During the early developments of America, multiple states instituted the practice of owning African-Americans and using them as slaves. Surprisingly, this form of slavery was not only present in the Southern states, but also in the Northern too. Plantation owners from all over found their use in owning slaves, and were even shown taking advantage of the practice. By having ownership of slaves, it often contributed in farming production on plantations and also became useful when it came to voting. Unfortunately, though, the practice was abused by many plantation owners. When looking back at the many accounts written at the time, there seems to be a pattern of how the slaves were treated. Furthermore, the accounts additionally revealed problems that not only existed in the south, but also in the north too. Therefore, by using an account of a traveler visiting America and a plantation owner who owned slaves, it’s able to understood on how the slaves were actually treated within society. These two sources not only reveal a problem amongst the owners, but also reveal a side of the North that many did not know. The autobiographies of Olaudah Equiano, a British slave, and Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs, American slaves, highlight the transition from the institution of British slavery pre-American Revolution to the 18th and 19th century American plantation slavery. The explicit differences between the two systems suggest unique factors that either promoted or hindered each institution. In Britain, slavery was generally driven by economic factors that relied on trained labor. Growth and expansion of slavery in the United States, however, was deeply rooted in consistent oppression and exploitation of slaves through physical and psychological abuses, which in turn gave slave owners unchecked power that ensured the perpetuation of plantation slavery.

There has been many historians and theorists who have tackled colonial slavery. One of them is Ira Berlin whose book Many Thousands Gone is his take on slavery diversity in American history and how slavery is at the epicenter of economic production, amongst other things. He separates the book into three generations: charter, plantation and revolutionary, across four geographic areas: Chesapeake, New England, the Lower country and the lower Mississippi valley. In this paper, I will discuss the differences between the charter and plantation generations, the changes in work and living conditions, resistance, free blacks and changes in manumission.
Slavery was a central institution in American society during the late eighteenth century, and was accepted as normal and applauded as a positive thing by many white Americans. In the 1770’s, there were approximately 400,000 blacks in the Southern colonies and 50,000 in the Northern colonies. Slaves were central to the operation of the colonies, especially in the South where they were a crucial element of the labour force. They were treated as inferiors, but living alongside whites, and essential as an exploited labouring class. On one hand, people were advocating liberty from slavery, while at the same time relying on slaves to drive the economy.
It is well known in today’s American society that slavery is horrific. However, throughout the 1800s, slavery was a common practice in the South. Slave owners sought great profit in the free labor of slaves and saw no harm in slavery. It is well known that slavery was substandard for the slaves, but slaves such as Frederick Douglass viewed it as also unfavorable for the slaveholders. Throughout Douglass’s book, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Douglass tells of his experiences as a slave and provides numerous examples of how slavery is substandard for slaveholders.
Through the common slave narrative motif of exposing physical and emotional abuse of slaves, Douglass showcases the exploitation and dehumanization of slaves by their masters, arousing readers’ sympathy and strengthening the humanitarian cause behind abolitionism. Douglass describes how the slaves received a scanty allowance of inadequate clothes and bedding each year, wiring that “When these failed them, [slaves] went naked until the next allowance-day” --a fact illustrated by the description that “children...almost naked, might be seen at all seasons of the year” (48). When Americans think of slavery, they often think of African Americans being enslaved by whites; however, Native Americans often owned African American slaves. Some Native American tribes treated African Americans like they were a part of their family and some treated African Americans harsh like white masters often did. This paper explains the treatment of African American slaves by Native Americans. Next, the social status of Native Americans who owned black slaves will be discussed to give knowledgeable information as to if those Native Americans were a part of the same social class as their European peers. This paper will also discuss the general conditions, similarities, and differences of enslaved by whites or Native Americans.
In American history, every event and person plays a part in the future. For example, rich plantation owners helped America advance their economy. However, that would not have been at all possible without the help of their slaves. The time and institution of slavery is a time of historical remembrance. It played a primary role during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. The treatment, labor conditions, and personal stories of these slaves’ treatment and labor conditions are all widely discussed around the world to this day.
In the book titled The Slave Community: Plantation Life in the Antebellum South, author John Blassingame’s theme, focused on the history of African slave experience throughout the American South. After much research, the author said in the preface that most historians focused more on the planter instead of the slave. He also pointed out that most of the research on slaves by previous historians was based on stereotypes, and do not tell the real history of slave life and a slave’s inner self. Most of these historians, who focused on antebellum southern history, left out the African-American slave experience on purpose. Through much gathering of research, Blassingame hoped to correct this injustice to the history of African-American slaves, and show how slavery affected slaves, but also American life, culture, and thought.
