The three stories by Kate Chopin describe three married couples in their unexpected situations. The primary characters in each of her three stories were women. Women did not have positions of prominence in the family situations. They all seem to enjoy a rather normal existence until fate introduces an unexpected event in each of their lives. The three stories being compared based on the female characters and their marriages are “The Story of an Hour”, “The Storm”, & “Desiree’s Baby”.
In “The Story of an Hour”, Louise Mallard was an independent lady who had a weakened heart. Her marriage with Bentley Mallard had evolved into a more practical situation rather than romance. Even though they never had children, all of her needs were taken care of. Bentley was very controlling towards Louise of what she could and couldn’t do; therefore, her emotions were suppressed. After she received word of Bentley’s unexpected “death”, she came to realize that she would begin to experience freedoms she had only dreamed of before. Her marriage to Bobinot seemed strong with the love for him and her four-year-old son, Bibi. While Bobinot and Bibi were unable to come home due to an unexpected storm in town, another storm erupted in Calixta’s life when the same storm forced Alcee, a former lover, to take refuge in her house. Chopin has the storm as an irony for Calixta and Alcee to reunite as if it was their romantic history they had in the past. It was the one storm that could create another storm. After Bobinot and Bibi arrived back at the house, they found Calixta in an unusually happy mood. She didn’t appear to feel guilty for her recent interlude in Bobinot’s absences nor did she intend to hurt Bobinot. The only guilt she truly had was her infidelity of not being able to share it with
