The Six- Steps SOLVES Family–School Meeting are: Step 1- Setting up the meeting and inviting the students and family This involves what I would call housekeeping where it is decided who to invite, where the meeting will take place, what one issue would you like to address (what are your goals – objectives) to improve academically and socially remembering that this is your perspective. Be aware that you must be open to changes that may come about from new or another perspective that may come up in the meeting. The meeting should be conducted without a table with the participants sitting in a circle. Be sure to have materials needed available and/or copies of work completed. Step 2- Orienting to purpose and process and introducing participants Who do you invite? According to Amatea, the student is an integral part of the process (2013, pg. 292), therefore, must be present in order to be part of the solution. The next persons are either parents, if possible, or the primary guardians. If one parent or caregiver cannot attend the meeting, then the plan should be sent home for a private discussion among all parties. If primary parent or caregiver refuses – respect their wishes. Finally, other school staff or teachers can be involved but inform the parent and they should only be present to assist in problem solving and/or to provide support for the family.
