone's mind. And yet, as with all human affairs, responsibility is an ever-present and ever-necessary aspect to life. What happens when the protagonist, Homer, loses his awareness of a certain personal responsibility to maintain self-control? Homer's actions increasingly make him act foolishly, internally and externally. Also, how does Homer return to a sense of sanity and responsibility? To a degree, I would say that he does.

There are many things we can identify in our favorite novels. In my book The Hidden Summer, there are themes, the author's purpose, and conflict. The protagonist in this novel is Nell. The setting takes place in an abandoned mini golf course. The story begins with a conflict, which is, Nell and her best friend Lydia are not allowed to see each other because their moms told them that they are forbidden to do so. They aren't too happy about this news but as best friends, they'll find a way to meet each other no matter the obstacles.

“Simple recipes” by Madeleine Thien, and “The Closing Down of Summer” by Allister MacLeod both focus on the struggles the characters undergo due to cultural gaps, or being away from home from work, creating the sense of isolation or alienation within their families. The impression of isolation found in the text is generated from the situational behaviours found in the actions, thoughts, or exchange of language in the characters. For Macleod focuses on how his protagonist uses ancestral rituals to find individual fulfillment on the account of his work occupation deteriorating his connection with family. Two components that have an immense impact on the quality and caliber of a film are the editing and sound found within the film. These two aspects alone can make or break a film. In the film The Kings of Summer, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, these two elements collaborate to highlight certain emotions and key moments in the film’s plot. Some of the sub-elements of these two components that can easily be identified within the film include the flashforward, the flashback, both nondiegetic and diegetic sound, semi diegetic sound, graphic matching and voice offs. Within the film The Kings Of Summer, editing and sound are methodically and tactfully utilized in order to produce a film that is both entertaining and meaningful for the audience.

Character traits in books are a very essential element and without them, books would not be books. They provide people with an example that they may follow in order to live a good life. Some books serve as life lessons to show people how some characteristics can bring downfall to some people if they do not follow the rules. Throughout Last Days of Summer, by Steve Kluger, the characters possess many characteristics that can help us in our everyday life, most importantly, patience.

In life, people seem to judge each other based on not only their looks but what they have. Specifically, when people have things we don’t. Ray Bradbury shows this theme in his short story “All Summer in a Day.” Additionally, the song “All Bad” by Justin Bieber comprises a similar them. Both of these stories reveal a universal theme about not judging people based on what they have that you don’t. In both “All Summer in a Day” and “All Bad” we learn that jealousy can affect the way people act and it can make them cruel. However, although these stories are very similar, the way the themes are portrayed draw out differences.

Summer is the time to really rid yourself of your past and really think about the now, I know that might seem extremely melodramatic, and it is, but it's also quite true. As a human being I know I'm not the only one who experiences a certain nagging emotion: to want. May it be jewellery, clothes, technology, we can all agree it's hard to satisfy these wants. I have found that one of the most sustainable ways is to try your hand at selling your old items to earn money and buy new items. The story “All Summer in a Day” is an example of a conflict. It is about a civilization on Venus and how it rains for seven years then the sun comes out for two hours then it rains again. There is a classroom in Venus that waits for the sun to come. One girl, Margot, lived in Ohio before coming to Venus so she was used to seeing the sun every day. No one believes her when she describes the sun.

The setting of both stories are such a stark contrast to each other that it almost seems like two different worlds all together. The story, “Sixteen,” is set during the winter time when the snow falls freely and everything is just coated in white. Whereas, with “Through the Tunnel” it takes place during summer where the sun is shining and the days are long and warm. One of the biggest contrasts between winter and summer is life versus death. Although both times can be very different they can also be quite alike.

I chose to look at the poem by Anne Sexton, Y​ ou​ ng. I believe this poem epitomizes the concept of an American summer. Anne writes about her summer and what she remembers. Her lines, “I lay on the lawn at night, clover wrinkling over me,”, remind me greatly of my experiences during the summer. An American summer is often characterized as warm, happy, and full of life. A field of clover emulates the idea of happiness. Summer nights are also thought of as warm, and some consider them happy as well. Sexton’s line, “as the crickets ticked together”, reminds me of summer because where I come from, crickets chirp all night long. “And I...told the stars my questions,” is relevant to the idea of America because with hard times, many look to the stars

My favorite season of the year is summer because of the warm weather, the school vacation, and the endless fun. I really enjoy the warm weather because it’s the perfect atmosphere to do outdoor activities. My favorite part about summer has to be the fact that school is closed for two months. During summer, you’re free to do whatever you want, not worrying about curfew or waking up early for school. Summer time is a great time to relax with friends and family by soaking up the sun at a beach or simply having dinner together.
